People tend to forget in the long game Shane is a closeted man living in fear of being found out by the public trying to live up to the unreachable perfect image he set for himself but you aint ready for that conversation // posted on all socials

Thought I’d share a comment made on The Puck Crew podcast. On the best day of Shane’s life [getting drafted] almost immediately the owner is bringing up his race, talking about how thrilled he is that Shane is Asian. You have to wonder if a part of Shane is thinking, “Is this why I was drafted? Is it not for hockey? Is it all PR? Would I not be good enough otherwise?”
Which explains why he’s dissociating in that scene—because his Asian heritage makes him uncomfortable.
In the book, we were able to read about his internalized homophobia, but in the show we get to see another layer of how Shane sees himself [his race].
To the NHL, he’s an asset.
To the media, he’s a story.
To his mother, he’s an inspiration.
To Rose, he’s a survivor.
But to Ilya, he’s just beautiful. He’s just Shane.
Mentally sobbing after listening to The-Shelf-Aware-Podcast because “we didn’t even kiss” in episode 2 hits so much harder when you remember that the first time they have sex, Ilya never stops touching Shane. He’s constantly aware of him—watching for discomfort when he first enters him, checking in, because after pursuing Shane for years he finally gets to have him. He kisses him deeply, with so much passion with every thrust. Even when they switch positions, Ilya stays impossibly close, kissing Shane’s shoulder and thrusting slow, and fucking loses it later because it’s never felt this good with anybody else, and it honestly drives me insane because it hurts even more is when we get to the Vegas scene watching how distant Ilya is. He barely touches him, just staring with so much anger, want, and hunger. And later, when they finally fuck, it’s rough and relentless, like he’s trying to pound the love he has for Shane out of himself, wishing he didn’t want this (love) forever. And now we all have to die because they didn’t even kiss.
