I Wish I Hated You
Guys this one hurt me, so please read the CWs before proceeding. Pairing: Emily Prentiss x F!Reader Summary: You didn't leave because you stopped loving her. You left when she stopped letting you in. When a quiet pickup turns into a long-overdue confrontation, months of resentment, fear, and love collide, forcing you both to decide if it's worth picking up the broken pieces. Rating: M WC: ~3.9K CW: Angst, Miscommunication, Adult Language, Separation/Divorce, Relationship Conflict, Smut, Crying, Emotional Neglect, Reconciliation, Parenting Themes
You sit in your car for twenty minutes before you finally decide to knock.
You’re early, forty-five minutes early, but traffic was practically non-existent and any excuse to see her again, even if it’s just to pick up your daughter, is simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying.
You knock despite the key hanging next to the one from your house. She gave it to you for emergencies, or for when she inevitably forgot something at drop-off. You don’t think you’ll ever feel comfortable enough to use it, not when the house isn’t the one you built together.
You hear her curse from the other side of the door, and a small smile spreads across your lips without your permission. You know her well enough to know that she was either absorbed in a case file or some book she’s been carrying around for months.
You shake your head, because you’re not supposed to think of her like that… not now. You don’t have any right to.
The door opening pulls you out of your own thoughts, and you freeze, wholly unprepared.
She’s not ready for you, hair still damp and curling around her shoulders, skin flushed from the shower. She’s in a worn red tank top, and those damned gray sweatpants you tried to steal when she moved out.
But more than that, she looks tired. You can see the exhaustion in her face, her eyes filled with the weariness she only ever lets herself feel when she’s alone.
She blinks when she sees you, and your heart skips a beat like the traitorous bastard it is, because for a split second, you wished you weren’t just a visitor here.
“Hey.”
“Hi. I know I’m early, but traffic was surprisingly good for a Friday night.”
She steps back to let you in, her expression twisting as you slip past her. Her apartment hasn’t changed since the last time you were here, Delilah’s toys still crowding the living room, the baby monitor humming softly from her living room table, while the faint scent of pizza wafts from her kitchen. The walls are still bare, the furniture sparse, and the quiet ache in your chest makes itself known. Your heart cracks as you realize you were the one who built softness into the life you shared, the one who made her house into a home.
“It’s okay,” she mutters, shutting the door behind you. “She’s still asleep though.”
“I figured, she go down okay?”
“Eventually. Although you could’ve warned me about the raccoon obsession.”
A bark of laughter slips from your chest, and you don’t even try to hide the grin.
“I would’ve but I thought I had it under control.”
“You were wrong.” She looks at you now, face a little lighter, a small smile forming despite the raised eyebrow.
“Look, let’s blame Spence, he’s the one who bought her that stuffed raccoon for her birthday.”
“Of course he did.”
“I think we can blame the manifesto on Penelope though.”
“There’s a manifesto?”
“Oh yeah,” you say, dropping your keys onto the counter. “Apparently raccoons use buttons for money, and survive on ice cream and cookies.”
“That explains why she tried to get me to feed her ice cream for dinner.”
“Honey, she’s three, she’d do that anyway.”
“I expected the ice cream,” Emily huffs out a laugh, running a hand through her hair. “What I didn’t expect was hearing her try to say ‘nutritionally important’.”
“Jesus, I think she’s been spending too much time with Reid.”
“I mean, at least she’s not calling one of us baby girl?”
You laugh then, a gentle snort escaping you despite yourself. “Lord help us if she does– I’ll fight Derek.”
“Oh he’s her favorite, she’d root for him” She shrugs, reaching for a glass.
You can feel the smile fade as she turns, the ache blooming in your chest when you realize this is the Emily you fell in love with. The easy banter flows between you with a practiced ease, and not for the first time, you let yourself imagine what life would look like if she hadn’t disappeared. If things were still the way they were when she was yours.
You don’t realize you’ve gone quiet until she turns toward you, glass in hand.
“Water?"
“Please. I don’t think I’ve looked at anything that wasn’t caffeinated today.”
“Long shift?”
“A kid tried to bite me in triage within the first hour.”
“Jesus,” Emily mutters. “Remind me again why you chose the ER and not peds?”
“I thrive on chaos.” You smirk, taking a drink from the glass she handed you.
“I know.” Her voice is quiet now, and she has that look in her eye– the one that means she’s thinking too hard again.
“You okay?”
“What?”
“You just… look off. Work okay?”
“Like you care,” she says, and immediately looks like she regrets it.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“The job’s why you left, isn’t it?” She presses. “The long hours, the time apart– fuck, I can’t blame you for wanting out.”
“For fucks sake, Emily. It wasn’t your job.”
“Wasn’t it?”
“Emily…” you swallow and it feels like you’re swallowing glass. “We literally met because you were being evaluated for a GSW.”
You watch as she goes still.
“I knew exactly who you were,” you continue, voice rising despite yourself. “I knew what your life looked like. I could live with the late nights, with you being haunted by the cases, the danger that came with all that. I married you despite that. Fuck, Emily, I had a kid with you, knowing all of that.”
