Horizon was born at the Polaris well to Skyhop and Hornrush. They were doted upon for their first moons of life, by both of their parents as well as their two older sisters, Duskpaw and Dawnpaw. Skyhop and Hornrush were known for being gentle and fair parents, who did their best to give all of their children attention even when Horizon was small, and would be known to spend individual time with their older kits while taking turns watching young Horizon.
When Horizon was about three moons old, Hornrush and Skyhop left their youngest in the care of the monarchs and went out on a patrol with Duskpaw and Dawnpaw, when a sandstorm seemed to kick up out of nowhere. The four cats went missing for almost two full days, and when they came back, there were barely three. Hornrush had been lost out in the storm, and Skyhop had gotten sand in her lungs, leaving the older molly weak and fragile.
The journey to Little Sprout Well was brutal for Skyhop, who was unable to keep up with the rest of the colony without significant support. Duskpaw and Dawnpaw would tag-team taking care of Skyhop and trying to distract Horizon from the sorrows the sandstorm had caused their family, doing their best to keep their younger sibling entertained with stories that Hornrush used to tell when they were younger.
Eventually, Horizon became Horizonpaw, Duskpaw became Duskrose, and Dawnpaw became Dawnhop, all while the colony is at Little Sprout Well. Horizonpaw would choose the path of a tender, while his sisters graduated to become a scout and a tender respectively. The three siblings didn’t understand at first, as they’d never been there before, but Little Sprout Well was considerably drier than it should be, and Nighstar was concerned. They would leave early for Sharp Point Well, which would also be too dry. Skyhop needed to rest after the long journey, her lungs weaker than before with the lack of access to water, but onward the Wayfinders had to move, to find not only water but the prey that follows it.
The journey to Polaris well was the worst Horizon had experienced thus far. An older trainee now, they were able to help Skyhop make the journey, though her body was frail and she often trailed at the back of the pack.
Nightstar, as well as Horizon’s uncle and one of their cousins, would be taken by a wolf. Horizon would find themselves the first new Tender named under the newly named Coyotestar, a moment of hope for the future when everything seemed to be going so wrong.
Polaris was no better, and the moons of sickness finally caught up to Skyhop. She didn’t make it more than a few days more than Oddsong, the dehydration finally being too much for the sand that had piled up in her lungs on that fateful day.
Eventually, the three siblings would make it to the Waterplant, and everything seemed to be going okay. That was, until Duskrose announced that she could take no more of this, and that she was going to go and live somewhere “safer”, whatever that meant. She’d urged Dawnhop and Horizon to go with her, but each sibling refused.
Their family of five now down to two, now Dawnhop and Horizon have themselves and their extended relatives to look to for the family they had lost.
How does Horizonsky feel knowing that their sisters had to take over the role of raising them after the sandstorm resulted in the death of their father and left their mother too sick to take care of herself, let alone them?
