Sebastian huffed out a chuckle. “I was kidding, Kurt.” He cocked his head. “At least about Scandals.  Come now, let’s go get you some cheesecake or some shit so you can eat your feelings like a proper friend of Blaine’s.” He leaned back against the bathroom door and opened it a crack before looking up at Kurt’s still tentative face. “Oh fine, come on, hug it out.” He waved at Kurt to come towards him.

“Cheesecake is good,” Kurt nodded, wiping the last of the tears off of his cheek as he followed Sebastian towards the door. He let out a small sigh, his arms wrapping around the other boy. Which surprisingly felt kind of nice, just to be held by someone who actually cared that he was so upset. “I can’t believe that of all people, Sebastian Smythe is the one who came to my rescue.”

Kurt simply nodded, not sure what he could really say to Sebastian anymore. He felt like he got out all that he could, “I um… Thank you,” he spoke quietly, his eyes lifting to finally meet Sebastian’s. “But also no thank you. I don’t think Scandals is my kind of this,” Kurt shrugged. “I don’t think there’s any Prince Charmings in the near future for me anyway,” he added.

Kurt let out a small sigh, calming himself down a bit as he looked up towards Sebastian. “He just needs somebody,” he told the other boy knowingly. “Fix myself how? By just… Being without him? Sebastian, I know I was far better at sassing everyone around here than you were, but I was alone. I just, I didn’t realize I needed somebody to be with until Jude came along. It was nice having someone be interested in me,” Kurt shrugged, looking down at the bathroom tiles. “I missed sparring as that guy too,” he joked back, the smallest possible smile on his lips. “You’re not as bad as I thought you were…”

Sebastian was encouraged by the small smile. “Eh, yeah I am just as bad as you thought,” he joked, a smile coming to his face as well. “It’s always in my self -interest. When you and Jude were together it kept him out of Blaine’s hair, but that clearly backfired, since him ruining your life didn’t end up helping him, either. He should get his shit together, and I have to face facts that he’s gonna need Blaine to do that and I have to deal with that. And that leaves you to be more entertaining again - you were boring with him.” He licked his lips as he considered what else Kurt had said.  “Being alone isn’t the worst thing in the world, Hummel. I did it for a long time before I met Blaine and it wasn’t so shabby. Blaine and I could take you to Scandals and we could find some fun for you, you know...until your next Prince Charming comes along”

“I-I know I would end up miserable. I know… I hate that you’re so right about all of this,” Kurt choked out. “I just… I can’t take care of him before I can even take care of myself,” he let out a small sigh, listening to Sebastian’s words with a little bite of his lip. “You’re sure somebody else will be willing to deal with it? To look out for him? He can’t be alone, Sebastian… I can’t leave him alone,” he frowned a bit, absolutely hating the thought of Jude not having someone by his side. “Tell Blaine.. Please tell Blaine to go help his brother,” Kurt requested, almost desperately. “And no. I haven’t talked to my dad about this at all,” he frowned a little bit. “I don’t know what there is to do about it other than just cry about it… There isn’t anything I can do to fix this.”

Sebastian’s heart twisted more as he watched Kurt barely get out his words. He nodded weakly, though words were valiantly reassuring.  “Yeah, I’m definitely gonna sic Blaine on him.  He won’t alone, I promise.”  He took a deep breath and considered Kurt’s final statement.  His brow furrowed.  “Of course there’s stuff you can do to fix this...you can fix yourself.  You can’t fix him, but you can get back up and find your old self again...the sassy guy who I used to annoy me, before I just felt sorry for you?” he said, groping for anything to say that might cheer up Kurt even just a little.

“I kind of miss sparring with that guy,” he joked weakly.

Kurt hated it when Sebastian was right. But everything that the other boy was saying seemed to be exact. “I don’t want a guy like that, no,” he shook  his head, letting out a shaky breath. “But I do love him… I just wish he wasn’t like that,” he frowned a bit. “But what if nobody else does deal with him, Sebastian?” Kurt asked, clearly still worried about Jude’s well being, he knew that the Anderson boy couldn’t get any better if he was completely alone. “I don’t want to be the one who has to do everything… I can’t right now. I’m still trying to look out for myself here, I’m not ready to be 100% taking care of a drug addict… I know that. I always knew that. I always knew this was more than I could handle, I just, I thought I could get through it and I can’t”

Sebastian raised his eyebrows and tried to look into Kurt’s eyes.  “That’s not a character flaw, not being able to get through it.  If you did you’d probably...” he paused to try to think how to put it.  “...end up miserable and end up resenting him or something for it.  You are doing the right thing, looking out for yourself. He just doesn’t get that because he’s so wrapped up in who own damn self.” Sebastian paused again, trying to remember what else Kurt had said - the visual in front of him was so distracting.  “Someone else will deal with him - Blaine, if no one else, and I’ll keep an eye on Blaine to make sure he doesn’t let Jude suck everything out of him, either.  We’ll make sure he gets a therapist or whatever, just like with Charlie. Jude needs people yes, but he was making you the only person to deal with all of his shit, it looks like too much for one person.  And who’s been taking care of you?  Certainly not Charlie, have you talked to your dad about all this?”  

