The first prominent Zionist thinkers like Theodor Herzl were overwhelmingly European Jews wanting to establish a settler colonial project in the Levant, and many of them were secular or atheist, so they couldn't have believed in the religious claim to the land.

And the mythologized past revolves around a large, united kingdom of Israel ever existing, which the historical record does not support, let alone the unfalsifiable religious claims of a god granting them special right over that land.
