Iced Rivalry
Summary : Amber stole your first place with a few points only and comes to you after comp
Words : 1.3k
Tags : Amber Glenn/fem!reader, younger and ice skater reader, are they lovers ? Worse. Reader is described smaller than Amber
An : I first thought about doing Adelia Petrosian reader but decided to make it more neutral for the reader and I was scared to block myself by doing that mmmm also I'm not sure I got the technical terms right so don't hesitate to correct me! Hope I wrote the tension right tho :>
Part 1?
Sitting at the kiss and cry after a performance you knew you had done great was more than exciting; it was thrilling. The lingering adrenaline from it, the happy smile from your coach, the taps on your shoulders, and the encouragement from the crowd. Everything felt surreal, and for a few moments, you were floating, for a few moments, everything felt right. All that practice and training, skipped meals, poor sleep and injuries now worth it.
Until it wasn't anymore.
You had spent the rest of the competition in first place, cheering and encouraging the others without ever imagining they could do better than you. A confidence too close to cockiness, and it caught you faster than you had hoped for, when she sat at the kiss and cry, USA team's jacket on, eyes bright and hopeful.
Amber Glenn did better. Taking your place with only a few more points. And you had been so cocky you hadn't seen it while she was on the ice â more like refused to see it.
You stood slowly, the screams and cheers around you fading as Amber approached, smile too bright, too genuine. You forced a small smile, not even trying to make it look real as your chest tightened. And she saw it, of course she did, but the bitterness of your attitude didn't stop her from hugging you, even complimenting you with words you refused to acknowledge. Words too kind for someone who wasn't even on your team, too personal for someone you barely knew.
Her arms around you made your body warmer, heart tightening in that â unfortunately â familiar way you knew when Amber was around. You found her infuriating, annoyingly too good and close to you at every competition. Both of you were always next to each other on the scoreboard. Your coach had said it was good motivation for you, pushing you to train harder and all those classic speeches, but you really just couldn't care less. You didn't need Amber Glenn to be good, you didn't want her around, always threatening your medals and ranks. You needed gold, not blonde.
You quickly parted, Amber's eyes locking onto yours for a second too long, just as her hands stayed too long on your shoulders.
Infuriating, annoying Amber Glenn, who forced you to look up to hold her gaze.
And there she was, in the first-place seat, in all her glory, covered with a soft blue blanket over her lap: Amber Glenn. She was smiling â something that looked so natural for her, her own version of a resting face seemed to be that soft and kind smile.
The walk back backstage only made you more frustrated. All your thoughts were suddenly too loud and messy as you replayed your performance in your head. Silver isn't badâthat's what your coach told you, and you had almost snapped at her. It wasn't about the medals, not anymore. Only about being better. About taking that smile off Amber's face, making Amber look up â for once â from second place or third on the podium. About shutting down that idea of rivalry between them that let people think Amber was on the same level as you. About â
"Don't make that face, you were really good."
Amber's voice suddenly pulled you back to reality, you had walked past lockers, past crew, and cameras to end up in an empty hallway. Your eyes shot up, glaring at her. Oh, of course, it was bad between skaters to be so competitive, everyone preferred the whole friendly camaraderie idea of figure skating competition, and yes, it was nice and mostly true. But between you and Amber? Only for the cameras.
"No smart comeback?" Amber continued as you didn't answer, taking a few steps closer. "Are you really this upset?" She smiled again, and for a second, you thought about being violent. Then for two more seconds, you stared at her smile, thinking about something you wouldn't admit.
"What do you want now? Don't you have press to do or anything else?" you asked as your eyes shot up to her. "Or did you just want to annoy me more?"
"Hey, it's not my fault if my triples were better than your quads."
Amber was a nice person, really she was. Even if you hated her, it was hard to find something to say against her as a person. She was kind, gentle, respectful, and good with people in general. And maybe, just maybe, you had once seen her interacting with a fan and giving them a pin of her motto and wished you could have one tooâjust maybe.
But the second you two were alone?
Something always shifted in the air, in her attitude, her gaze. Even her voice seemed lower, like a threat. Her answers were sharp, matching the attitude from you that she always caused. It was in the way she smiled at you, cocky and pretentious, in the way she talked to you, bossy, mocking because she had to make you feel as young as you were, silly and inexperiencedâas if you weren't only a few years younger.
Amber always managed to get under your skin.
"It's notâ it wasâ"
"It was the ice?" Amber cut you off, smirking as she took a step closer.
You glared up, Glenn sudden closeness shutting down any attempt at an answer, which made her look even more proud of herself when she saw you close your mouth. You stepped back, gently bumping into the wall as if this whole situation wasn't cliché enough, Amber's eyebrow arching as you swore under your breath.
"You should come back, wouldn't miss the ceremony, would you?"
You sighed, "Wouldn't want you to miss an opportunity to humiliate me."
When you tried to move away, Amber stepped closer, blocking you â nothing brutal, no, Amber was more subtle. "Humiliate you? I love having you with me on the podium, don't you?"
"I hate seeing you in general," you answered sharply as you tried to walk away a second time.
"You love it," she chuckled, stepping back to let you go. "You'd be bored without me, admit it. Maybe you'll get used to second soon."
You had taken only a few steps away when she called your name, and even if you wanted to leave, you stopped. Even when you wanted to be far, you stayed, when you wanted to look away, you stared. And so did Amber.
"You were good, really."
You looked up, your gaze sharp and cold meeting hers, which was too genuine and too kind. Unusual for you.
Her smile faltered at the look you gave her, and she cleared her throat as she leaned against the wall behind her, looking at her feet. The lack of an answer made her feel awkward, no camera to smile at, just you and her, first and second.
"I mean it, you wâ"
"So what?" You cut in coldly, slowly leaning against the wall opposite hers. "I was good, but not good enough."
There was a moment of silence, neither of you looking up at the other, not moving. You thought about leaving, going back to your coach, ignoring her for the rest of the night unless it was for podium pictures.
But she spoke again, and you listened.
"I'm not sorry for winning. I'm sorry you're too hard on yourself to see you did your best and you'll do better next time."
You didn't answer immediately, the distant cheers of the crowd filling the blanks in your conversation.
"Next time I'm first; you just had the judges by your side," you finally answered, not friendly but less sharp.
"Sure, I got lucky," Amber answered with a roll of her eyes, before she looked up and smiled again, soft and small.
"Just luck." you agreed as you turned around to walk away, feeling Amber's gaze on your back at each step you took before turning a corner.
You don't know how, but after the ceremony and the celebration that followed â after you and Amber had exchanged long eye contact from across the room â you found a "believe and breathe" pin in your pocket.
And it was now pinned on the inside of one of the pocket of your bag.
