Map of the principal sign language families of the world!
A few other sign languages that aren’t on this map (which I think are isolates?) are Hawaiian Sign Language, which was only recently recognized as distinct from ASL, and Nicaraguan Sign Language, which is often cited in linguistics courses as evidence of an innate human language ability.
And another language family to overlap with all that red in North America is Plains Indian Sign Languages (PISL).
If you have a Duolingo account, please consider upvoting this request to add Coptic to their language courses.
Coptic is the final stage of the Egyptian language. It is currently endangered, with less than 300 Egyptians speaking it as their native tongue.
It would mean a great deal to indigenous Egyptians in the Coptic community to have our language preserved, and this would be a huge step forward.
If you don’t have a Duolingo account, consider sharing this with those who might. Thank you! <3
hey everyone, during quarantine i’ve been doing a lot of online volunteer work!! if you’re interested in language learning, and want a free resource to learn, i recommend two resources: bored of boredom, and fluency for teens! bored of boredom began as a tutoring organization based towards elementary schoolers, but they now have a high school department, which will begin one on one tutoring and classes for foreign language (and other subjects) meant for teens! i teach an intro to irish class for elementary school, but if anybody is interested i could probably teach at the high school level as well. fluency for teens is a slack group where you can join channels for whatever language you’re learning, and if you don’t see yours you can request to make one. within the slack group, there’s peer tutoring, group classes, and a bunch of other resources, plus a bunch of people you can practice texting with! i actually teach the ASL class for FFT!! i hope some of you guys take a look at these resources, they’re really awesome ngl!! i linked the bored of boredom website, but they also have an instagram (@bored.of.boredom). i also linked the FFT instagram (fluencyforteens). enjoy 😎
High school students providing free group classes and individual tutoring during COVID-19.

i wanted to add more things but it was going to be too long, so if you want me to add anything else tell me and i’ll make another masterpost with it!!

once upon a time young young teenage me used to write fan fiction like my life depended on it, new fics every week and I had no idea there was someone out there printing out my fics and putting them in a box to read when they needed something to cheer them up
anyways fast forward to 20 year old me on my third date with Emily and she mentions offhand that she’s got this box of fic she printed out and saved
it’s a few months later after that and she shows me one of the fics in the box and holy shit that’s my garbage fic from so long ago
anyways my point is life is a fucking trip my dude
i still remember when we found this out. i don’t think either of us stopped yelling for hours
look it’s been eight years and I’m still like LMAO I MARRIED A FAN
This is the cutest thing I’ve ever read in my whole life
anyway I just said “tá sé rien”, so that’s where we’re at right now
This is so funny because for me it’s the opposite. When Irish surpassed my French in fluency, words like prepositions and conjunctions have just been replaced by Irish words only. So I will speak French and always sneak in some AGUS.
oh my french is substantially more fluent than my irish, i did french at school for 7 years whereas i’m teaching myself irish and i’m only a beginner, so that’s why it’s this way around
if i know a word in any language other than english, 80% of the time it is french
Well for me it’s 7 years of French also and 2 years of Irish.
