HEADCANON ▶ WEALTH.

Despite his position as Unova’s eighth Gym Leader, Marlon doesn’t have any real savings and keeps enough cash on him just to get by (plus a ‘rainy day’ emergency fund under his bed.)

Unova pays its League members well, but a good portion of Marlon’s money goes towards traveling between his home region and Alola. Mantine surfing (especially at his pro level) is definitely not a cheap investment either. Additionally, he’s a bit impulsive with his financials, spending recklessly on his Pokemon, his friends, and…just on rad stuff here and there. 

Marlon also doesn’t charge challengers to pay him when they lose in the Humilau Gym, breaking Unova League protocol (again.) For Marlon, the thrill of a good battle is enough payment, but the League higher-ups see it as him ignoring the rules (again.) They really cannot wait to replace him…

Even though Humilau has become more seaside touristy in recent times, Marlon shacks up in the cheapest lodgings on the fishing industry side of town, as he’s usually not home for long. His parents worked hard (fishing and teaching) to raise him comfortably, and Marlon’s never forgotten his roots even after landing his Gym position.

In his opinion, the fancy side of Humilau (and nearby Undella Town) is for the fat cats, not for him. As long as he has access to the sea, his friends and Pokemon, Marlon’s a happy Clamperl. He really doesn’t need much, just excitement.

@wrongtrain sent: Wide silver eyes stared intently at the gym leader as he effortlessly traversed the waves atop the back of the Mantine, the physics of it not really making sense to him as he watched in awe. The moment Marlon stepped back into the beach, Emmet was marching over to him, continually pointing between him and the Pokémon that remained in the water, just asking “How do you do that” in a tone that made the words sound more like a statesmen than a question.

"Whoa! Ahoy there, Cap'n White!" Marlon greets with a jaunty salute, shaking some seawater out of his hair as he emerges from the surf. His trusty Mantine, surfing partner Dina, surfaces and cheerfully chirps out a greeting as well. It takes a good moment for Emmet's question to fully register with the aloof surfer, but when it finally does, Marlon's grin widens and he lets out a big laugh.

"You look like you just saw me get spit out by a Wailord or somethin', dude, but trust me--the righteous art of chopping up a wave is actually real simple!" The Gym Leader throws his arm around Emmet's shoulder with a wink. "Wanna learn how, big guy? I'd be stoked to be your surf sensei, and this water's prime for new rooks! Yeah--let's just go for it, dude! Dina here can find you a backup 'Tine and everything!"

With a clap on the conductor's back, an exuberant Marlon starts to turn back towards the water, steaming ahead with this idea on his own. "Master of riding rails turns into master of riding waves? I dig the sound of that, don't you dude? Uihaa!!"

Marlon is currently busy making underwater faces at the people passing through the Marine Tube. He's gathered quite the crowd of Pokemon and trainers alike.

Sure, his monthly Gym Leader rounding meeting started like, an hour ago, but...well.

He's busy.

Orre--more specifically the arid, stifling climate of Pyrite Town--is definitely not Marlon's ideal cup of Roserade Tea. Where are the palm trees? Where are the refreshing seaside breezes?

Where the heck is the water?

And yet, despite all of these pressing questions, the traveling Gym Leader strides through the unforgiving desert-scape with his usual vigor, wide blue eyes excitedly peeking into dusty street shops and abandoned, shadowy alleyways. Clothed only in a bright swimsuit, sand shoes, and a towel draped over his broad shoulders, Marlon sticks out like a sore thumb as he stumbles around the area...especially amidst Pyrite's atmosphere of heavy machinery and exhaust.

“Goddamn man, watch out!”

The raspy shout is just in time--a stranger's strong pull barely saves Marlon from being pancaked flat on the street by one of Orre's many irresponsible drivers. Breathing heavily with adrenaline, Marlon whirls around to face his savior...and raises both fists in the air, a triumphant ear-to-ear grin on his sweaty face. "Uihaa! That was about to be a messy wipeout...but you just bailed me out in, like, a major way, dude! Wow!" He bounces from heel to heel with excitement before pointing a finger at Saya (and bowing dramatically towards her.) "Clutch. Factor. Sheesh. I owe you big time, Clutch."

