My Review of Ralph Schomp MINI: This is my 3rd MINI. I have had service for each of them at Ralph Schomp. Not sure how long Robert has been there but he has always been so helpful. When I go in there he always recognizes me and knows my name. They always offer a loaner, wait time has always been just as they said it would be. This time a part needed to be ordered And I know they will call or e-mail when it arrives.

Coupe heads Mini's Frankfurt stand display
Mini's Coupe will be the star of the brand's Frankfurt motor show as the two-seater makes its world public debut next week.
The distinctively designed sports car's roof is said to have been modelled on a backwards facing baseball cap, and retains much of the look of the concept car that made its debut at the last Frankfurt show two years ago.
It will be available with four different engine options from launch, with the 208bhp John Cooper Works sitting on top of the range.
Mini says the 'three-box structure' of the Coupe, brought about by that funky baseball cap styling, means that this is actually one of the most spacious cars it makes. The luggage space, at 280 litres, is bigger than the Clubman estate (which has just 260 litres), although the Coupe is aided in this quest for practicality by the lack of rear seats.
As well as the new Coupe, the company will be showing off the Mini Yours range of options that allow the owner to personalise their car. An illustration of what is possible with this will come from the Mini Inspired by Goodwood, a hatchback that comes with a host of different add-ons.
Mini Yours includes the likes of unusual paint finishes, trim elements, upholstery variants and interior colours, and also a selection of equipment packages.
The new Original Mini Accessories range will also be launched at the show. This will include steering wheels, gearshift knobs, interior trim strips and other retro-fit components for the interior.

My Review of Ralph Schomp MINI: From my first contact with Schomp through the web site to walking into the dealership to driving away in a new Mini, my experience was amazing. Don made the sales process easy at every step, and although it was a very busy Saturday, I felt like I could have been the only customer in the place because I was treated so well. Very impressive experience, and I would definitely tell my friends to go to Schomp if the question ever comes up. Thank you!

My Review of Ralph Schomp MINI: There is a little magic in the way this dealership approaches business. We had visited this dealership at 5 times or more over 9 months as we explored purchasing a mini. Love, love, love the relaxed atmosphere. We were not ignored (even when it was busy) but we were also left alone to explore until we were ready to talk to someone. The Mini's sell themselves (if you have a love for this type of car). No two cars are alike in features and having knowledgeable sales staff was key in learning about the different features/packages. Love my new mini (we have two - a CooperS convertible and now the hardtop) - Mini-Me and Mini-Too. Don owned a Mini and could speak from personal experience. Tyler provided a great overview of the car - including the Mini-Connected system. We had a good understanding of the features before we left, but there was more to explore on our own.

My Review of Ralph Schomp MINI: The only poor mark I can give is that the response to my financing request took so long. However, my credit union took just as long to process, so it's likely that this was due to my personal situation. It would have been nice if the finance team could have called me with updates, even if they didn't have one, though.
Overall, my experience was very pleasant. I never felt pressured and new through research that I was getting a GREAT deal on the car! Don Bailey was wonderful to work with and made the experience more pleasant than I could have expected. Jennifer and Monica from the finance team were also very friendly and informative.

MINI Builds Its Two-Millionth Car
Just ten years after the restart of production, MINI has assembled the two-millionth car at its Oxford plant in the UK.
The particular car was a MINI Cooper Convertible, painted in a special White Silver metallic with a blue denim room, and fitted with bespoke components both inside and out.
To put that in perspective, it took Volkswagen from 1937 to 1957 to build two million Beetles, although civilian automobile production was halted due to Germany's involvement in World War II.
To commemorate the event, the car was driven off the production line by British Prime Minister David Cameron, who called MINI, āa fantastic symbol of the UKās strength in the global automotive industryā and āa great British manufacturing success story."
Of the two million cars produced, approximately 1.5 million have been exported to dealers in over 90 countries. The top five export markets are the U.S., Germany, France, China and Italy, and if you parked two million MINIs bumper to bumper, theyād stretch from the Oxford plant all the way to the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
If youād like to add the two-millionth MINI to your garage, itās up for grabs. No amount of money can buy the car, which will be awarded to the lucky winner of MINIās Facebook campaign called āTwo Million MINIs - Two Million Faces.ā Entering is as simple as adding your picture to their Facebook wall, and agreeing to MINIās terms and conditions.
Weād call that a few minutes well-spent for the chance to win a free (and highly collectible) MINI.

