“Uncle Vanni and Cousin Zee aren’t scared of stuff…” he said with a small pout, “Neither are you.” Or at least he didn’t seem like he was. “Okay, that’s good then, Friede’s probably still not ready to fly yet.” he said, letting himself be picked up, and again thinking how big Kal’s arms were, before looking around as they flew out, “Woooooooooow,” he breathed, holding on tightly, eyes wide with wonder, “It’s so pretty!” 

Clark smiled warmly and, true to his word, kept their glide a slow and lazy pace as they drifted across the cityscape. “Everyone is afraid of something. Some people are just really good at hiding those fears so no one can see them.” He explained. “Even me.” He chuckled lightly before gesturing with his free arm in a direction over Giovanni’s home. “Far, far off in the direction is my super secret base.” He said in a playful tone. “I call it the Fortress of Solitutde.”

“Thank you Mr. Kal!” Zach said before scampering off to get ready. He returned with his coat on and held Friede tight as he looked out of the window, gulping a little at the height, “Yup! I’m not scared.” Okay… he was a little scared, “Are umm… Are you hold me Mr. Kal?” he asked, not sure how this was going to work, “Or are you gonna make me fly by myself like Peter Pan does?” 

Clark laughed slightly. “It’s okay to be a little scared. Yes, I’m going to hold on to you tightly -- and Friede too. Wouldn’t it be neat if I could make other people fly?” He said with a grin before hoisting the boy into one sturdy arm. “Alright, here we go. I’ll keep it slow.” He said as he drifted into the air and closed the window behind them before floating into the city sky.

“You’re sounding an awful lot like Bruce, first of all. Superman and Clark are two different people.” Oliver had gotten back some of his fighting spirit after taking time off and it had worked well for him. He realized that his friends and teammates back here weren’t doing so well and it was starting to make him feel like he needed to do a lot more to make sure none of them went off the deep end. 

Oliver pursed his lips. “Maybe you should talk to them more. Might help you feel more like you can…I don’t know, do more.” 

“Whoa, I am not sounding like Bruce! I’m moody, not broody.” He shook his head. “Clark and Kal aren’t the same person... Clark is... human. He’s everything I can’t afford to let Superman be right now. If I had let that identity stick around, I would’ve had to submit to NOVA’s tests and they would’ve found alien DNA in my veins.” Clark explained.

“I’m not like Bruce or you or any of the others with secret identities. I don’t just... put on a costume or mask and become Superman. I put on casual clothes and become Clark. He is my costume, not this.” He shook his head some; tone soft. “I’ve never felt more disconnected from humanity than I have in the past year.” He sighed, but gave a nod at Ollie’s words. “Maybe I should talk to them more.” He said.

Clark grinned. “Of course we can; and don’t you worry – I won’t let a thing happen to you or Friede. We’re friends, after all. So you can always count on me to be there.” He said warmly. “Best get you a coat of some sort though. It’s a little colder up in the sky than on the ground.” He said with a smile.

Zach scrambled to his feet and clapped a few times, “Okay okay okay! I’ll go do that!” he half ran back towards his room before stopping and turning his head back, “Mr. Kal, could you write my Uncle Vanni a note saying we’ve gone flying? I don’t want him to worry while we’re gone.” he asked before zipping back into his room and yanking on his purple coat with a furry hood, it as his favourite colour, and scampered back into the room with Friede tucked under his arm, “I’m ready!” he declared.

Clark laughed and nodded. "I will take care of it." He spoke as he gathered up a sheet of paper and jotted down a quick note. 'Taking my new friend flying. Will keep him safe!' Clark finished up by signing with his shield just as Zach returned. "Alright! You ready?" He asked as he walked towards the window he had entered from.

“Mera.” Clark called out as he drifted through the window and settled himself on the floor. “You wanted to see me?” He asked, looking at her curiously. He hadn’t really had any sort of extended conversation with Mera since he came back to the League those many months back.

Zach knew he needed to keep all that his cousin and uncle taught him a secret, it was a big rule! And if he wanted to be a famous magician when he grew up he needed to follow it now. “Really? I always figured it would be more, exciting!” he said, flinging his arms up a little. Zach’s head tilted back quite far to still look at Clark as he stood but at the man’s words he nearly fell over scrambling to his feet in excitement. “Can we? Can we, can we, can we!?!?” he asked quickly over and over. “Uncle Vanni and Cousin Zee won’t be back for a while so we’d have time!” And he and Kal were friends, he was friends with his Uncle too! So Zach could trust him, “You promise not to drop me or Friede?” he asked, a few nerves eating into his excitement, “Cause if you promise that first, then we can go!”