"Since you totally just saved my life, I'll give ya the lowdown on me to start! Listen closely, 'k?" Marlon continues with a wink, standing up a bit straighter as he unfurls a crumpled paper map. "I, Humilau's own Marlon Merman, have splashed down here in Phenac City to defend my title and roll all contenders in an interregional swim meet! But, uh..." He pauses, shrugging sheepishly, "...there's like, no water around here, dude. So I feel like I took a wrong turn somewhere--like, something's just off, y'know?"

"Oh, I'll take you up on your deal...!" Waving it with her spunky self. It's better than being in the blazing heat. Elesa stands up, hands taking off headset, followed by discarding her jacket, gently placing them down. inhaling, trying to imagine this as a practice walk, replace walk with swimming.

Kicking off miscolored heels. Will her model outfit be ruined? Maybe, maybe not. This shining leader has dozens. Giving distance, prompting her to run, jumping into sea, allowing her to finally cool off, skin no longer burning, realizing that Marlon is correct - 'Surf feels excellent.'

"Well, I been finally cured of my burn status." Enough puns- too many. Attempting to float onto sea- relaxing for once. So little time, can't do them all.

"Hey Marlon? Do you have any advice on how to... not to be so swamped? with work, and gym leader duties?"

"Uihaa!" Marlon whoops gleefully as Elesa joins him in the water, swimming closer as the model surfaces above the waves with a big grin on his face. "Killer dive, 'Lese...!"

He snorts at his colleague's latest pun (not out of pity, he genuinely thinks they're all hilarious) before floating casually beside her with an attentive ear. Elesa obviously has a lot on her mind right now, and--as dense as Marlon can be--he tries his best to be a good listener.

"Caught in the undertow lately, huh? I feel that in a major way sometimes, dude..." he sighs sympathetically, tilting his head to peer at her. "Hey, you're always doing the modelin' gig and throwing down with challengers 24/7, right? Be real with me, 'Lese--when's the last time you like, really just cut loose and didn't think about any work at all? Like, just vegged out and relaxed?"

"If you can't remember the last time you took time to just chill..." Marlon winks, patting Elesa playfully on the shoulder, "...then that's your issue, dude. Ain't healthy to always be on the grind, right...?"

"Dude...whoa."

Marlon stands slack-jawed in front of his Gym, peering dumbfoundedly at all the angrily-lettered notices plastered across its doors. It seems that the Unova League did not approve of his latest multi-month vacation without notice.

The carefree merman powers through one of the warnings ("Report to League HQ at once!") before folding it into a paper airplane and tossing it over his shoulder with a carefree whistle. Challengers and the League bigwigs can wait--this whole mandatory attendance thing is really bumming him out. Killing his vibe. Leaving him stressed and pressed. It isn't long before he's bounding towards the Humilau surf again. Time for another vacation!

Don't worry. Marlon's totally earned this one...

“Aw come on, ‘Lese! You gonna jump in with me or what, dude?” Marlon teases, his shoulders peeking above the gentle waves as he shoots a jaunty peace sign (and cheeky grin) up at the Nimbasa Gym Leader. “Surf feels excellent today and you’ve been hanging out on the boat for-ever--just send it overboard already! Woohoo!”

“...And if it ends up being too deep, I’ll come rescue ya,” Marlon promises with a wink. “How's that for a deal?”

99% of the time Marlon is a big bubbly ball of Bro Energy, but sometimes he’ll just...shut down to take a truly powerful power nap. Complete with obnoxious snoring and slumping over on whatever/whoever is nearest.

(He happens to take most of these legendary snooze breaks during important League meetings...but that’s just coincidence, I swear!!)