Girls Love All Things Miniā¦
I posed the question to my Facebook friends the other day: āIf we judged a date by their car (but I know we donāt, itās really personality) what would you look at first? Make/model? (If so what tops the list?) Cleanliness? Age? Color? Height? Speed? What getās a girl going over her main squeezes car?ā I thought this would be a relevant topic, but I was quickly educated by my friends.
Many of them sighted that maintenance was among the top of the desirable qualities car list. No lady wants to get into a BMW that wonāt carry her past the end of the block. Next, was the make/model of the car, followed by the speed potential of the ride. I have not found any woman that looks for practicality in a car, at least not my friends.
Sadly, however, the misnomer is present that women-drivers want 4-door automatics that can handle lots of luggage and passengers in every stage of their lives. This may be true for some with families as they begin to grow, but there is no need to assume that every woman needs or even wants a minivan. Maybe most women donāt realize there is more to life than minivans and SUVās when babies come along. Women represent 51% of the car purchasing decision power in a relationship, so we are a force to be reckoned with.
An article from AutoGuide.com said that a study examining women car purchases in 2010 discovered that women favored practicality and fuel-efficiency over looks and speed. The study showed that 47.9% of women purchased Miniās. Now, I donāt know if the people studying the sales or the lady writing the article has never been in a Mini, but practical is not the first thing I think of, itās speed, agility, and agressivness. Think Charlize Theron in The Italian Job.
The first Miniās took the industry by surprise in 1959 with a sub-compact capable of carrying 4- adults comfortably and not sacrifice power or handling, although in the early days many younger consumers would see how many people could actually fit into the spacious interior. Designer Alec Issigonis moved the wheels to the edges of the body and turned the engine sideways creating a cockpit that was more spacious than some of the more popular cars of the day. In 1961 British racing legend John Cooper took one of the Miniās and created the Mini Cooper 997, a rally car for the history books. By 1977 the Mini had garnered over 4 million sales world wide, but was forced out of the US due to strict emissions regulations. Good thing for us ladies though, the Mini was revamped in the 90ā²s and in 2002 reemerged in the American market. The Mini was awarded 2003 Car of the Year and sells almost 2 million units a year.
With six body styles to fit that practicality assumption, the Miniās range in horsepower starts at 121hp for the base Cooper, then up to 181hp for the Cooper-S, and tops out at 208hp for the John Cooper Works. That means that with the stock 1.6L, 4-cylinder power plant 47.9% of cost conscious women went from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds if they chose the moderately priced $20,000 MSRP entry model. I doubt many women would start at the base model though, we are a bit stylish when we pick things, so I believe many moms, such as myself, would fall for the John Cooper convertible. At a mere $35,000 MSRP we can carry the old man, two rug rats and all their soccer gear with the top down at a top speed of 146mph, because everyone knows we are always late for something. The 208hp, twin-scrolled turbocharged engine can get the grocery getter from 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and not break a sweat. Now thatās using your practicle head ladies.
If the convertible isnāt your style, they offer The Clubman. This 4-door (2 full size front doors, 1 mini back door, and full opening cargo doors) Mini boasts a minimum of 9.2 cubic feet of storage with the back seats up and a whopping 32.8 cubic feet with them down, while holding the traditional bulldog stance that keeps the exterior at only 6ā3ā wide and just under 13ā² long. Still not big enough (like most thing in our lives)? Then upgrade to the 5-door Countryman, at 13.48 feet it holds up to 41.3 cubic feet of our stuff, which is really everyone elseās stuff, but we get to haul it around. We wonāt mind because every Mini model is quick, fashionable, and what else⦠oh yeah, practical, fuel-efficient, and cost effective, all the things a girl looks for in her car.

