thinkng about . makoto & his understanding of life/death and the journey in between . persona 3 as a whole is about accepting that all things must come to an end; school life , holidays , relationships and eventually life itself . having lost his parents at such a young age, makoto internalized a bastardized interpretation of this ideology ; a middle schooler’s take on what nihilism consists of: there is no meaning in the world , nothing matters and so he shouldn’t be bothered connecting with those around him .

it isn’t until he’s forced to take on these bonds to become strong enough to survive against the ever-increasing in strength shadows that he realises the error in his assumptions . while at first his dialogue suggests that he joined SEES because it was easier to join then to find a reason to refuse , he eventually comes to enjoy his time with the team , staying on & eventually ; taking on the mission to end the dark hour as his own personal mission . He accepted that life did have meaning , and that laid in the bonds he creates . however its only because of his past that he’s so easily able to accept his fate , the consequences of making use of the universe arcana . he already knew all things come to an end , he’d experienced it , internalized it , revised his understanding & came to terms with the fact that , despite his life was coming to an end ; the experiences he had leading up to that moment are what gave life its value .