Her mouth opens like she’s going to interrupt but you don’t give her the chance.
“I was all in, Em. I saw it all and jumped in headfirst for you.” Your eyes are burning now, the tears threatening to spill down your face.
“Then why did you leave?”
“Because you stopped letting me in.”
“No I didn’t-”
“Yes, you did,” you snap, the words spilling out of you. “And you know what’s fucked up? I wish you would’ve cheated. If you’d fallen for someone else, it would’ve been easier. It would’ve made more sense if you’d fucked someone else. I’d at least have an explanation. I’d know it wasn’t my fault.”
Emily recoils like you hit her, stepping back, but you can’t stop, not when these words have been sitting in your chest for months.
“Instead, you just shut me out and I don’t even know why,” you continue, voice breaking despite yourself. “It’s like I woke up one day and we were just roommates who shared a bed. You became a stranger, Emily. I couldn’t recognize you anymore. You stopped laughing. You stopped touching me… I can’t even remember the last time you really looked at me.”
She’s breathing unevenly now, chest rising and falling in sharp, rapid movements like she’s fighting for air.
“And what makes it worse,” you add, vision blurring despite yourself, “you never stopped trying for her. You’d come home exhausted, barely standing, wrecked by a case, but you still showed up for her. Every time, Emily, you made sure she knew she was loved. You made sure she never doubted you.”
You look away then, the tears finally breaking free, spilling down your cheeks in hot, angry streams.
“I’m so grateful you’re here for Lila. She needs you. I just wish you would’ve told me.”
“Told you what?” she asks.
“That you didn’t want me anymore,” your voice cracks. “I could’ve handled it, Em. It would’ve been easier than this.”
And like that, all of the fight drains out of you.
Emily flinches back, like the words landed with a physical blow.
You watch as her mouth opens, then closes again, jaw working like there’s something she won’t let herself say, trapped behind her teeth.
You sit there, the tension so thick you could cut it with a knife, waiting for her to say something… anything.
“You’re insane.”
The words are rough, tinged with an anger you’ve never heard from her before.
“Excuse me.”
She meets your gaze then, and her eyes are full of rage, shame, and something you can’t quite name.
“You’re fucking insane if you think I didn’t want you.”
“Then why the fuck did you pull away?” You match her anger, voice like razor-wire.
But there’s nothing. She just stares at you, tight-lipped and silent, full of the anger that only comes when someone’s terrified, once again, swallowing the words she wants to say.
“Of course,” you scoff, turning away to grab your jacket. “You don’t get to do this. You don’t get to shut down again.”
“I was scared.”
The words are so soft you think you imagined them, and you freeze.
“...Say that again.”
“I was scared,” she says, louder now. “I was fucking terrified.”
You turn slowly, but she’s not looking at you, she’s staring at her own hands like she doesn't even recognize herself anymore.
“What were you so afraid of, Emily?”
She flinches like your words strike bone. Her jaw is clenched, and for a second you think she might try to avoid the question again.
“I was afraid I wasn’t strong enough for you.”
“You loved me so much… I know you did, and I love you too. But there were days I came home and couldn’t even stand myself. Days I’d look in the mirror and see someone else looking back. And I thought…”
She lets out a bitter, humorless laugh.
“I thought if I let you see that version of me you’d finally realize I wasn’t enough. So I pulled back without realizing. I guess I thought if I gave you the version of me you deserve, I could keep you.”
Her eyes find yours now, and it nearly undoes you.
“I’m sorry. I just wanted to keep you and all it did was push you away.”
You don’t answer right away. You just sit there, staring at her, before your feet make the decision for you and you move closer to her. Step by step, until there’s hardly any space left between you. Her breath catches, but she doesn’t move.
You reach for her hand, and she stiffens, pulling back like she’s not sure she deserves to be touched.
“Hey,” you say, and your words are quiet but firm. “Look at me.”
It takes a second, but finally she meets your gaze again. This time when you reach for her hand, she lets you. You hold it gently, guiding it to your chest, flattening her palm over your heart.
“I’m right here,” you whisper. “I didn’t expect you to be perfect. I didn’t need you to be the version you thought I deserved. I just needed you… Emily, I just needed you to see me.”
Her fingers twitch against your chest, and it’s like she’s grounding herself within your heartbeat.
You don’t say anything else. You don’t need to, not when it's her.
You don’t notice the space closing until your mouths meet. One second you were staring into each other's eyes like some cliche, and the next the remaining space between you had disappeared. Your mouths meet in a kiss that's desperate and terrified all of once. You kiss like you’re walking out onto a frozen lake, terrified the ice will crack beneath you.
Her mouth is warm and familiar against yours, despite the trembling, and you breathe her in like she’s the first inhale after being underwater.
She pulls back, just enough to speak, your foreheads pressed together, breaths mingling in the space between.
“I see you.”
She whispers it like a promise, and your heart cracks a bit as you kiss her again, because you believe her.