Advice of Gwen’s about Charlie rang in his ears suddenly and Sebastian shut his mouth.  It struck him that Kurt probably just needed someone to listen, not analyze everything and drive the conversation.

“Maybe… I don’t know,” Kurt let out a sigh. “It just isn’t fair… That he can say how much he loves me and needs me and then out of nowhere just say it’s my fault he’s ending it all after all I ever did was take care of him,” he frowned a bit, looking down at the floor to avoid meeting Sebastian’s eyes. “I don’t want this…”

Sebastian's brow furrowed. "You really want to stay with a guy who lied to you and doesn’t appreciate you?  You can do better, Kurt.  There’s nothing logical about a drug addict’s brain. He’s saying you aren’t enough but nothing anyone else can do will ever be enough.”  Sebastian licked his lips with disgust, “It’s gonna suck for awhile, but seriously, this for the best right now. There’s only so much you should take on anyway, how much have you done for yourself since you started with him?  Let someone else deal with him, at least for awhile.”  Sebastian began to wonder how his life might change if Blaine was allowed back in Jude’s life, but he pushed his thoughts away to try to focus on Kurt - he was just so sad looking, it reminded Sebastian of Harvey at his lowest moments.

Kurt mumbled a “thank you” to Sebastian, taking the handkerchief from the other boy’s hand to wipe away what was left of the tears. “I just.. Thought I was helping. I thought he was okay and that we were okay, and that us being together was good for him,” he tried explaining. “I just wish he at least knew how much I care, or how much Blaine cares… Someone. He shouldn’t be alone, Sebastian.”

“You were helping,” Sebastian shrugged.  “But you couldn’t save him Kurt, any more than Blaine can. He has to save himself, as cliche as that sounds.  And maybe now that he has pushed you away he’ll let Blaine in.”  Sebastian was not sure he liked the idea, but he knew Blaine would.

“You knew he would?” Kurt asked, frowning a little bit, just feeling really stupid for not ever thinking that Jude would be able to be the one to end their relationship like that. “I know he is, and I know what he does I just… I thought he was better. I thought he was done with the drugs and that he was going to be okay,” Kurt tried to explain, letting out a shaky breath, starting desperately to try and calm himself down. “He thinks I just ran out and left him.. He thinks I didn’t care and that I just left,” he wiped at his reddened eyes.

Sebastian’s eyes widened and his brows lifted at the last statement.  “Well that’s just bullshit - you and Blaine constantly showed him how much you cared.”  He moved instinctively closer to Kurt and and pulled a handkerchief of Blaine’s that he remembered was in his pocket.  He handed it over.  “He was on some hard shit, it’s not uncommon to slip off the wagon and there’s no telling how long it takes for any one person to really quit so you really are better off without him.  He’s got to get his shit together so he can even think of someone else besides himself, let alone imagine what it would be like for you to handle learning that he lied to you about using.”

What? Sebastian runs into Kurt in the boys bathroom the day after the Kude break-up

Kurt bit his lip some, shaking his head. “You don’t have to go,” he told the other boy, actually kind of hoping that Sebastian would stay. Kurt didn’t like being alone so much after having been used to always having Jude wanting to be with him. “I um… I just didn’t think he would dump me just like that. I didn’t think he ever would… Especially not that way,” he frowned a bit, clearly upset about it all. “It just isn’t fair… I didn’t abandon him.”

Sebastian stopped and leaned against the door frame, shoving his phone in his pocket and crossing his arms.  “Well I coulda told you that he would probably dump you....” he paused and looked guilty because he realized how it sounded.  “Not because of you, just he’s so fucking unstable he just makes up shit in his head about how everything is everyone else’s fault. He did it to Blaine, I figured it was just a matter of time before he got around to doing it to you.” He took a deep breath and added, “When did he say you abandoned him?”

Where? McKinley boys’ bathroom

What? Sebastian runs into Kurt in the boys bathroom the day after the Kude break-up

Kurt was in the boy’s bathroom halfway through his third period French class, a teary eyes mess after having all of second period without Jude to think about how much he missed having Jude. He of course knew he wasn’t going to be able to stay with the other boy after the overdose, he wasn’t strong enough to support himself and Jude if Jude was relapsing. But for some reason the break up stung so much more than expected, and hearing Jude be the one to end it killed him even more, because he knew his boyfriend had doubted him. Kurt was using some paper towels to dry his tears, frowning a little as he hurried to make it look like he was totally fine when he heard someone coming into the room, glancing back to look at whoever it was. “Oh… Sebastian. I thought you were away…”

Sebastian’s eyes widened  at the sight of Kurt, who had clearly been crying.  Ugh.  “Oh hey...” he said, looking uncomfortable as he felt his chest tighten.  “Sorry I can leave if you want to be alone...” he reached behind him to push on the door but something about the sad sight of Kurt brought back the anger he felt towards Jude when he had read the Kude breakup on Tumblr and he paused when he was halfway turned.  “You’re better off without him, you know. That was shitty, what he said to you on Tumblr.”

Sebastian sauntered down the hall during third period smiling as he texted Blaine something naughty, armed with a bathroom pass even though he had no need to use the facilities.  He looked up soberly and quickly however, when he heard and then saw Coach Beiste turn into the hall, causing him to  duck into the closest restroom quickly.
