“That-” The king’s cheeks blushed with light ruby red embarrassment. The secret scarlet truth he had held so closely had slipped. The person he had created from dust burning at last, leaking out an honest smoke. Thinking her gentle arms and voice a dream, he had dared to speak to her- tell her things only a younger Yona should have heard. Things no Yona should have seen.  “…It wasn’t anything.” With the short lies as sharp as a knife Soo-won easily cut away his fears. A well practiced wielder of  weaponized denial and dismissal.

“More importantly Kouka has been experiencing a drought recently, normally in the palace it wouldn’t effect you. But I’ve asked those here to try and be conservative with their water usage. That way we can try to transport extra reserves to the other tribes. I apologize for any inconvenience it might cause you.”

“Wow.” She said in response, unable to really reply with anything other than that for the moment. She knew Soo Won was feeling under the weather, but to lie so badly, he really must be out of sorts.

“If you think a diversion like that is going to work on me, you clearly underestimate how much I’ve been through. Look. I will never forgive you for what you’ve done. But I also can’t bring myself to truly hate someone who looks like they’re struggling so much internally. And frankly . . . that’s the worst part. You’re so hard to hate, Soo Won. And it leaves me conflicted. So very conflicted.”

“And that’s why I want you to be honest with me, just this once. So that I can finally make up my mind about you. Are you my enemy . . . or?” 

She was still learning more about her father and while she loved him dearly . . . it’d be naive of her to love him blindly. Perhaps Soo Won could finally shed some light on the whole situation for her.

She felt that despite everything, the one thing he couldn’t lie about was the raw hate he felt toward her father. Hate that must have a catalyst. The only question was what that catalyst was.

“So . . . care to explain to me what that whole episode of yours yesterday was all about?” Yona asked as she engaged in casual conversation with a man she never thought she’d speak casually to again. “When you fell on me, I thought I was gonna be crushed. I’m lucky I’ve gotten tougher over the past year or so.”

She didn’t exactly have any sympathy for him, but she was curious. Especially since he always put up a strong front. If Soo Won, that Soo Won, was showing weakness, then there was likely something big going on behind that constant smile of his.

Zeno smiled at the princess. He understood her concern. This castle brought her both happiness and sorrow. The current emperor was her childhood friend, but he also killed her father, forcing her to flee the castle. The princess was too young to find the right balance.

“Zeno lived too many years and so he could find the right balance. Otherwise, Zeno would have gone crazy for a long time.”

He laughed to smooth the sad truth.

“But don’t worry, Princess! Feeling like you are okay for a young girl now! But Zeno can try to help you. Let’s find for you an interesting activity that will not make you bored or anxious.”

“Thanks, Zeno. I’d really appreciate that. I’ve never been the best at sussing out hobbies for myself. Jobs? Sure. Ambitions? Absolutely. Hobbies? Not a chance. I always get indecisive and then end up doing nothing in the end.”

She scratched the back of her head.

“Then again, I guess you’d be a master of finding things to keep yourself busy after living alone for so many years. So please, lead the way.”

“It’s 5 Am in the morning Knell! Why are you still awake?!”

“This life at the castle is not doing me any favors.” She said to her lifelong friend as she steadied herself on a nearby wall. “I just fell down a flight of stairs because I was so bored that I was daydreaming while walking. My entire body is pain.” 

The poor Princess was starting to go stir crazy in her newly restored life of luxury. It seems that the indoor life was no longer for her.

“Care to go for a walk with me? I just . . . need to get out before I end up falling out of a window or something.”

“Hm. How do I put this?” Yona asked the young man behind the counter. “Is there anyway you could make me two dozen arrows in two weeks? I’ll pay you up front of course. It’s just that my school’s archery club has a tournament coming up and a lot of my arrows are too beat up to make the cut.” 

She had heard stories of this guy’s talents and right now, she had no one else to turn to. Especially since every other shop owner she asked gave her an estimated window of two and a half weeks minimum and that was time she did not have.

I’m so bored. Yona thought to herself as she sat on a chair overlooking the town below. Sure, it was nice to actually have decent shelter for once, but she had grown so used to adventuring that suddenly being cooped up in a castle was the epitome of boredom for her. Which was ironic, considering how much she used to like this kind of lifestyle.

She glanced to the right and noticed a familiar face sitting there, relaxing much like her.

“Takin’ it easy as always, huh Zeno? I really wish I had your ability to go with the flow like that. I’m always too stressed or bored for my own good. It’s either 0 or 100 with me, never anything in between.”

In terms of life itself, I’m more mature. I’ve just been around longer and know how to handle things better than she can. For example, that panic attack she had. I’ve experienced several of those and know how to overcome one without needing to rely on others.

But when it comes to facing hard situations like war and bringing people together, she’s got me beat by a large margin. I can only dream of becoming a beacon of hope to people like she is.

I can relate to her really easily and thus writing her is almost second nature to me. It’s like she’s a great friend who I’ve known my entire life.
