When I read their old break up fic? I realized Ryan's a lot more calm. Because he loves Elle? And she's one person he wants to be happy. Like yes, he's mad she couldn't succumb and she couldn't win. But he'd rather look at it as not a loss, but a forfeit because he wasn't equipped to play the game.
She wants him to be happy too - but seeing him with another serious woman hurts her deep.
Except she’s not mad, because how can she be mad. She’s not. It’s been three years and she can safely (MAYBE) say she’s moved on and she wants to be civil with him.
Awkward kisses on the cheek when they run into one another. I feel like they just avoid one another as much as possible. Except she works at the PR firm that does his work so she probably hears his name a lot.
Wants Ryan to like her fiance, too, plz. Ugh, but seriously, even saying that hurt her heart and obviously she’s going to have jealous fits and Ryan has to subdue her and make sure she doesn’t do anything she regrets.

brucas appreciation week
day 2: best fight ~ i love you, brooke. i don’t know how else to say it (3x22)
Their first date was a hockey game. The Washington Capitals against the Boston Bruins - a sure loss in the eyes of every DC native. He bought the beers, she bought the popcorn. He surprised her with a huge foam finger which she laughed at extensively before popping it on her hand and wearing it proud.
It wasn't love at first sight for either of them. But it was a fair game - neither had been in a serious relationship for the past two years and both had been working on themselves before trying to bring someone else into the equation.
He dove himself into his work, getting a promotion and a raise, mending his tarnished relationship with his parents, and being the groomsman at his little brother's wedding.
Elle, on the other hand, let go of things she didn't think were important. She'd never have a relationship with her father, she didn't like her job enough to want to dive into it, and she was an only child. Instead, she did things like take days off to sit in a park and read a classic. One week she spent on the Appalachian trail, hiking with a friend. She tried very hard to get in touch with who she was, what she wanted as a single, individual, and not as a part of something else.
Before the date, her best friend told Elle to keep it cool. Noelle wasn't the most graceful of sports watchers - loud mouth, screaming profanities, banging on the glass between the sport players and the spectators. Let it be known: she really did try. She sat there sipping her beer, raising her foam finger and enjoying the light hearted conversation that was happening between the two of them but then that fucking prick had to go and trip Laich (who happened to be her favorite) and Elle was out of her seat screaming.
"AW you got to be fucking KIDDING me, ref! Fucking open your eyes!"
She stood there, the fire passed and realized she'd fucked it up. Lindsay had been right, she should have kept a calm demeanor. But when she turned to grimace in his direction, he was laughing. The kind of laugh where there was no noise because he was trying not to laugh. A giggle came to her lips and she pushed his shoulder, "you're not laughing at me, are you?"
"Of course I am - but that's alright. It's only cause you're so damn cute."
It'd been three years since she had stood beside him, the camera lights flashing as they posed. He was the handsome politician, she the eye candy that had dimples in her smile and eyes that lit up with every person she conversed with. They were the epitome of happiness in those moments, his lips brushing the hair above her ear as he whispered that she was killing it. She would flash him a grin that displayed her pride. She loved making him proud.
They would go home that evening and she would feel her body tighten the closer to the apartment they got. She knew what she wanted - him to close the door, ravish her and tell her that he was nothing without her. His other half. The woman he loved. What would actually happen is that she would teasingly play his tie, make a joking jab, and he would be into it until his phone beeped indicating her. His other woman - his assistant. Except, Ryan wasn't cheating on Elle with his assistant. He was cheating on her with work. Elle might try to kiss his neck and grab his attention once more that night but he would explain she could have it when he was done looking at the polls. He was trying to get a real name for himself, Noelle.
They would end up breaking up a week later. It was their last event together. She remembered the pictures of him at the next event: another woman next to him. He couldn't do it alone, had to have someone on his side.
She hadn't taken a photo with him since.
it had been four months since he had proposed. she remembered the feeling in her stomach, the way his smile was turned when he dipped down onto his knee and pulled out the ring. she remembered her elation. her fear. her desire. her confusion. she remembered it all - including the no that was whispered so softly, so very lightly in her head that it was unheard over the yes that was shouted from her mouth.
she wanted a loving husband. she wanted kids. she wanted to have a family with someone.
it was the desire to have it all without waiting any longer. she wasn't in her twenties anymore. it was time to grow up and start taking life more seriously.
and she loved him. she really did.
“So I heard it didn’t go well.”
“Yeah, well. It’s nothing but my future law career on the line.”
“If you need me, I’m here.”
“For sex?”
“To talk.”
(blank look.)
“For sex.”
