✨ THE WONDERFUL SPARKS ✨ > Every evening, the Eiffel Tower is adorned with its golden covering and sparkles for 5 minutes every hour on the hour, while its beacon shines over Paris. Unveiled on the 31st December 1985, invented by Pierre Bideau, an electrician and lighting engineer, it consists of 336 projectors equipped with high-pressure, yellow-orange sodium lamps.

This form of illumination, which has been met with unanimous, worldwide success, was the starting point of a nocturnal revival of monuments, in Paris as well as in the cities of France and the world.The beams of light, directed from the bottom towards the top, illuminate the Eiffel Tower from the inside of its structure.

Since 1958, by replacing the 1,290 working projectors that illuminated the Tower from the outside, they have been highlighting the fine metallic structure of the monument and illuminating the areas used by late-night visitors until the closing of the Tower to the public. 👹 THE ORIGINS OF THE GARGOYLES > By definition, a gargoyle is a carved or sculpted mythical figure, usually designed with a spout of some sort that carries water away from the building, just like drainpipes do on modern houses. How far the water spurts from the building depends entirely on how far the gargoyle projects out. The term comes from the French, gargouille, which means throat or gullet. This makes sense considering that water usually comes from a gargoyle’s mouth.

There is also a French legend from the Rouen area in which a creature called la Gargouille looked like a dragon, with a long neck, bat-like wings, and the ability to breathe fire.

There are various versions of the legend, but essentially St. Romanus conquers the Gargouille with his crucifix, and brings it back to Rouen to be burned, except that its head and neck, having been tempered by its own fire, remain intact, and are then mounted on the walls of the new church to keep away evil spirits.

Gargoyles and other mythical creatures also represented and illustrated evil in the medieval Catholic Church.

The Gothic idea of a damned afterlife is one of pain and suffering, and the gargoyles can be said to represent the demons outside versus the sanctity and safety of the church inside !

💠 THE COLORFUL DOME ✨ > The flagship Galeries Lafayette store was unveiled in all its glory at its inauguration in October 1912. The owner of the store, Théophile Bader, dreamed of creating a “luxury bazaar” where the sheer abundance and luxury of the merchandise on offer would wow the crowds! Golden light, filtered through the domed roof, would flood the grand hall and set the products aglow. The gamble had paid off. The dome, rising to a height of 43 mètres, soon became the iconic symbol of Galeries Lafayette. Master glass-maker Jacques Gruber was responsible for designing the Neo-byzantine style stained glass windows.

🛠 THE GREAT TOWER ✨ > The Tour Saint-Jacques stands alone in the middle of a little garden of the same name. A tower in the flamboyant Gothic style, built between 1509 and 1523, the Tour Saint-Jacques is the only remaining vestige of the Eglise Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie destroyed in 1797. This sanctuary was the meeting point on the Via Toronensis (or Tours route) of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela (Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle). The statue of Blaise Pascal, at the base of the tower, is a reminder that it was here that he repeated his barometric experiments carried out in Puy-de-Dôme. On the north-west corner, a statue of Saint Jacques le Majeur dominates the platform on which a small meteorological station was established in 1891. It belongs to the Observatoire de Montsouris. The sculpted symbols of the four evangelists (the lion, bull, eagle and man), appear on the corners. These statues were restored during the last century, along with the gargoyles and the 18 statues of saints that decorate the walls of the tower.