Your mouths crash into each other, and they’re not soft this time. It’s messy, breathless, and the realest thing you’ve felt in six months. You don’t pull away, you couldn't even if you tried. It’s more than a kiss. It’s the months of silence, nights spent in separate beds, the ache of sleeping next to someone who felt miles away.
You kiss like you’re saying “I love you”, and for a moment you let yourself feel that hope again because you missed this. You missed her.
You don’t even realize you’d moved your hands until you’re pushing her tank top up, desperate to feel her under your fingers.
“I’m sorry.”
She whispers it into your mouth, and you pull back to tug the shirt over her head.
“I know.”
Your fingers skim the skin of her ribs, and your breath catches, because even now she takes your breath away. You let your hands trail over her, memorizing the shape of her again.
Her hands hover over your hips, as if she’s afraid to touch you, and you see the fear filling her eyes.
You lift a hand, fingers lifting her chin to make her look at you before you catch her lips again. Her lips part against yours, but she stays there, still holding herself just out of reach, as if the second she lets herself feel you, you’ll float away.
You press yourself into her, and then you’re chest to chest, hip to hip, and you’re hoping she can feel everything you can’t say yet. You kiss her like you’re trying to breathe life back into her, and finally, she melts into you.
Her hands settle at your waist, and you take a deep breath that’s not about the kiss. She’s soft, her touch slow and reverent, sliding across the fabric of your t-shirt as if it’s a barrier she can't stand. You nod against her mouth and feel her hands slip under it, and finally you’re touching again.
You pull away, gasping against her.
“Take it off.” Your breath comes out in uneven pants, heart racing, but you’ve never been more sure of anything.
“Are you sure?”
“Wanna feel you.”
Your voice is shaky, cracking in your throat, but there’s no hesitation.
Emily looks up to meet your eyes again, her gaze searching your face, trying to find one hint of doubt, regret, or anything else that might tell her you don’t want this.
You don’t look away, you just let your hands trail down her back, playing with the waistband of those infuriating sweatpants, and you can see the moment she decides.
Her hands slide back down to curl around the hem of your shirt, and she lifts it slowly, pulling it and your bra over your head in one long motion.
She drops it to the floor and suddenly the only thing between you is air.
She exhales like she’s been punched in the chest before her hands wrap around you, pulling you back in, and it’s like she’s trying to relearn the shape of you.
“You’re so beautiful.”
The words land in your chest like a stone dropped in water, and you can feel them sink somewhere deep inside you, a place you forgot existed. And now it’s your turn to look at her.
Really look at her.
Her eyes aren’t hungry, or full of lust. They’re just…open. Wide and vulnerable, and so full of love it makes your throat close. She looks like she did when you first met, and it’s like you’re seeing each other for the first time again.
You can feel it there. The memories… the ghost of her hands the first time she touched you. The way she laughed when you told her you didn’t believe in soulmates, and the way she kissed you like she didn’t care.
You feel everything in one impossible moment, and it’s too much, so you kiss her again.
You kiss her like she’s the only thing keeping you standing, and your hands shove at her sweatpants, because she’s not close enough. You’re standing there, chest to chest, hearts thudding between you, but there's still too much between you. Too much space. Too much fabric. Too much time.
Her breath stutters as you press closer, the kiss tipping past control and falling deeper, into a tangled web of mouths and memory, threaded with urgency. You tug her sweatpants down her hips, pushing them to the floor in one smooth motion. She lets you, hands on your shoulders, grounding herself as she steps out of them, bare save for her underwear.
The sound she makes is small, almost broken against your lips and your heart skips a beat, because you’ve missed it, and you weren’t sure you’d ever get to hear it again.
Then her hands are at your waistband, and it’s her turn to push at your scrubs, and you breathe her name.
“Emily…”
You feel her still, hands stopping just below your hips.
“Are you sure?”
You start to nod, but you’re overwhelmed by everything, and she begins to pull away, and it’s like something inside you shatters all over again.
“Please,” you whisper, the words leaving your throat in a cracked, desperate sound. “Please.”
That’s all it takes before she sinks to her knees, taking your pants with her. You look down at her, eyes shining as she presses one gentle kiss to your hip before she stands back up, wrapping her arms around you and breathing in the scent of you.
Your cheek brushes her collarbone, and for a moment you just sit there, skin to skin, learning how to hold each other again.
“I missed you,” she whispers into your hair.
The words settle deep inside you, and you can feel a crack begin to repair as you kiss her again. It’s messy and aching, and the kiss tastes like the silence, like all the nights you spent apart, praying she’d follow you.
She threads her fingers through your hair and you gasp into her mouth. Your hands slide without thinking, pulling her closer, even as she moves toward the couch.
You fall onto it together, and the kiss breaks with a breathless laugh. She pulls you into her lap, but there’s no fight left in you as you settle onto her lap, thighs bracketing hers, arms looped around her neck.
You cry out softly when her hand slips between your thighs, and your whole body arches as her name slips from your lips like confession.
Your face finds her shoulder as her hand moves. She’s slow at first, as if she’s remembering how to love you with her fingers, but it’s like she never forgot at all.
You gasp, hips rocking helplessly against her, desperate to have her closer still.
