I don’t think there’s an applause gif big enough to properly convey my reaction to this. Also, I love that if anyone tries to say that you’re just “another hack fic writer with no ideas of her own who is jealous of the “real” writers out there”, they could quite literally be crushed under your catalog of award-winning original writing as a response. They can’t dismiss your stance on this topic the way they do to so many unpublished / fanfic writers because you’ve already met all of the standards that they insist someone has before they’ll accept their opinion as worth listening to.

Suggestion for the new Little Mermaid movie

Make it clear that Ariel goes to the surface primarily because of her own fascination with humankind, & not primarily because of a crush on Prince Eric. Maybe even make her romance with Eric incidental to her own journey. Instead of her having to find true love's first kiss, you could frame it as her having to find true acceptance on the surface or something. I dunno. Just make one thing clear...

Ariel's journey should not be to find a man; it should be to find herself.

I’m gonna piggyback on this, if that’s all right. More to expand on this perspective rather than to shut it down.

Ariel’s journey in the original was to find herself, but the public perception that she “did it for a man” leeched into the mainstream and dismisses how she really is in the original film.

She made the decisions a sixteen-year-old girl would when faced with a father who did something unquestionably abusive and alienating. She made an emotional decision that was only in part spurred by a compassionate human being who ran into a burning ship to save his dog.

I think the LA film will tweak the romance a bit to appeal to more modern sensibilities, but one of my fears is that they’ll do so by implicitly punishing 1989 Ariel’s choices.

So yes, I hope so, too! But we have to be really careful about honoring Ariel’s imperfect decisions and not punishing her character for it. She made the choices she needed to care for herself when pushed up against a proverbial wall.

Eric’s character ideally exists to be a source of unconditional love and support, or a foil to Triton. Where Triton has to let go of his prejudice, Eric never has to. He already sees Ariel for who she is (not literally in the original given that he’s so attached to the voice) and never talks down to her or belittles her because she cannot speak. Eric is important to the story, but not in the way most casual viewers think he is.

There's a spinoff novel based on this and while the characterization is not quite where it needs to be, basically Ursula just kind of keeps Eric as a melancholy pet while he's perpetually under mild mind control. He's still able to make savage burns, though. Basically Eric retains a small amount of free will at Ursula's discretion but he gets really depressed and salty.
