I hate the general opinion on this site that sheep need shearing and therefore wool products are okay.
Of course sheep need shearing, they’ve been selectively bred for years and years to produce uncomfortable amounts of wool!
Vegans aren’t saying ‘don’t shear sheep’, we’re saying ‘don’t keep hundreds of sheep in subpar conditions for the sole purpose of profiting from their wool’
And even if, hypothetically, these sheep have the best living conditions ever, unless they live in a sanctuary they’re just going to get sent off to slaughter way before the end of their natural lifespan the moment they stop being ‘useful’ (aka the moment they stop making money).
It’s so frustrating that people don’t seem to understand this.
They don’t understand because they don’t want to. If they really wanted to know what the vegan position was they’d find out in 3 minutes of research, they attack this straw man position which no vegan actually holds because it makes them feel better about buying and wearing wool. There is no other reason for there to be such a widespread misrepresentation of our position despite the fact that we’re constantly telling people that this is not at all what we believe.
