When I was in middle school, i think 6th grade, a kid came to school with a semiautomatic handgun. He went to our guidance counselor and told her he had a gun under his clothes. He told her he was going to kill some teachers and one of the security officers, but not students. He told her she was the only one who could talk him out of it. She spent hours talking him out of it, eventually he was convinced gave her the gun. We were on lockdown the whole day, and we didnt know why until days after. she saved so many lives, including the kids in a way. I never found out who it was.

I dont think she knows it, but she was one of the biggest influencing for wanting to be a guidance counselor, and this was one of the situations that struck me. That situation was still a harsh reality check however, one that still scares me to think about even now. Will i have what it takes to help a hurting kid like that, who sees the only way out being through violence? Am i willing to throw down my life in front of my students and staff, if it means theres a chance itll save some one anyone?

If i want to advocate and help kids and work in a school system, then that is just one of many horrific situations that may arise in the field. But fear of them will not do any good. Fear is not what helped my middle school counselor reason with that child.