Your eyes are locked on hers, and you couldn’t look away if you wanted to.
You don’t look away as your hand slips between your bodies, sliding past hers to slip between her own thighs. She’s warm and shaking already beneath your touch, and you feel her movements falter as she presses her forehead against yours.
Your name falls from her lips like it’s the only thing keeping her tethered here.
Then you're moving; together this time. Breath hitched, skin flushed, hands shaking. Her mouth finds any skin she can find, pressing gentle kisses to your cheek, your jaw, your lips, and she presses you tighter, like if she lets go, you'll vanish.
Your fingers curl deeper, and it’s her turn to gasp, the sound breaking between you. You’re tangled in each other, so close you don’t know where one ends.
She gasps again, and then all of the tension flows out of her as she breaks open in your arms, clutching you to her even as she jerks against you.
Your name on her lips sends you over the edge. Your hand fumbles in hers when it hits you, and you bury your face in her neck, biting back a sound that sneaks past you anyway. She holds you the whole time despite her own breath shaking.
You finally collapse into each other, chests heaving, arms wrapping around each other, both trembling as you breathe like you’d forgotten how.
And for a moment, you sit there in silence as she traces along her spine, and then softly, so quietly you could’ve missed it.
“Do you still want me?”
You lift your head just enough to look at her.
“What?”
“I need to know if you still want me,” she says, voice shaking. “Because I still want you, and if this was just… closure. I need to know now before I let myself break all the way.”
You can’t answer right away, not when she looks like this. Not when her mouth is trembling, even though she’s trying to be brave, not when the flush is still spread across her cheeks. Not when she’s finally letting the fear show.
“Oh, Emily…”
Your hand trails up from her neck to her chin, and you cradle her face.
You watch as she blinks, bracing herself for a goodbye.
“Emily, you hurt me,” your words are a whisper.
“I know–” she starts to pull back, but you don’t let her, moving your other hand to cradle the other side of her face.
“Let me finish,” you murmur, thumb trailing across her bottom lip.
“It’s not gonna be easy. I can’t go through this again, Em. I can’t sleep next to someone who’s not really there.”
“I understand.”
“Jesus, Emily, I said let me finish.”
“Huh?” Her eyes snap up to yours.
“I love you, you idiot.”
“What?”
“I. Love. You.”
You say each word deliberately, and it’s like you’re trying to anchor yourself to her with them.
“I love you too.”
“Good,” you let yourself smile now. “Because fixing this? It’s gonna take work. Real work and it’s gonna be messy. Me, you, therapy. Counseling. It’s gonna take all of it.”
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying I still want you. I never stopped wanting you. But Emily? If we’re doing this, you can’t shut me out again.”
“I know,” she says, steadier than you’ve seen her all night. “I swear, I know.”
“I mean it, Emily. You don’t have to always talk to me, but I need you to try. You can’t keep swallowing everything down until there’s nothing left for either of us to hold.”
She nods, turning her face to kiss your palm softly.
“Are you sure?”
The crackle of the baby monitor answers before you can, and both of your heads whip toward it.
“Mommy?” The voice is soft, slurred with sleep and dreams. “Da ‘coons are makin’ soup again.”
You both freeze for a second, and then you’re laughing, breathless and warm.
You look back at her, and the words spill out, honest and real.
“No,” you say softly. “I’m scared out of my mind. But… if anyone’s worth it? It’s you”.
You lean in, pressing a gentle kiss to her mouth like it’s a promise. When you pull back, you take her hand, threading your fingers together.
“And besides,” you smile, brushing your thumb over her knuckles. “I think we owe it to our little raccoon to try.”
Her face cracks into a grin, and it nearly knocks the air from your lungs, because you’re sure it's the first real smile you’ve seen from her in over a year.
“She’s never gonna let the raccoon thing go, is she?”
“Not a chance.”
And then it's her turn to lean in to kiss you, and when your lips meet, it feels like the beginning of something new.

File #002: The One Bed Conspiracy Pairing: Emily Prentiss x Reader Summary: There's only one bed. Penelope Garcia is DEFINITELY to blame. You... are not handling it well. Rating: T WC: ~2.4k CW: Queer Themes, Strong Language, Mutual Pining, Workplace Shenanigans, Emotional Repression, Penelope Garcia will forever be a Chaos Gremlin Series Page
Fate has a funny way of fucking you over.
It doesn’t hit you like a train – that would be merciful. Instead, it waits. It seeps in, creeping closer while you still believe you’re in control, like it's waiting until you’ve said the scary thing out loud. And only then, once you’ve admitted to yourself, Penelope Garcia, and God herself, that you might just be in love with your boss, does it strike.
Which is how you end up in Arizona less than a week later, trailing behind Emily Prentiss across the cracked pavement outside a roadside hotel like some sad little gay duckling with no survival instincts.
You’re exhausted and sore, and the heat has to be doing something to your brain because somewhere between the second crime scene and your third iced coffee, you made the catastrophic decision to volunteer to room with Emily.
You said it without thinking, it was easy, comfortable. You two normally share a room when you’re doubled up, but that was before you were slowly falling into a spiral made up of badly repressed feelings and gay panic.