2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman All4 joins Autoblog's Long-Term Garage
Welcoming Mini's Burly Uncle into the Family
See the full gallery on Posterous
The idea of a maxi-Mini runs counter to everything we love about the brand. But despite our misgivings, our own Steven J. Ewing came away suitably impressed with the Mini Countryman when he drove it this time last year. How much did he like it? He insisted we add one to the Autoblog Long-Term Garage.
And here it is.
Coated in two-tone True Blue Metallic (as voted by our readers) and tricked out in Cooper S ALL4 guise, our long-term tester is as maxed out as they come ā with the exception of an automatic transmission, natch. We think we ticked all the right boxes, including Sport and Premium packs, Xenons, Sport suspension and Mini Connected with Navigation, to get the full Countryman experience. And to kick things off, I headed north for a two-day, 500-mile trek up the coast to put our newest family member through its paces.
The good news: Mini's made one of the most entertaining cute 'utes in the world. The bad: You've got to shell out a heap of coin to enjoy it. So let's get this out of the way now: Our 2011 Mini Countryman S ALL4 tester rings up at a cool $38,000. That includes all of the aforementioned kit and what's listed in the spec page on the Countryman Long-Term hub page. Yes, that's a metric ton of cash for a small crossover and we wouldn't expect anything less from an automaker run by ze Germans. But then again, we're an odd use case.
Our long-termer is going to spend time in California, Arizona, Michigan and Ohio. Do I really need the $750 cold-weather package (heated mirrors, washer jets and front seats)? Not in Northern California. But EIC Neff and our Detroit team will. Is the Mini Connected system ($1,750) a necessity? No. But we also want to test out the latest and greatest apps and infotainment functionality, along with a guided tour of the system from BMW's R&D tech center in Mountain View, California.
So it's a pricy compact CUV, but premium build quality and a commensurate amount of luxury doesn't come cheap. Nor should it.
Mini has proven that consumers are willing to pay a premium for a compact car with high-end amenities and solid driving dynamics. The only problem ā aside from the barrier to entry ā was that a diminutive hatch and a long wheelbase variant left a massive chunk of would-be buyers out in the cold. The Countryman stands to rectify that. And our first test would be trying to get an 85-pound LabPointerPitDaneSpaniel comfortable for the 165-mile drive north.
The chances of wedging said puppy into the 16.5 cubic-feet cargo area were... nonexistent, particularly with the subtle slope of the hatch. Thankfully, the two rear buckets fold flat, allowing the trunk to expand into a 41.3 cubic-foot dog house. It'll work, but it's also the Countryman's first Achilles heel. For a family of four to take a vacation, little Jonny and Jane will be carrying luggage on their laps. So it's best to think of the Countryman as a maximized daily driver and occasional weekender for a couple and their only child.
With all our assorted sundries packed up and the navigation system set for the Mendocino Coast, we headed out for the first of two long stints on the freeway and quickly found ourselves stuck in late afternoon traffic west of Berkeley. The combination of stop-and-go, all-wheel drive and a fresh clutch gave me a chance to get intimate with the six-speed manual gearbox. The clutch uptake is on the light side, with the friction point further up the pedal travel than I'd prefer. It's defined, but a little squishy, and the occasional shutter through the ALL4 system makes frequent starts and stops a jolty affair. The six-speed transmission, however, is just as good as any other Mini, with short, chunky throws and a softball-sized shift knob that plunks reassuringly into your palm.
With traffic finally clearing up once we reached 101, it was time to find out if the additional 400 pounds of weight saddled into the Countryman would be too much for the miserly four-cylinder to handle. Naturally, we opted for the S, which tacks on a turbocharger to the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, boosting horsepower to 181 ponies and torque to 177 pound-feet. A deliberate mash of the gas delivers an additional helping of compressed air into the engine, increasingly torque to 192 lb-ft from 1,700 rpm for a few moments.
As this is the same engine fitted to every S-equipped Mini, we weren't expecting horizon-come-hither acceleration, and the Countryman responded in kind. Forward thrust comes on predictably and smoothly, with just a hint of lag below 1,300 rpm as the turbo catches its breath. After that, it's a long, continuous wave of torque until the twist begins to bleed off around 5,000 rpm, necessitating a quick shift to keep things on boil. It's not slow, but the Countryman is suitably quick for something topping out over 3,000 pounds, particularly when you consider we averaged a 25.8 mpg ā on the low side of the EPA-estimated 25 city/31 highway ā during our two-day stint.
While the combination of the Sport suspension and 18-inch runflats (Pirelli Cinturator P7s sized 225/45 R18 at all sides) have the potential on paper for a rough ride, it's anything but on the freeway. At a comfortable cruising speed of 75-80 miles per hour, ruts and divots in the road are felt, but not endured, and there's an overall sense of sure-footedness that you just don't find in most barely burly crossovers.
The major demerit, though, comes in the form of darty steering that's in need of perpetual corrections. On-center feel is slightly dulled at speed (the electro-hydraulic rack is partially to thank/blame), but the moment you dial in the slightest hint of lock, you're off into the next lane. And it's predictably worse in the tightened Sport mode. But while it's a chore to keep up with on the open road, the Countryman's steering found its home when we broke off onto Highway 128 and headed towards the coast.
The sun was setting, the dog was curled up in back and the wife was rustled from her nap when I jumped off the throttle and a quiet cackling emanated from the duo of chromed muffler tips. "What was that?" she asked. I went off on a lengthy explanation about unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust. "Can you make it stop?" Yes, but I wouldn't. It's part of the throttle remapping in Sport mode, but if I'm honest, it's a novelty that wears thin after a few miles.
What doesn't annoy is the Countryman's remarkable body control. That touchy steering is part of a greater whole, which, combined with the stiffened suspension, tweaked throttle and better-than-expected rubber make for an entertaining, encouraging drive. Yes, it rolls, and yes, it's not millimeter precise, but tearing along one of California's great backroads, you'd be forgiven for thinking you're behind the wheel of a top-heavy sports sedan, not a high-riding hatch.
But just as I leaned into the throttle and lined up for the next set of bends, the wife chimed in with a buzzkilling suck of air through her pursed lips. I would have to wring the Countryman out later. And on my own.
That's fine. I've got another three months and an endless assortment of roads to enjoy while the Countryman is in my possession. There's plenty to look forward to, but with one trip down and the three of us no more worse for the wear, our newest family member is already impressing. Next up, a thorough review of the Mini Connected system and a look at the interior. Oh, and proper flogging sans the fam.

