Yi City: Where Everything Really Does Happen So Much
IF LIVING CAN BE THIS by lise/veliseraptor
“You make me very happy,” Xiao Xingchen said, like it was just that easy. Xue Yang felt like someone had just cut off his tongue and shoved it down his throat.
“Yeah?” he said stupidly, and then glanced over at a-Qing, suddenly self-conscious. She had a funny look on her face, a cross between disgruntled and pleased.
“Yes,” Xiao Xingchen said firmly. “It has been…an unexpected gift. You too, a-Qing,” he added. “The both of you. That you chose to make a home with me - that you have accepted Zichen as well…”
Xue Yang’s stomach did something funny, twisting around like an eel. “Who said I’ve accepted anything,” he said. “Maybe I’m just biding my time until I can get rid of him without you getting suspicious.”
Xiao Xingchen didn’t even hesitate before he laughed, turning that painful smile directly on him. “Oh, a-Mei,” he said fondly.
your eyes they are bound | The Untamed
Summary:
Something’s gone wrong, Chengmei has disappeared, and Xiao Xingchen is trying not to panic.
(An alternate POV/missing scene from if living can be this.)
Notes:
I’m pretty sure this fic exists exclusively because @orodrethsgeek read a rough draft of if living could be this and went “but Lise, I want to see what happened in this bit between Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen” and I was like “oh well since you said so, allow me to indulge my inability to leave my own works alone and my eternal desire to poke around in what’s going on in everyone’s heads in a given canon.”
So - huge thanks to Misha, and also to @ameliarating for editing, and everyone who has read and kudosed and left comments on the original fic. I am grateful.

The Untamed ☆ Special Edition Ep 16
Since I brought up the unreliability of Empathy in the last post, I wanted to talk a little bit about how I view Empathy in MDZS vs Empathy in The Untamed.
In my opinion, the actual events we see happening in MDZS!Empathy are overall more reliable than those we see in The Untamed, because we have WWX’s commentary to remind the reader that we do not have the full context of what is occurring, and that various aspects of what we see can be read in more than one way. Because of WWX’s commentary, his trying to puzzle things out, his recognition of not being omniscient, and his reminders that he is inhabiting NMJ’s vision and feeling his rage, the reader is aware that what we see is limited in scope, and all we can do is try and make educated guesses, like WWX, but that what we’re seeing is not a universal, objective truth.
Empathy in The Untamed, however, operates very differently. It’s a different medium after all, so the viewer can only watch for themselves and WWX’s commentary is absent. Due to the presentation, the sequence seems to function as a reveal, seeming to indicate that it’s the truth of what really happened. When you look a little more closely, though, there are moments from Empathy that do not align with previous events we’ve seen in the main body of the narrative. Sometimes this means omitting things we’ve already seen (MY throwing himself in front of the sword meant for NMJ, LXC explaining to NMJ about MY’s spywork), but other times it means either presenting things NMJ could not have possibly seen (MY’s run-in with the captain), or showing a version of events irreconcilable with what we’ve already seen (NMJ’s discovery of MY stabbing the captain in Episode 10 vs in Empathy).
Due to the editing of the Empathy sequence in The Untamed, I think the viewer is invited to remember, as WWX does in the novel, that what we’re seeing we’re seeing from NMJ’s perspective, and that his perspective is a limited one, and beyond that, especially in what is omitted and what is added (the suspicious head turn during the brotherhood ceremony, for example), one affected by bias, and one that does not necessarily reflect the full truth about who JGY is.
the backyard is full of bones | The Untamed
Summary:
Xiao Xingchen identifies the wounded stranger he finds from the beginning. Hesitant to kill a prisoner out of hand himself, he makes a deal with Xue Yang to preserve his conscience. Xue Yang senses an opportunity. Neither of them see what’s coming.
A lot can happen in the turn of a season.
Notes:
hey yeah it’s my fic for @mxtxbb that I’ve been talking about all year
yeah so you start with a basic premise and then eight months later you have over 100k of fic that’s mostly relationship development and characters talking to each other while catastrophically failing to process their own emotions. anyway I’m still a sucker for yi city arc fix-its, apologies to Song Lan who is sir not appearing in this fic, and huge, huge thanks to my artists @rakiah and Vic (@vic_draws_betah on Twitter) and my beta @ameliarating.
(seriously though, ignore my weak graphic up there, the art here is incredible.)
When it comes to canon: I’m working from novel timeline as far as order of events and events themselves go, but largely with CQL character designs and adjustment upward in age.
Without further ado, since this fic is long enough without the notes making it even longer.