You were trying to be responsible.
Which is hilarious now because nothing about this decision was responsible, especially not when you’re hovering behind her, trying to hide how you’re unraveling like the protagonist of a Jane Austen novel.
Somehow in the war with yourself, you don’t notice when Emily stops in front of a door until you nearly collide.
You stumble to a halt, barely catching yourself with one hand against the stucco before Emily turns to face you, one perfect eyebrow raised.
“You good?”
No. You are not good. You should be, after all, you’ve interrogated spree killers, stared down psychopaths, and somehow talked someone into releasing his hostages last month. This should be easy.
“Hot,” you blurt out, suddenly debating whether jumping into traffic is a worthy endeavor.
Emily’s gaze flicks over you, the corner of her mouth lifting in amusement as you bury yourself deeper. “I didn’t mean you- Wait, not that you’re not hot. Fuck- I meant the weather. Arizona. The whole... sun thing. I think it's frying my brain.”
Her head tilts then, and it looks like she is trying very hard not to smile.
“The desert’ll do that to you.”
“I think I just need to cool off.”
She turns back to the door then, sliding the keycard through the lock. “Let’s hope the AC works then.”
You follow her inside and immediately regret every decision you’ve ever made.
Because there in the middle of the room, like it's taunting you, is one bed. One sad, creaky-looking queen bed with a motel-issued floral comforter that probably predates Emily joining the BAU.
You stop just over the threshold.
“Fuck.”
“Figures,” she mutters, like this isn’t the first time this has happened.
"I’ll call the front desk,” you offer, moving to grab your phone.
“Don’t bother. There’s some kind of convention in town, we were lucky to get the rooms we have.”
“Of course.”
You stand there, staring at each other for a beat, until you open your mouth.
“I’ll take the floor?”
“Are you offering me the bed, or trying to martyr yourself and your back?”
“I just don’t want to make you uncomfortable."
“You’re not,” she huffs, a quiet laugh escaping her. “You never do.”
Your heart promptly falls out of your chest and under the yellowing mini fridge.
“We’re both adults, it’s just until we catch this guy, we’ll survive.”
“Right.”
“I promise, I don’t bite.”
You make a noise that you hope passes for a laugh as you finally close the door behind you, praying your full body malfunction isn’t obvious.
Emily’s already tossed her go-bag onto the dresser, shrugging off her blazer with the kind of casual grace that deserves to be illegal under federal statute. She rolled her sleeves up on the jet, and now you have to force yourself to look away before she catches you staring.
She pulls her pajamas and toiletry bag out of the duffel, then glances towards the bathroom.
“You mind if I shower first?”
“Nope! Go right ahead.”
“Thanks, try not to get lost in the 80s.” she says, halfway to the door.
“Will do,” you manage to force out, despite your voice being thin.
The door shuts behind her, and as the water starts to run, you feel the tension leech from your body, finally releasing the breath you’ve been holding since you left the precinct.
You move towards the bed, collapsing on it as you pull out your phone and stab at Penelope’s name.
She picks up on the first ring, because of course she does.
“Well, well, well,” she drawls. “If it isn’t my favorite emotionally composed field agent.”
“I am going to kill you.”
“Get in line, sweetheart. What’s wrong?”
“There’s only one bed, P.”
“Oh no,” she gasps dramatically. “How awful!”
“Penelope… you had something to do with this didn’t you?”
“Babe, would I hack into the system, change her reservation to have one bed, on the off chance you would volunteer to room with her?”
“Yes.”
“You are absolutely right, sweet cheeks,” she says, suddenly sounding extremely smug. “Hypothetically, of course.. if I want you to confront your feelings. What better place to do it than in a hotel room with one bed.”
“Penelope, we are WORKING.”
“Oh please. You’ve solved cases on zero sleep, knee deep in swamp water, pretending not to be concussed. You can survive a little workplace sexual tension.”
“This is not just a little sexual tension. This is- nope. Nope. Nevermind.”
“No, go on, this is what?”
“I promise I will kill you.”
“No you won’t, you love me too much.”
“That was before you meddled when I specifically asked you not to!”
“When have I ever listened to you?”
You groan, dragging a hand over your face like it might contain the rising panic.
“You’re welcome, by the way.”
“Penelope-”
“I gave you a gift! A beautifully wrapped, morally grey gift.”
“I am going to kill you.”
“Then I’ll die as I lived: matchmaking with glitter on my hands, and lesbian chaos in my heart.”
“You’re insane-” you’re interrupted as the bathroom door clicks open behind you.
You turn just in time to see Emily emerge from a cloud of steam, towel in hand, damp hair tucked behind her ears, and looking devastating in an old FBI shirt and shorts.
“P, I gotta go.”
“Wait!”
You hang up on her before she can say another word, quickly locking your phone as Emily stops mid-step.
“Should I be concerned that you’re threatening to kill Garcia, Agent?” she asks, voice low and a little amused.
“No. It’s fine, she’s just being unhinged.”
“You’re threatening murder, but she’s the unhinged one?”
“She deserved it!”
