Manual Memory Interface
Final mock-ups of the design. Only the left side has change since last blog post on the posters.
Mock-up of the pad.
Envelope Design
I finally managed to write and clean up (with Stephen) the text for the poster/envelope. Here is the final result:
‘Manual Memory Interface’ is an attempt at visualising connotation.
You can read the interface in your own unique way.
You are invited to interact with the interface.
You can take home as many parts as you like to create your own poster.
The envelope design:
Webpage Designs
I have prepared visualisations for the page I plan to have fully operational till the end of the year.
Final Designs + Print test
I ave decided on the colour scheme and created the final designs, they are also almost fully cleaned. Unfortunately I still am not sure what to do with the left, not interactive, side and what to write on it. The text there should be simple and enough and eye catching that the audience understand what they are viewing and go ahead and interact with the interface.
I have also decided to replace oval dots in the typography with the background hyphens. It changes the type slightly and also adds another link between the poster’s elements.
A gif to show the possible outcomes.
I also printed the full designs and was very happy withe the new blue tone and overall the colour choice.
Cleanup
The type of design I decided to create has a lot of potential typographic “disasters” and I spend a lot of time cleaning them up. A lot of it depends on choosing the course of action, what to move around, whee should I clean up the background or how close the pattern of hyphen should come near the letters.
The irradiation of white is also an unique problem. White letters need to be scaled down a bit (5% in this instance) to account for them looking always slightly bigger than black ones. As I am using white and black letters in close proximity I need to be very cautious when deciding where do I want the letters to be white.
Colour Test Prints
I have printed out various new and old colour compositions and tested them in full scale. It was the first time I had seen the design almost 1:1. I still have a series of doubts if it is the right size and ratio.
The various symbols that could be a replacement for the hyphens did not work as well as the hyphen in my opinion. The pattern in different percentages of black just added confusing colour t the mix, so I decided to use black hyphens as before.
I am still undecided when it comes to the colour. I really liked the slightly orange yellow and red, so I will try to compose a triad based on them.
Tutorial with Harriet
After a tutorial with Harriet I am more confident my work is going the right direction. She said that the designs seem more streamlined and more cohesive. We talked about different hanging options for the piece. I should test out various stubs and glues before the degree show as well as the longevity of the compound glue.
Harriet suggested using also small scale type on the piece. It is a neat idea, but I have no idea what text it should incorporate this way. Still, a thing to consider, especially because it would provide an additional level to interact with.
I am going forward with the designs and will print a variety of colours to test which ones are best in digital print. I am also going to test different signs for the small pattern.
New design
I have created the full set of posters. They are now more cryptic with their message, which is actually a good thing. As I really did not want to sound self-righteous. They are now a commentary on our media consumption. As well as a visual representation of connotation. The posters will change when somebody interacts with them, but also when they will be read - a person can make their own assumptions and connotations based on the sets of word they encounter.
gif proof of concept
“Devour” animation
My new set of words and typography is getting more and more involved with media and the consumption of it. I want the images to strengthen this idea, so I decided to go with a single image for all the poster - a face consuming or talking. The final physical piece won’t be as straightforward as a gif animation, still it has a potential to create very interesting images.
Idea streamlining, new ligatures
I have decided to scrap the poster I have shown at the physical work week and get back into designing ligatures. It was pointed out that they are the strongest point of my idea and I should focus on them and try to say more with less.
Physical Work Week
I have managed to create one poster for the physical work week. My course mates were overall impressed with the scope of the design but I feel quite confused by the theme and message. It seemed a bit too much to describe and get everybody up to speed.
The piece is supposed to be on Brexit, with Britain and Europe as two Victorian era giant lizards fighting. The B movie theme is not really resonating with anybody and I start to wonder if it is just too much.
Harriet has suggested I should focus on the ligatures and the semantic meaning and I think I agree with this suggestion.
Promotional poster - test of visual style
My finalised promotional poster design.
I have created this image to test ideas mentioned before and how they will behave together. The poster combines a new grid, halftone image and typography. I have added a pattern of hyphens based on the typeface to break up the whiteness of the background. It also manages to combine the background with the rest of the image, making it more cohesive.
I am please with this outcome and I proceeded to screen-print it at Bower Ashton. Instead of 3 colours + black I used 2 and blended them to create the 3rd one, to mimic the digital design.
Poster Sketches, pixel and halftone experiments
The image of a brain with eyes is a ply and a joke on the whole perception angle. I was quite unsure how to create an image for the posters and started experimenting.
I used pixel arts as the basis for my image making. I have experimented with various halftones. I have started to lean towards simple line halftones with a fixed angle. The design will loose the „fluidity”. However, fixing the lines at 55 and 125 degrees will give it more streamlining, as this is the value of A4 rectangle’s diagonal.
Finished Memory Zine
I have finished and printed the memory zine. The thermochromic ink works really well in this format, as the pages touching conduct heat to other parts of the zine. That being said the process black and the black of the interactive ink do not blend together as I hoped for. The thermal ink just seems grey in comparison.
Installation “Branding”
I have created a simple “brand” for the Manual Memory Interface. I have used Inknut Antiqua ExtraBold. I decided to just have typography in it. Not being said, the typography is quite playful and adding a sign to the logotype would simply clutter it.
I really enjoyed creating ligatures for the logotype and plan to create even more. They could probably be treated as a comment for human perception and bias. As a person that has previous knowledge can decipher the logotype. The ligatures border on being confusing and really stretching the legibility of the design.
The colour choices are simply in anticipation of random “glitches” I want the posters to have. Both sets compliment each other and have potential. As always with colours in my design process they will inevitably change, but they are a great basis for now.
Grid sketches
I have created a series of grids that should invoke the idea of fluidity and change. I tried sketching on them, with promising results. I want to crate illustrations with halftones corresponding with the grid. his could prove technically difficult how to find the sweet spot for a raster.
The typeface I have used recently for projects (Inknut Antiqua) also has proven to be very promising when combined with those grids. I have started to play around with it and it has great potential for typographic creativity.