Shouting; hurt tones in her voice. Kal-El stood there in silence and took it all as Kara laid into him. “I’m not apologizing for it...” He finally spoke when he was able to get a word in and gave her a stern look. “I’m not apologizing for attacking Anton.” He stated. The male shook his head and shifted his stance ever-so-slightly. “Once I caught him in the act, killing those agents, and he told me who he really was -- I don’t regret attacking him, no matter how upset you are with me, Kara Zor-El.” He remarked.

“He’s dangerous and not to be trusted. How can we blindly trust that he’s not going to hurt you or any of our friends? He may say he loves you, but people can say anything.” He said. “We’ve seen our fair share of words without meaning...”

Zach laughed happily and clapped his own success, he’d only managed to get the trick right a handful of times so far so being right was still pretty novel to him. “Haha! I’m not allowed to tell! Uncle Vanni said I’ve gotta always keep tricks a secret he calls it the Magicians Code!” he nodded sagely, unable to hide the thrill of his triumph.

“Mr Kal,” Zach clumsily tried to shuffle the cards a little before continuing, “What’s it like flying?” he asked, putting the cards down and picking his stuffed dove toy up, “I keep wanting Friede to fly but she doesn’t want to yet, I think she’s scared but… It doesn’t look scary.” he blinked up at Clark, eyes wide with wonder.  

Clark gave the kid a playful ‘Darn’ and laughed away the topic. “What’s up?” He listened as he questioned him, keeping his sense sharp for anything that may need his attention. “Flying is... peaceful. Being able to soar in the clouds and see the city lights from high above is great.” The Kryptonian hummed softly. Suddenly, Clark stood up and grinned down at Zach. “Why don’t you just see for yourself? You and Friede.” He remarked, offering a hand. “We can go for a click fly and you can see what it is like for yourself; and maybe Friede won’t be so afraid anymore.” He explained.

“Reeeealy?” Zach asked, blinking a few times, “Woooooooow, but Cousin Zee’s super good at everything!” he said, spreading his arms wide as he said it, “I can’t imagine doing that, but it’s be super cool getting everyone to clap for me on a stage!” he chuckled a little, being just like his Uncle, that was what he wanted. “They’re huge! I think they’re bigger than my Daddy’s head.” Zach laughed, “Is it because you forget you talk about magic? That makes my Mummy and Daddy fight with my Uncle a lot.” he sighed, “They think I can’t hear but I do.”

“Great!” As kids did, he shook he mood off in seconds and favour of shuffling through the cards, tongue sticking out a little as he concentrated, “I thiiiiiiink…. This one! This is your card!” he said triumphantly, holding a card out for Clark to see, “Was I right? I was right, right?”

Clark let the subject slide by as Zach began focusing on the cards before him, determined to pick the right card. Once he had made his decision and held the card up, the Kryptonian let out a small laugh. “Wow, how’d you do that?” He asked with a shake of his head. “How’d you know that was my card?” He questioned him.

Was it really his card? Clark would never tell the truth. It was more important to him that the kid was happy at that moment. The man shifted his position on the floor and gave the kid another friendly smile. It bothered Clark the way Zach spoke about his parents, but there wasn’t much that he could do and in the end, it wasn’t really his place to get involved.

“Do you miss’em a lot?” Zach asked, curling and uncurling his toes as he asked. He nodded many times at Clark’s advice before speaking, “Oh I know! Uncle Vanni told me not to talk to strangers at all. My mommy and daddy have parties with lots of strangers coming over but I just stay upstairs and play until I have to go to bed. Uncle Vanni let’s me stay up later but that’s a secret! So don’t tell anyone else okay?” he asked, smiling wide and showing a few gaps where some baby teeth had fallen out but the new ones hadn’t grown in. “Really? You think I could do real magic!? Wow! Uncle Vanni and Cousin Zee aren’t sure about it, they say that’ll keep watching cause it happens when I get older.” He huffed, older was boring, he wanted it now! “Like you can fly! And you have laser eyes that blast things and you can punch a bad guy and kapow! They get stopped.” he laughed, “Is that why your arms are so big? Cause you kapow people a lot?”

“Okay okay! Now you gotta take the cards from me and put your one back in anywhere you like and shuffle’em! And I’m not gonna look again!” he made sure to slap a hand over his eyes so Kal would know he wasn’t cheating.

Clark laughed softly. “That’s good. Good lad.” He nodded before giving another chuckle. “Yes, I think you’ll be a great magi someday!” He said, “I think you may even someday give your cousin a run for her money.” Clark finished with a grin  He blinked some at Zach’s explanation of his biceps and smiled. “Yeah, I suppose that’s why they’re so big. I have to ‘kapow’ a lot of bad guys. They always want to fight me for some reason.” He said as he tucked his card back into the deck and gingerly shuffled them in his hands.

“Okay, all shuffled.” He said.