Emily laughs then, and somehow it knocks the breath right out of you.
“I’ll take your word for it.”
You stand there, holding your bag as she moves towards the bed, like a dog waiting to be released.
“Bathroom’s all yours,” she adds, tossing her towel onto the chair.
You nod mutely and slip inside, the door closing behind you with a soft click.
You brace your hands on the edge of the sink, staring at your reflection. Your cheeks are flushed, your eyes are wide, and if you didn’t know better, you’d think you can see your heart pounding in your chest.
You are a federal agent. You’ve walked through crime scenes covered in blood. You once disarmed a man using nothing but a tactical pen and your shoe. You can handle Emily Prentiss in shorts, and that dangerous smirk.
“Get it together,” you whisper, as you start the shower. “You’re an adult. You’re a professional. You are not going to pass out over your boss.”
You groan as you slip into the shower, letting the water wash over you like it’ll drown the panic. It doesn’t help because she’s still out there, probably flipping through a case file, completely unaware of the war crimes she’s committed against your self control.
This is fine. You’re fine. You will survive sharing a bed with the woman you just happen to be in love with.
This is not fine.
You are absolutely, irrevocably, catastrophically fucked.
You shower quickly, and dry off even faster, hoping it’ll snap you into normalcy. However you’re not that lucky, and you’re still shaking as you brush your teeth and pull on your pajamas. You spare one last glance at yourself in the mirror.
“You will be fine,” you whisper. “Just go to bed, you’ll be fine in the morning.”
You force yourself out of the bathroom, trying to keep your breathing even as Emily looks up from the folder in her hands. She’s already under the comforter, glasses perched low on her nose, cast in a soft light that would make poets commit crimes.
“Feel better?”
You nod softly, moving to your side of the bed, plugging your phone in as she closes the file and pulls off her glasses.
“Lights off?”
“That’s fine.”
She clicks the lamp off, the room dropping into shadow, lit only by the glow from the parking lot that seeps in through the crack in the curtains.
You climb carefully into the bed, moving like you’re being hunted. Emily shifts to make space, and the mattress dips beneath you, creaking once. You let out a deep breath as you settle into the space. The comforter stretches between you, and the room is filled with the soft hum of the air conditioner.
You lie there, flat on your back, tensed as if moving even a millimeter will expose you. You can still feel the heat radiating from her side of the bed, despite the fact that she’s not even touching you.
The silence stretches between you, heavy and thick, before she breaks it softly.
“I can hear you overthinking.”
Her voice is quiet now, just a little rough from exhaustion, and it makes your throat tighten.
“Just go to sleep,” she adds.
You close your eyes then, listening to the sound of her breathing and desperately trying not to move.
You don’t remember falling asleep, but you wake up warm.
Too warm.
Your brain is like an old computer, booting slowly, as if it’s trying to protect you from a full system crash. The AC is still humming, and cool air hits your flushed skin.
Then it hits you, because you’re not alone in bed, you’re not even on your side of the bed. You are, in fact, on Emily Prentiss.
Your face is buried in her shoulder, one leg slung between hers, while your entire body covers her like a tragically gay blanket. You can feel the weight of her hand on your back, as if it belongs there.
You are a koala.
You are a fucking koala, and you’re clinging to her like she’s a eucalyptus tree made of sex and nightmares.
Before you can fall further into your spiral, her phone rings, and you freeze.
Emily shifts under you, the arm around your back tightening slightly as she reaches for the nightstand. Her voice is low and rough with sleep, but maddeningly steady.
“Prentiss.”
You close your eyes, hoping that when you open them again you’ll be on your side of the bed, instead of sprawled across your boss.
She listens for a few beats, humming softly.
“Understood. We’ll be there in 20.”
You are suddenly very, very still as she shifts again.
There’s a brief moment where you think you may have gotten away with it, before her voice breaks the silence again.
“I know you’re awake.” Her voice is tinged with amusement, and you can hear the smirk on her lips.
You want to die, just roll straight off the bed and out of the motel window, but you stay still, too afraid to even breathe.
“You really weren’t kidding about the whole koala thing.”
You groan into her shoulder before you can stop yourself, and you can feel the slight shake from her laughter.
“In my defense,” you mutter, muffled by cotton and humiliation, “I was unconscious.”
“I noticed,” she chuckles, “S’why I didn’t wake you. You seemed pretty peaceful for someone committing a full-scale cuddle assault.”
As if you remember where you are, you jolt upright, scrambling backwards and off the bed like it's on fire.
“Shit– I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to–”
Emily props herself up on one elbow, grinning as she watches you stumble over your own feet.
“I’m not complaining, you were comfortable,” she says, raising a brow. “Honestly, the commitment is impressive.”
“Emily!” you groan, dragging a hand down your face.
“What? You really went for it. Full body cling with zero hesitation.”
“I was asleep, Emily. That means I was unconscious and not responsible for my actions.”
“Sure… still it was A+ form. Very tactical.”
“I cannot believe this is happening.”
“Relax,” she leans against the headboard now. “You do this on the jet, I knew what I was getting into. You wrapped yourself around JJ on the way home from Oregon last month.”
