mina hahn. 16. sophomore. culinary track.

“I told you to read the fine print of that housing form.” She laughed and followed behind Mina, sitting beside her once they were at the bleachers. “We’re good. Nothing to complain. No outward flaws just yet in the whole thing.”

    “Outward flaws? Guess I’ll be the first to notice on that front.” She laughed while noting how mildly flippant that was. She pulls out her sunglasses and starts to pull her hair into a ponytail since the wind was nearly blinding her with its force.

    “Sorry --- you know what I mean.”

[mickey-mason]

“Damn, you’re a hard sell,” Mickey grumbled but then brightened up a second later when she saw the food. “Whoa! This stuff looks so good! I don’t even know what I want to eat first!” She placed a hand on her growling stomach and picked up the fork and knife accompanying the veal. Cutting a smaller chunk off, she then cut a bite-sized piece from that and speared it with her fork.

“Remind me to start drinking privately from now on. Apparently I’m a talker when drunk.” She ate the piece of veal and hummed in appreciation as the flavors bounced off her tastebuds. “I wouldn’t even call you a wallflower. More of an observer,” she said while chewing.

    “Well, that’s a compliment from you to me.” The corners of her lips tug upwards as she observes Mickey’s reactions to her dishes, making mental notes on whether she seems to truly savor her food. She found “afterwash surveys” to be too awkward. Mina grins at the compliments but adds, “Oh --- yeah. The baked alaska is for later. I put it on this fancy-ass plate for kicks, but I should probably stick it in the freezer until you’re done.” She gets up to do just that.

    “Yeah, that seems to be more like it. The wallflower thing faded out when I was thirteen. Probably when I got my braces off, and my ovaries started screaming. Now I’m just a tad bolder.”

“Of course I remember, I just choose to continue to ask. It’s part of my roommate duties, it’s in the by-laws.”

    Mina laughed. “Oh --- roommate bylaws. Should’ve known. Gets me every time.” They reached the bleachers by the tennis court, and she promptly sat under the shade. “How are you with him, by the way? I feel compelled to ask because you know. New relationship. Roommate bylaws.”

“Ah! No! That’s not what I meant!” Mickey said with a laugh. “I want my points back!” Her face deflated and she pushed her lips out into a pout. “How in the world have you heard about it? I'm’ not that bad, I don’t think.”

    “Nah, a points system can’t calculate human nature,” she says placidly, completely genuinely, and offers the meal up to her. The food’s presentation? She’s always had an eye for aesthetics.

    “Just, you know --- ‘oh, man, Mickey hyped out after two shots of vodka’ --- things like that. And sometimes I’ve seen it. Not a complete wallflower, you know.” She grins and pulls up a chair across from Mickey, idly drinking from a glass of water that she poured for herself just thirty seconds ago.

“I understand. Anyway, they’re not bad until they meet my friends, and then they turn into absolutely horrors.”

    “I’m just glad that my parents speak Korean. Besides the universally understandable very loud nagging, their linguistic handicap serves me all the more.”

“Oh good.” Lydia cringed. “I was preparing to pretend to like some sort of fish… pastry… thing. But that sounds delicious! I love lemon meringue. Feel free to use my tastebuds at any time.” Poking her tongue out she spoke with some difficulty. “Ith ah yuh dishposhal.”

Smiling, a touch hesitant, Lydia chuckled. “I’m Lydia, I’ve seen you around school. Nice to officially meet you!”

    “That sounds horrific, doesn’t it? But it’s something my parents would like, I’m sure.” They were gladly only a few yards from the kitchen, and it didn’t take long for them to reach the door.

    While looking for her key, she had time to laugh to Lydia’s antic. Will she get ever get used to that?

    “Pleasure to meet you too, Lydia. I’ll add your tastebuds to the ever-growing list of ones at my disposal. You just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

“Fish and pie?” Lydia asked, crinkling her nose. “That sounds like a bit of a strange combination, but you’re the expert here so- wait! Not ready to be homicial?” she squeaked.

[scnsorial]

    “No, like dinner and dessert. Smoked salmon for the main course and lemon meringue to finish off. Always like a new set of taste buds.” She laughs at her temporary companion’s affront, and contemplates an answer.

    “You never know. I’m sure not surprised anymore.

                    I’m Mina, by the way.”

“No? Why would you think that’s a metaphor? I literally mean do not tell my sisters you saw me.”

    “Right, misunderstood what you said. I’ve always felt really good about being an only child.”

“If you tell my sisters you saw me, revenge will be swift and merciless.”

    “Is that a metaphor?” Are you high?

[mickey-mason]

“True, true,” Mickey said, holding up a finger, “but if she ever finds out I‘m letting you know right now I’ll point the finger in your direction.” She sat down in oe of the many empty chairs and rested her elbows on the table. “Ooh, extra boozy. If you want blackmail that’ll be a good time to get it. I’m a bit of a lightweight.”

    “Ah, so you’re gonna tell. Points off for that one.” But she laughs, and turns her back to Mickey so she wouldn’t see the fruits of her preparation. There’s aesthetics involved, of course.

    “Oh, I’ve noticed. Or rather, I’ve heard.”

“Palate as in food? Yes! As long as your food won’t have wasps or benzoyl peroxide in it, I’m good!”

   “There’s a fine line between adventurous and homicidal. I’m not --- ready to be either.” An awkward pause. “Anyway, fish and pie?”

“Maybe I can introduce you to a couple of the boys. You’re looking particularly gorgeous today too!”

    “Thanks, but, uh --- no.” She’s feeling thoroughly patronized. She offers an awkward sort of smile, and furrows her brows. “Do you remember how I always decline those sorts of offers? Usually always from you?”

“Fine. You give some valid reasons. Where are we going? Oh! Can we walk by the tennis courts? I may be taken but I enjoy the view still.”

    “’Course I do. And honestly? I have no idea. We can --- stop at the tennis court. They sure aren’t gonna mind.”
