I can't tell you how often some work opportunity or something has made use of some of the most obscure or weird shit in my life. I got my first full time job because I was a Trekker, I shit you not. I've used all kinds of art in my portfolio including fan/role playing game art (because that's actually really accessible to normie viewers at this point).