“That’s different though! She’s not my boss.”
“So, I’m just your boss now?”
“Please stop talking!”
Emily grins as she glances at the clock, before she sighs and tosses back the blanket.
“As much fun as it is to watch you panic, we have to leave in ten minutes.”
Your feet are still rooted to the floor, and your heart is hammering while you watch her stand stretch like this was just another Tuesday. As if she regularly woke up to you clinging to her like she was the only thing grounding you.
“We’re still in pajamas,” the words are weak, dying in your throat as you force them out.
“Excellent observation,” she says, grabbing her go-bag. “So unless you think you’ll profile better in FBI issue sweats, I suggest getting dressed.”
You stare helplessly as she drops her shorts and starts pulling on pants with a practiced efficiency, once again feeling like surviving this case might just kill you.
You blink as your eyes meet in the mirror where she’s tying her hair back, smirk stretching dangerously across her lips.
“Get a move on, koala. We’ve got a murder to solve.”
You flush and for the second time in twenty minutes, you debate throwing yourself out the window. Instead you turn toward your bag and head into the bathroom, praying the floor will swallow you whole before you have to come back out.

Rating: T WC: ~1.6k CW: Queer Themes, Strong Language, Mutual Pining, Workplace Shenanigans, Emotional Repression, Slow Burn, Mild Alcohol, Cookie-Based Confessions, Penelope Garcia is a Chaos Gremlin Chapter 1/?
Penelope’s apartment smells like cinnamon and conspiracy.
It’s the first week of October, the air is chilly, and the woman has declared a seasonal war. String lights wrap around every inch of the apartment like a crime scene made of color, and scented candles litter every flat surface, most named something aggressively autumnal, like Pumpkin Bloodlust or Witch’s Brew. The couch has been overtaken by a mountain of surprisingly judgmental throw pillows, and her kitchen counter is covered in flour and edible glitter.
You’re elbow-deep in sugar cookie dough, sleeves rolled up, and jaw aching from trying not to scream. Penelope, however, is wrapped up in a bright pink blanket like a vacationing gremlin of mischief, complete with wine and laser-focused on the TV show currently assaulting both your senses and the concept of law enforcement.
“Penelope…” you mutter, staring at the purple ghost sprinkles that litter the counter. “Remind me again why I’m doing this.”
“Because JJ guilt-tripped me into helping bake cookies for Henry’s bake sale, and explicitly told you to make sure I don’t bring anything with edible glitter,” she replies, not even glancing away from the screen. “It also gives us the perfect excuse to catch up on Murder on Her Terms.”
You glance over to the TV, where the detective is currently straddling a murder suspect while dramatically reciting Shakespeare. Her gun is tucked into the waistband of her pants, and she has a cut above her brow, yet is still giving come-hither eyes to the camera.
“Is this.. supposed to be procedural?”
“She’s not just solving crimes,” Penelope says reverently. “She’s filling the emotional void inside every woman she meets.”
"She literally bribed a judge with a martini in the last episode.”
“And? That just makes her an innovator.” “More like a walking ethics violation.”
“So? She’s hot.”
You huff out a laugh, shaking your head as you go back to the dough.
“You are such a menace.”
“Don’t pretend like you’re immune. She’s got that whole dark-and-damaged vibe. She would totally ruin your life, but you’d thank her for it.”
“Jesus Pen. She’s really not my type.”
“Oh please,” she scoffs. “She is exactly your type. Black boots and emotional damage topped with bone structure that could slice diamonds. Honestly, babe, if she were just slightly more repressed with more wine-related trauma, she'd be Emily.”
You snort, trying to bite back a smile.
“There it is! You only blush like that when you’ve been imagining our boss ruining you in five different ways.”
“Shut up!”
“I will not. After all, I’m the one who covered for you after you moaned when she called you ‘Agent’ last month.”
“It was one time.”
“You made a sound.”
“She had her hand on my shoulder!”
“And now you’re just frosting cookies like that didn’t fundamentally alter your DNA?”
You roll your eyes, but the smile that tugs at the corner of your mouth tells the truth. You press the cookie cutter back into the dough, a little slower this time.
“Okay, first of all, you are exaggerating.”
Penelope hums, unimpressed.
“And second,” you add, quieter now, “that woman on screen would absolutely ruin my life. With witnesses.”
“See?” Penelope grins triumphantly. “Growth!”
“No Pen,” you shake your head. “That’s not what I mean. She needs to be watched, to be wanted. She wants to walk into a room and feel everyone’s eyes on her like she needs oxygen.”
Penelope tilts her head like a confused puppy.
“Emily’s different. She doesn’t want that. She doesn't need to be the center of attention, hell half the time she looks like she’d rather fade into the background if she knew the room could stay calm.”
You glance back to the TV, where the detective is now yelling at a suspect under neon lights. “She wants the noise,” you say softly. “Emily doesn’t. She’s content to just… exist.”
You look at Penelope now, sighing as your hands still.
“When she walks into a room, she’s not performing, she doesn’t demand anything from it. She just… is. And somehow, the world just… settles. Like it’s making space for her.”
