Ruth Beale

Sing Me a Song with Social Significance, 2010

A specially-formed choir of art students perform 'Sing Me a Song with Social Significance', a hit song in the 1930s musical revue 'Pins and Needles', the first-and-only trade union Broadway hit). The song was found reproduced in the Pioneer Songbook, a 1944 publication held in the Goldsmiths Library, published to celebrate the centenary of the world's first successful consumer cooperative, the Rochdale Pioneers). A set of drawings forms a fictional archive of the song's real-life origins.

A programme of performances hosted on a Soapbox Stage, including covers of 'Sing me a Song with Social Significance' performed by The Pioneer Singers (Goldsmiths MFA students), The Strawberry Thieves socialist choir and three other bands and musicians: Panther Society, Laurence Carey and Macolm Benzie. Twelve drawings of secondary artefacts - souvenirs, commemorative items and library books - were framed on the opposite wall

Commercial and fine art have continuously crossed paths and blurred into an almost united art specialism. This merging is represented in the casting and direct use of the ready-made object. In this exhibition the idea of one creator is an easy one to accept, as the main focus seems visible and unchanging. Yet the works of Jake and I show a clear divide in fine art, commercial objects and their symbolism.

Shoes can be considered as embodiments of our own mark upon the world. This statement doesn’t just refer to the physical earth beneath us, but also to the personal journeys we decide to take, allowing us to imagine like children. Artists such as Francis Alys have compared the act of walking to a form of self–preservation. Using our feet as a strategic tool to avoid the “everyday vices” of modern life, and to focus upon the possibilities of what your feet can take you to. Alys highlights the possibilities of exploration and wandering free. To quote the artist:

“As long as I’m walking, I’m not hiding.” 

“As long as I’m walking, I’m not crying.”

“As long as I’m walking, I’m not falling.”

“As long as I’m walking, I’m not closing.”

In short, the symbol of the shoe can represent concepts that many objects cannot. And, if you disagree, I ask you to see it from my point of view. Walk a mile in my shoes.

Hanna Roloff (*1985 in Sweden). She lives and studies Visual Art at the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo, Norway. Daniela Zahlner (*1986 in Austria). She lives and studies Fine Arts and Film in Vienna, Austria. Both Daniela and Hanna are currently on exchange at the Sculpture Department at Glasgow School of Art.

Leeds College of Art alumnus, Andrew Havenhand, is Assistant Professor of painting at upstate New York’s Syracuse University and he has organised this exhibition of work by both graduates and undergraduates from across their Departments of Art and Transmedia, which includes photography.

The School of Art and Design at Syracuse has a tradition of excellence that goes back more than 130 years;  Syracuse University was actually the first university in the USA to grant a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree.

This is from a letter written in 1965 by  Sol Lewitt (b. 1928) in response to Eva Hesse (b.1936)  ….during another period of doubt and difficulty.  It is timeless.  It remains some of the best advice anyone has ever given an artist in peril, towards overcoming creative block, and likely one of the most shared letters.

Statement

The practice considers contemporary notions of process and materiality. The organic often provides a foundation for objects which appear caught in unstable instants amid imminent transformations. Materials that permit an in-between mouldable state propose an imagined felt encounter, which positively affirms the viewer’s corporeality (Peterson 2007). Formal decisions are therefore made to avoid anthropomorphism but allow the viewer to engage in a bodily manner, birthing a similarly intense sensation of materiality in the viewer analogous to the monotonous construction of the work. This is reinforced by the irregular repetitive processes which stresses a purity of form, material and action, suggesting the possibility for infinite multiplication as in Brancusi’s Endless Column.

Materials were selected for their transformational potential; the work can be deconstructed and remade thus proposing an infinite amount of variations. Transformed through minimal means, the success of the work therefore relies on the charm of the material. The practice reinstates an interrogative relationship with Modernist concepts of truth to materials, form as content and the autonomous art object. The work also initiates dialogues with Post-Minimalist notions of phenomenology where the object educes a bodily reading. Arte Povera’s advocate of pre-linguistic experience through a transformative handling of materials is also of significance.