Vintage Race Cars Brandish Beauty and Speed at Silverstone
What's better than one Mini Cooper S? Two, of course. It could do everything, from commuting to conquering Rally Monte Carlo. What's not to like?
The Silverstone Classic bills itself as "the worldās biggest classic racing festival." With more than 7,000 cars spanning the history of motorsports, we're not about to argue.
Anything and everything worth seeing or driving descended on Britain's storied Silverstone circuit on July 22 for a glorious weekend of racing. These cars aren't trailer queens. They're driven, and often driven hard. More than 1,000 competed in the weekend's racing as everything from Bugattis to McLarens lapped the famous track...

My Review of Ralph Schomp MINI: We had a great experience at Ralph Schomp Mini Dealership last Thursday, July 22nd. We had taken our 2004 Mini in for service and ended up buying/driving home a brand new Clubman!!! Don Bailey is an exceptional individual and was very helpful in making our purchase experience another good one. (Our 2004 Mini also came from Ralph Schomp) Don went above and beyond when it came to showing me all the fabulous features of my car. He assisted me with programming the XM Radio...and assisted me in getting my cell phone bluetooth connection activated. All these items saved me countless hours should I have had to do this on my own as a 'novice'. It didn't hurt, I suppose, that Don himself drives a Clubman!!! Denise Van Donkelaar
Many students use mobile apps while driving, some even after they crash
New report shows that 35 percent of college students use smart phone apps behind the wheel.
More than one-third of college students use mobile phone applications while driving, according to a new study. Some students even continue the dangerous practice after being in auto accidents while using mobile apps.
After surveying 93 college students who own a smartphone and use Internet-based applications on it at least four or more times per week, researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that 10 percent of the students "often," "almost always" or "always" use mobile apps while driving, while one-third indicated they "sometimes" use the apps while driving.
Ā "The technology is evolving so rapidly that science hasn't caught up to looking at the effects that mobile app usage can have behind the wheel of a car," study researcher Lauren McCartney said in a statement.
"But something needs to be done because in psychological terms, Internet use involves substantial cognitive and visual distraction that exceeds talking or texting, making it much more dangerous," McCartney added.
A 2009 online survey of 4,816 people showed that nearly 60 percent of teens ages 16 to 19 admitted to texting while driving.
"A driver using his or her smartphone is clearly distracted, both visually and cognitively, and really should not be driving," said David Schwebel, director of the UAB Youth Safety Lab.
McCartney will present her findings in August at the 119th American Psychological Association convention in Washington, D.C.

My Review of Ralph Schomp MINI: My experience was very good, with Don Bailey going above and beyond to get the Mini I wanted. I was slightly disappointed that certain options were not available on the mini's in the lot, but Don explained too me the reasons, which I understood. The entire process was smooth, and there was the expected amount of sales pressure from the finance person regarding extended warranties and maintenance. I was a little disappointed, but again understood, that we could not swap out the wheels to ones I preferred. The Mini has been great, and the minor scratches I found are being taken care of. Thank You!