“She makes it feel like I don't have to prove anything. Like I don’t need to be sharper or louder or smarter. I can just be me. And that’s enough.”
Your words hang there for a moment, the air thick with tension and the scent of vanilla.
Penelope just stares at you for a moment.
“What the fuck was that?”
“What?”
“That,” she says, pointing between you and the mixing bowl. “That right there. Normally you talk about Emily like some feral gay gremlin who wants to be bent over her desk, but that? That was pining. Girl, if I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were in love with her.”
You don’t answer, you can’t.
You just stand there like a deer in headlights, watching as the truth uncoils from your chest like smoke.
“Oh my god. You’re in love with her?”
You meet her eyes and nod, just once, as if you’re afraid to move.
Penelope exhales sharply, incredulous and soft all at once.
“Don’t just sit there with those guilty lesbian eyes,” she says, moving closer to you now, as if she can pull the truth out through sheer force of will. “You have to say it.”
You look down at the counter, hands still dusted in flour, breath caught in your chest. The words are there, you can feel them taking shape, but they feel… fragile.
“I think I’m in love with Emily.” The words slip out like a secret you’ve been keeping from even yourself.
They linger there, as if they have weight, heavier than anything you’ve ever said before.
Penelope just stares at you, before she drops her wineglass onto the counter with a clink.
“Oh. My. God.”
You blink at her, stunned, heart pounding like it wants to burst from your chest and hurl itself into traffic.
“I thought you just wanted her to bend you over her desk.”
“I do!” The words burst out of you, flour puffing off your hands as you throw them up. “I do want that. Desperately, painfully so. I have imagined that many times in deeply concerning detail.”
You groan as Penelope lifts a single eyebrow.
“But apparently I also want to emotionally connect with her over soup and coffee. I want to hold her hand at the goddamn farmer’s market and buy overpriced jam because it’s her favorite. Oh my god, I am in love with her.”
“You’re disgusting.”
“I know.” You drop your head into your hands, sighing. “But it doesn’t matter, P.”
“What do you mean ‘it doesn’t matter?’”
“It doesn’t matter because she’s my boss, and she’s Emily. She’s brilliant and stupidly hot in a way that should be illegal. She speaks like six languages and smells like citrus and safety. She’s Emily, and I’m… me. Penelope. I am not the kind of human that women like her fall for. Trust me, I literally got stuck in my own jacket on the jet last week.”
Penelope just stares at you like she doesn’t know whether to cry or throw you through a window.
“If I had a dollar for every time you underestimated yourself, I’d have enough to bribe God into giving you a happy ending.”
You chuckle softly.
“Okay, two things. First, if I ever hear you talk about yourself like that again, I’m revoking your caffeine privileges. You’re amazing. Yes, you’re a little unhinged, but it’s cute, and you make life fun.”
The noise that escapes you is halfway between a sigh and a whimper.
“Second, you are so fucking blind if you think she’s not into you.”
“She’s not-”
“Don’t interrupt me,” Penelope snaps. “I literally play with code and chaos for a living, but even I can see how much she’s into you. She brings you coffee, and not just plain so you can add your own accoutrements, she knows exactly how you like it, annoying order and all. That’s fucking wifebehavior.”
“She’s just a good friend.”
“I swear to god, babe. She literally changes seats on the jet so you’re next to her, and she keeps the gum you chew when you’re motion sick in her go-bag. She’s not just into you, she’s fucking gone.”
“She’s still my boss, Penelope.”
“So what you’re telling me now is that bureaucracy is the only thing holding back this gay love affair? Because, I will hack God herself to make it happen”
“Don’t meddle, please.”
“I would never.” she says, already reaching for her phone.
“Penelope Garcia."
“I’m just checking Instagram!”
“You don’t even use Instagram.”
“Pinterest?”
“Penelope..”
“Fine,” she says with a dramatic huff. “No meddling. For now.”
Her phone buzzes and she freezes as she glances at the screen.
“What now?”
“Uh.. don’t kill me?”
She turns the phone around so you can read the message.
JJ 6:47 pm
Just realized the bake sale is next Thursday. Please tell me you haven't started baking yet.
You just stare at her, before calmly picking up the cookie you were about to frost, and throwing it at her head. She shrieks, and ducks, laughter echoing through the apartment.
“Unbelievable,” you mutter, wiping your hands on a dishtowel. “I just bared my soul to you over cookies that we don’t even need until NEXT WEEK.”
Penelope is grinning as she peeks over the couch pillow she’s now using as a shield. “Maybe, but you have cookies to go with your catharsis now.”
You roll your eyes, but a smile forms anyway.
There may be glitter in your hair courtesy of your best friend who is definitely plotting something in that devious brain of hers. The kitchen is a disaster, the cookies are unnecessary, and the scent of chaos and vanilla lingers.
But somewhere in the middle of it all, something shifts quietly inside of you.
You are, undeniably and irrevocably, in love with Emily Prentiss.
And you have no fucking idea what you’re supposed to do about it.
"No, I'm telling you...the chopsticks changed my life."
