First avantris campaign that I’ve actually finished to the end! Onygosh so heartbreaking. Very few words. Just stunned silence. Can’t wait to start Stardust Rhapsody: Anthem next!

So this isn’t really fandom-based, but this is the result of my boater training and cowboy bebop experience, and so here we are, my redesigned captain as a space pirate.
Since the module talking about the nautical alphabet flags, I immediately had the idea to make a crew based around their designs, names, and meanings. This is R or Romeo, a red flag with a yellow cross, and while it does not have a definitive national meaning, I have read it sometimes signals “do not pass” or a distance off ship.
If there are any boat nerds out there who would like to provide a better definition (cause google is not very helpful), I would gladly welcome some insight!
despite cowboy bebop throwing me for a whirl with the way it ended, a special set of circumstances (including cowboy bebop having faye’s character development being similar to a character development plot i have cooking of my own, and currently completing boater education to get my boating license) has inspired me to experiment with my pirate-esque wip if it was pirates in space.
I learned about the nautical alphabet today and i have been having thoughts.
following a logical order of processes, one may know what led me to watch Cowboy Bebop for the first time in the big ‘26. While I knew nothing going into it, it was immediately very cool (which I believe is an apt description of the experience). The art style is really neat and the whole futuristic space setting and the jazzy soundtrack makes it all feel so dreamlike (and maybe not just for the viewers). Though usually when I see futuristic science-fiction, it doesn’t take the route Cowboy Bebop did, showing us the wonders of futuristic technology while still maintaining the vastness of space, and the inherent emptiness of a lot of the planets and moons. It feels futuristic and old at the same time (which, duh, it’s not modern futuristic but 90s futuristic) and I think it has a really neat feel and atmosphere.
What’s with the ending though?
I’ve perused a bit of the fan forums since starting it, snd a lot of people bring up how the whole point of Cowboy Bebop is to show how the characters run from their past, and in this case, the ending makes sense, as Ed, Faye, and Spike all get to encounter what they left behind.
Ed’s makes the most sense to me in a way, since she’s a kid and got to go back to her father (though her father doesn’t seem like the most reliable authority figure out there but who am I to say).
Faye’s ending also makes a lot of sense, as she is no longer a part of the time and people she once belonged to, and cannot return to a place that no longer exists. In which she returns to the Bebop, which is reasonable because she has built a community there, friends and a line of work, a home. She doesn’t belong there because that’s what she remembers or because it’s the life she was set up to live, but because circumstance brought them together and she chose to stay. (This is very similar to a character arc in one of my wips but that’s besides the point).
I feel like Jet is just left with the brunt of it all, his crew and closest friends leaving him for their pasts when he has long since come to terms with his. While he doesn’t get a chance to talk with Ed and Faye about their plans to leave, I did appreciate how he didn’t push Spike one way or the other when Spike was preparing to chase down Julia and Vicious. Part of me wanted Jet to be a little more pissed, a little less neutral about Spike potentially leaving to die, but from his perspective I guess he believed that Spike at least had to try. I don’t know, for something like this I would have expected more of an argument, since Spike and Jet are pretty much each other’s closest friends.
Which leads to Spike, because what the fuck? After all these years is he really throwing his life away because of a woman he lost many years ago? Actually I can’t really complain about that point because it’s kind of a theme in the show, but going somewhere that pretty much guarantees his death just because she died, after living a life where he seems to be in his element and around people he enjoys just doesn’t feel right. (Also was it all supposed to be a dream? Is none of it even real? Is that what we were supposed to be left questioning? If so, I’m not mildly perturbed). I might understand more if Julia and the Syndicate were bigger parts of the story, if they were clearly Spike’s motivation consistently, but that wasn’t the case. I’m well aware that not every story ends with the protagonists coming out on top, but this… this is not what the show was setting them up for, at least to me.
