Peru History

 We got in touch with his traveling companion Peru fan Sam Benson, one of the authors of Lonely Planet Peru, to get some stories about life as a writer, guide and fill us with some must-see highlights of a holiday in Peru. Lafler: Can you describe one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences he had while in Peru to research the book? Sam Benson: To me, the long bus rides from the Andes down into the jungle (or forest), which are the most memorable. In one of my early research trips to Peru, which came at the beginning of the rainy season. From the Andean highlands city of Cuzco, rickety buses literally crawl along the steep slopes and revel over waterfalls and flooded nearly passed out as I held my breath, crossing our fingers that we reach our next destination . The buses always seemed to be overloaded with all sorts of brightly colored goods, tropical fruit to sweaters, hats and gloves knitted by hand out of llama wool. I traveled through several seasons in just a bus ride, starting in winter-like conditions in the Andes and ends in sweltering summer weather, as in the Amazon. Lafler: Peru is full of some well-known attractions, but what are your favorite destinations unusual-track? SB: For Lonely Planet, I covered the popular "Gringo Trail" route, from Lima and traveling along the coast south, then east through Arequipa to Puno and Lake Titicaca, then north to Cuzco and ultimately, Machu Picchu. But even in this well beaten track, visit rural villages and very picturesque natural areas. In the very busy Sacred Valley, which had places like the Inca terraces of Moray virtually all to myself. On the south coast, I remember pisco and wine tasting for myself in the valley of Lunahuaná, a starting point for wild whitewater rafting. Out of Chincha, gave me a ghost tour that included the creepy catacombs of a former African slave plantation, Hacienda San Jose. Busy mysterious Nazca lines in the desert are a must along the Gringo Trail, but there are also dozens of ruins most remote and least visited, from the ancient cultures of Peru that few tourists see, such as Cerro Baul, a factory real beer built by the Wari people, or Cutimbo funerary towers in the region of Lake Titicaca, which is dotted with isolated islands, where residents offer traditional family homes for adventurous tourists. Lafler: You have spent enough time in Peru, researching and writing the guide. But how to advise a traveler with only two weeks to spend your time? SB: If I had only 2 weeks to spend in Peru, and assuming it was the first time they visit the country, I would start by making the semi-loop from Lima to Cuzco, taking the time to visit the villages around the Sacred Valley and take a trip by train to Machu Picchu or trekking the famous Inca Trail to visit the country's most famous ruins. So, I would have to choose between visiting a country house and wildlife make a river trip on the Amazon River basin, or the flight back to Lima and north of Huaraz, a mountain adventure base camp, then pressing the hidden beaches and archaeological sites further up the coast north to Ecuador. Lafler: Finally, are there any advice you can offer that are not in the book? SB: When I write the Lonely Planet guides, I put my heart and soul into it. Rarely have anything for the readers. After all, are the best reason I do what I do for a living! All of my insider tips are already in the book. Although my best advice is that readers tend to ignore. Travelers with an independent spirit and more time on their hands, not just your typical two weeks should look into alternative treks to Machu Picchu. By that I mean not only alternative routes to the busy Inca Trail, but hiking the visit of less impact, the most pristine Andean peaks - after all, that is what adventure is all about.
