A corner of Bruceâs mouth turned up into a small smile at the image in front of him: Selina, draped in his jacket that may as well have been a sleeping bag, her hand delicately protruding out of its confines to hold a glass of champagne that was sure to be a few degrees warmer than the weather as she did her best impression of a comfortable person. âTrust me, I wouldnât have handed it over if I thought for a second youâd have an inclination to not return it.â His own grin mirrored hers as he ignored the quip about having a closet more. Maybe three more, but seventy was preposterous. âWhose favorite isnât?â Bruce said, taking a sip of champagne just as Selina reached out to adjust his tie. He looked over the top of her head as she did so, lifting his chin as she ironed out his appearance, though he wasnât thoroughly convinced it needed straightening; he did wish her hand would linger there.
âI do believe I said our.â Bruce clarified, biting off the notion that heâd rather return to the more social seeking crowd inside. She couldnât help bringing them right back around to where theyâd started. Heâd have to go back in at some point, even if it was just to leave â though heâd have preferred to stand where he stood for an immeasurable amount of time. âIf I didnât know you better, Iâd be convinced that you wanted me to leave.â He suspected Selina would have every intention now to tell him just how little he knew about her & he could smile that smile that would force a hairline fracture in that oh-so guarded mask she put on from time to time. Not that he wasnât guilty of pulling that camouflage routine over & over again. â His mouth felt dry (largely from the repetition of it all) & he lifted his glass again, a little less full than it had been the time before or the time before that. Each pour the glass had received had worked in warming the core body temperature of its drinker. Thatâs why, he figured, the weather didnât bother him at all as he adjusted his cuff, twisting the cufflink back to its proper position on the outside of his wrist. The time had passed, Bruce assumed, to tell her that she looked stunning in her dress. Now nearly every inch of it was covered by the woven pattern of his coat & he nearly regretted setting it over her shoulders. Nearly. She somehow managed to look even smaller than she normally did. Her stature, however, had nothing to do with her prowess as a fighter, that much heâd been made aware of over & over again but in that moment he simply felt lucky to be privy to both sides of Selina Kyle. Privileged to know, that she too, had another half.Â
Privilege, privilege, privilege.Â
He had too much of it. He was bursting at the seams with it, with information he hadnât shared with anyone else. Thereâd been so little time & everything to do in the months since Clarkâs untimely death. When was the last time heâd even seen the Cat? Had she been behaving, or had he just not been paying close enough attention? Surely it was the latter. âForgive me if Iâm wrong,â Bruce started âbut itâs been some time since anyoneâs seen your alter ego has it not? Donât tell me youâve retired. Itâs not even my birthday.â
She had rocked the boat, scaring away the gentle normalcy that had ribboned around them for a brief moment. Everything in her was disappointed at this, the fact that they could not seem to maintain regularity like most people were. The only comfort was the mere look of dismay scribbled across Bruceâs features, as he scrambled for a middle ground that would buy them just a little bit time together. His comment was disguised as a joke, a bitter one, but a joke that harbored a nervous truth to it. Selina felt her mouth defensively pulling into a tight lipped smile, as she clutched to his jacket just a little bit harder. The vulnerability was always the most uncomfortable part about affection, the part she could never get right. However, as he always reminded tauntingly, she was full of surprises. She shot him a look, a cross between shut up and I suppose your boyish grin is charming some of the time. âOh, please, Bruce. You know very well that isnât true. Must I stroke your ego this early in the evening? Feeling that sentimental?â she asked, her brows quirking up at the end of the question. The most backhanded way of saying, Iâm not going to leave you, she could possibly conjure with the strength and dignity within herself. It almost physically pained her that heâd understand the code, sift through it and understand her true intent. He was the only one who could. Selina let out a heavy sigh, another cloud escaping her lips as it met the chilled night air. Having emotions was hard fucking work, she wasnât used to it. Silently, in an attempt to satiate himself and herself, she reached out for his much larger hand and held it in her own before stuffing their joined hands in the suit jacket pocket. âFor warmth,â she explained flatly, rolling her eyes before the smug look could seep onto his face. They both knew this was a lie.Â
At the mention of the Catâs disappearance, Selina let out an amused chuckle as she allowed herself to lean against the railing of of the balcony, ignoring the bellowing city under them. âDonât get ahead of yourself there, my friend. Maybe youâre just not as observant as you used to be,â she stated with a lazy shrug, tapping her fingers against the back of his hand within the pocket. âBesides, youâve just had so much on your plate. Who cares if the Bat missed a mostly innocent crime via his favorite feline? Or twenty?â she asked, a mischievous grin spreading across her lips as she tilted her chin up to flash him her pearly teeth.
Truthfully, it might have been the absence of his presence lately that had made her slightly less prickly, or maybe it was something softer, she couldnât place her finger on it... Either way, she felt an impish impulse tugging at her. âWhy?â she inquired curiously, cocking her head to the side as she shot him his own trademark complacent look, eyes half lidded and smile so roguish Kubrick wouldâve been proud of. Her voice dropped to a whisper although they were entirely alone in the winter air, âI think you missed me,â she affirmed, pressing her free hand against the front of his crisp white shirt.Â
