South Gray’s Close by Julie Donald

The name here refers to John Gray Burgess; though formerly, the close was occupied by the Grey Friars. It was also known as Mint Close because it housed Scotland’s Royal Mint from 1574 till 1877. The close provided a home to many dignitaries - the eleventh Earl of Buchan, whose son William Erskine (1750-1823) gained prominence as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. Other buildings in the close were owned by the Wedderburns of Gosford, the Earl of Rosslyn, and the Earls of Hyndford and Selkirk.

21st April, 1934. The “Surgeon’s Photo” of the Loch Ness Monster first appeared, but was proven to be a hoax in 1975. 

However, sightings of the Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie” are still reported to this day. The earliest known reporting of the monster dates back to Saint Columba, who reportedly encountered the beast. This report was written in the 7th Century in “Life of St. Columba”.

Memorial to Towser a World record Holder.

Towser lived for almost 24 years in Glenturret Distillery until she died in March 1987. She killed in excess of 28,000 mice, a world record or  28899 to be precise as another source tells me.  This sculpture is on display at the Famous Grouse Experience, Crieff, Perthshire

Apparently this was how many farmers brought their beasts back from market. There used to be a line up outside the Kingsley Hotel in Brodick, Arran on a Wednesday market day in the 70’s. Loads of farmers with their bunnets on in the bar ordering, ” a scatter of halfs… ” and all the Marinas, pickups, the odd Land Rover with trailer and Morris Minors outside with sheep waiting. The Police were absent…

New book reveals a direct link between Robert the Bruce and the Declaration of Independence

Interesting article about Linda MacDonald-Lewis's theory that the Declaration of Independence (1776) was "based on the 14th-century Declaration of Arbroath." Seeing as how this article was published in 2009, it is not exactly new information; however, the link is never mentioned in any discussion of the Declaration of Independence that I ever hear, so it is important to be reminded.

Some highlights from the article:

 "'I found out only recently that George Washington treasured a snuff box that he had been given made from a piece of wood cut from the tree where William Wallace hid from the English at Falkirk.'"

"'A lot of Scots who had to leave Scotland after the failed Jacobite rebellion ended up dying on American battlefields, fighting the same enemy on a different field.'"

"[...]Voltaire, the French defender of civil liberties, said: 'We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilisation.'"

"It is our gracious pleasure to grant for the advancement of the library and fabric of the College of Glasgow the sum of two hundred pounds Sterling." This is signed by Charles I.

Then, almost two decades later, a scribe noted that “this sum was paid by the Lord Protector in the year 1654.”
