y'all (if you could) do me a favor and please tag this with your sign and how potent your need to be right about everything is
I said it in the notes on the last post but I’m gonna say it again.
I’m married to someone with severe memory problems. Automation of household appliances & systems helps him a lot and helps me a lot because it reduces the number of things I have to keep in my brain at all times. I love doors that lock themselves, being able to schedule dog food being delivered, a thermostat I can manipulate from wherever. Beyond my little bubble it should be noted that voice controlled appliances can be really good for people with mobility concerns. Appliances that can measure and talk and remember little tasks can be such a blessing for people.
I will never forgive Amazon and Google for taking technologies that could be really helpful and weaponizing them, and fuck everybody who acts like its some kind of conspiracy theory that those devices are spying on you. You absolutely should be distrustful of those devices but just make sure you’re getting angry at the right people.
Making accessibility devices evil is just like so Disney villain
My mom is blind and without her Alexa literally could not cook, go shopping, or do a million other things. Because Alexa is voice-activated, she doesn’t have to fumble with knobs or write a list she can’t read.
I will never forgive Amazon for how much I hate a tool that allows my mother to live her life.
Open source and secure alternatives for some of these:
- Voice activated smart speaker: Mycroft (can be purchased as a complete unit, or DIYed with a Raspberry Pi and microphone+speaker array) https://mycroft.ai/
- Smart Home automation: home-assistant (cannot be purchased, originally developed by MIT) https://www.home-assistant.io/
- Zigbee (the wireless protocol for smart lights and other smart devices) bridge: Conbee II (this takes the place of a Phillips Bridge, for instance. And is in many cases better because it works with all brands of smart light that use Zigbee--which is almost all of them, including the cheap IKEA ones--and also works for devices that aren’t lights. Cannot really be DIYed because Zigbee needs special hardware, not just software) https://phoscon.de/en/conbee2
I don’t know any alternatives for locks, vacuums, thermometers, or anything else sadly. None of these are that difficult to set up with just a little bit of tech know-how, and extensive guides already exist for almost all problems you could run into because the open-source community is almost psychotically dedicated to its projects, unlike Amazon, Google, and Apple where it’s practically impossible to get help with any problem that’s even slightly unusual.
Oh thank you!! These area really neat
the humanity of the AIDS crisis: the ward by gideon mendel
colorized by me
Never forget 🏳️🌈😔
OP you did a beautiful job colourising these shots
Notice how OP says “colorized?”
I want to remind you this was the eighties. THE EIGHTIES. Color cameras existed. Color VIDEO CAMERAS existed.
Someone put these in black and white to make them seem long ago and far away.
OP is returning them to their proper place in history: ONLY TWO GENERATIONS AGO.
that’s not fair to gideon mendel, the photographer who took those photos in 1993. he took them in black-and-white even though color cameras were available, yes, but not to “make them seem long ago and far away”. he was photographing in black-and-white so they would be taken seriously.
mendel is still documenting and lifting up the voices of people who live with hiv/aids in the project “through positive eyes”.
if mendel hadn’t taken these photographs, we wouldn’t have a record of these patients and the ends of their lives at all. it was extremely unusual for aids wards to let photographers in, and the patients took a risk in letting mendel photograph them and their loved ones.
rest in peace, andré, steven, and john.
Hey, so I know it’s unlikely this post will circulate much because I only have a small amount of followers, but I feel that it still needs to be said regardless: in light of the recent news about John Mulaney checking into rehab, please remember that addiction is not a joke, especially when someone is actively in the process of attempting to recover. I’ve noticed that celebrities, in particular, tend to become so recognizable on the internet that people almost act as though they’re not real human beings. Please don’t turn this into jokes or memes or any kind of “content” disregarding that this is a person struggling with a personal issue as much as it is a public figure whose work is widely circulated. As someone who grew up in a family deeply affected by addiction and has personally witnessed the harm that can come to addicts and the people around them as a result of the disease, I just wanted to put this out there. Take into account how the things you’re saying and doing may affect a person’s recovery, as well as the lives of people who are currently struggling with addiction or have in the past.
Love how neurotypicals will be like “there’s not a lot of noise in here you shouldn’t be getting so stressed” when the TV is on, I can hear a phone playing music in the bathroom, A twelve year old is playing on his phone on the couch near me, clicking a pen, and an eight year old is playing with LEGO at the coffee table, all the while I’m listening for the 2 year old who is asleep upstairs
Neurotypicals think the ability to tune out unimportant background noises is the same as it actually being quiet
already seeing plenty of posts on twitter about john mulaney so let’s remind y’all that addiction isn’t “morally wrong,” addicts don’t look or behave in a specific way, and addicts who aren’t rich/famous/white deserve the same amount of respect and access to resources as celebrities who come out about their struggles.
I believe very strongly in “I didn’t say it was good, I said I liked it”
but what might be even more important is “I didn’t say it was bad, I said I hated it”
I just wanna say if you hate something good because it sends terrible messages that’s fine but you can also just hate it because you hate it. free yourself of the struggle to find a “good enough” reason. sometimes it doesn’t hit right.
series you like but would not go within a ten foot radius of a cishet man who liked them
Get rid of "Read" indicators on all messengers ever lol
Its stupid were at a point where people are anxious to just open and read a message without the other person throwing a fit if they arent responded to immediately

Ok but seriously not to be disabled on main but it is so genuinely upsetting and truly fundamentally sickening to only see physically disabled hcs/thoughts come up and only come up in angst prompts/aus like if that’s the only way you see a character be disabled or the only way you understand us living with our disabilities you are a bad person end of go work on it <3
*ok to rb and add on no one clown on this post
He means more to me than you will ever know
I fucking hate this yall are so fucking stupid if websites are legally required to have extremely stringent verification processes in order to host adult content they'll just ban it outright because it's easier and cheaper. And the thing is SISEA doesn't just cover explicit content, it covers "sexually explicit behaviour".
Idk bout y'all, but as a queer person I'm not a huge fan of the US government policing sexual behaviour.
Also, a blanket ban on porn (which could very well be the result of this legislation) will just drive consensual content into the same circle where cp is sold and shared, because, again, very few companies would go through the hassle. Which is the very last thing you want, actually.
Not to mention, most of the people that wind up in sex work are queer or disabled and were driven their because they quite literally ran out of options. "Regular" jobs are discriminatory as shit, you're not "making lazy pervs get a real job", you're taking marginalized peoples last avenue at survival
Exactly!! Criminalizing sex work is just going to make it more dangerous for the people involved in the industry, isn't this exactly what happened when prostitution was criminalized?? It just became less safe for sex workers, not less prevalent!! Sex workers need protection, not destructive regulations!!!
Its also exactly what happened when hard drugs were criminalised, or when alcohol was criminalised, we know exactly what happens when we make bans like this, the behaviour doesn't disappear, it just becomes even more dangerous and unregulated.
