I learned from Buddhism that you canât just go for happy. Especially from upset. Itâs too far of a jump from upset, sad, or angry. And it feels unnatural and inauthentic from that distant polarity. But you can go for peace. You can relax and even just be with what is. Allowing it. Even allowing the struggle, the upset, the sadness, the anger. Meditation is going for peace by simply being with what is. And then from peace, happiness can naturally arise. It can appear. I think that is poignant and instructive. I imagine that during times of uncertainty and chaos (which some would argue is always, but letâs just say that especially during COVID-19) there is a greater urge to establish certainty and feel safe, even if the facts, no matter how you see them, arenât quite providing actual safety or certainty. I imagine thatâs often whatâs happening when people are debating or defending their position. Sure, weâre trying to get the facts and figures and truth straight and establish good sources, etc. But even as that surface conversation is happening, underneath, each one of us has an inner child that is somewhere on the spectrum of feeling safe or scared right now... and thatâs whatâs driving us. And I believe itâs very valuable to remember that when you find yourself hammering away at someone trying to convince them theyâre wrong, in that moment you might basically be yelling at a crying scared child and maybe rethink your tone and strategy for more empathy, even if they are being stupid in your eyes. And equally... realize that if you are that riled up about something, chances are your own inner child is closer to the scared end of the spectrum and needing some relaxation, self-care, or a sandwich⊠or just stepping away from the social media... and the illusion that being right is more important than being kind and compassionate to others... and to yourself. https://www.instagram.com/p/CAhUgnFHMIj/?igshid=p8mw4er8b29v
