Secrets Within our Stars By: H.E. Smith Chapter one- The Excruciating Beginning There’s a moment in time where one begins to falter in life. My time happened to be now, during the most chaotic time in a humans life, where adolescence meets High School. Yes, I’m sure you’re probably thinking “hell yes!,” or, maybe even along the lines of “Pft, nah, couldn’t be better!” Those of you who were more along the lines of the second thought, stop lying to yourselves, cause you’re not fooling anyone with that load of shit. High School is a trying time for everyone in one way or another. My name is Corraline Meeks and I’m a junior at Fallen Angel High School. Yeah I know, what an unique name for a school. Except it’s just a normal old school, in a normal no action town called Teton. It’s some dingy little town just outside of Georgia. Everyone knows everyone -well except for me- and all the gossip and scandals going on in town. You see I just moved here from Seattle, Washington. My mom and dad just had a nasty divorce, in which I had the honor of being dragged into the middle of. I, consequently, ended up moving in with my mom, because my good for nothing father didn’t want me. But that’s fine with me, I guess, I just didn’t want to move clear across the country. Can you imagine moving to a new school the beginning of your junior year? It’s tough. I had to leave behind my best friend in the whole universe- Taylor kammack. She and I have never been separated until now. I was just starting to unpack my stuff out of the boxes when I heard a knock on my- new might I add- bedroom door. “Hey sweetheart!” My mom said. It’s what she usually calls me when she feels sorry about something she did or when someone in the family died. I’m guessing this time it is for making me move all the way out here. “Hi mom.” I say as causally as I could muster up. “I thought we could order pizza or something tonight, since we haven’t got groceries or anything really unpacked yet.” “Yeah, sure, sounds good.” I replied curtly as she walked out of my room. I start school on Monday and today is Saturday. I don’t even know my way around town yet so I decided to drive around and acquaint myself with it. I didn’t have my car here yet, it’d be delivered tomorrow hopefully, so I borrowed moms car.
In town there was only one grocery store, which was a run down looking Wal-Mart. Also there were two gas stations, a 7-Eleven and a BP. There were also little outlets aligned alongside one of the streets. The school was only ten minutes away from a bistro kind of diner called Sallies. When I came to the school it was two stories, which I thought was peculiar because this was a small town with only a population of 7,000. Late that night I found myself eating - my favorite- mushroom, black olive, Bell and banana pepper pizza. I was going to text Taylor but it was late and decided to go against it. So after dinner instead I went upstairs to take a shower and go to bed. That night I had this strange dream. I could see into the past and future. I’ve never had a dream as vivid as this one was.
“I’m running from something I don’t know what or who exactly. I kept getting scratched in the face while running, by low hanging tree branches. I think I’m in the woods, but where in the woods and which? I glimpsed back and caught sight of, of a man, no not a man a teenage boy. He had these piercing green eyes, the color of emeralds. ‘Corraline, please, let me explain!’ Said the mysterious boy. I could sense a hint of worry in his voice. I stopped mid step and turned to face him. He started walking towards me. While he walked towards me I took steps back until I was trapped against a tree with no where else to run. He looked into my eyes, no my soul. I broke our eye contact and glanced towards the ground. After a couple of minutes he lifted my chin up and caressed my cheek. I closed my eyes and leaned into his touch. There was this mysterious connection between us. I opened my eyes to see him gracefully smiling in amusement. Next thing I knew he was leaning in about to kiss me…” Right then I awoke to sunlight bursting in through my bedroom window. Man, that was a strange dream. I swore I could feel the mist from the woods on my skin still lingering like dew on a flower after a rainy night. I sat up and threw my legs over the edge of my bed. A rush of air met my chest and I knew instantly that my black spaghetti strap tank top was drenched. I was hoping not in sweat, but in the end I decided to go take a shower and get out of my soaked clothes. As I walked to the bathroom I heard my mom waking up. I scurried quickly to the bathroom and locked the door behind me. “That was close.” I whispered quietly to myself as my back was pressed against the door. I didn’t want mom to see me like this, all drenched strangely, in water.
I didn’t one-hundred percent know what I was drenched in, but I concluded for a fact it wasn’t blood, nor sweat. I stood there shivering for about another minute before I peeled myself out of my clothes. I was walking by the medicine cabinet with the grungy mirror on it, when I noticed them. The scratches from my dream. I began hyperventilating immediately, I couldn’t explain this at all. None of my other dreams had done this before. Yeah, whatever happened in my dreams usually came true that day or within the next couple days, but never this! Then it struck me, how am I going to hide or explain this to my mom? Some of the scratches I could cover up with foundation but not most of them, especially the ones on my arms and neck. I turned the shower on and quickly got in. While I was bathing I must’ve of touched one of the scratches, because I was somewhere else. I must be somewhere in the past or future. Hmm… interesting. “ I was standing in what looked like early 1800s style clothing. I stood in a beautiful blue satin dress with lace trim, a corset built in and my hair was up in a very intricate hair do. It was me, but it wasn’t quite. ‘Wow talk about reincarnation! I can’t believe that’s me, it couldn’t be! It must be a great great great grand something like that. Yea… Yea it must be…’ Just then I began hurriedly walking down a dark alleyway. So I followed my past self or whoever this was. She came to a halt near a dilapidated old bar or some sort and knocked a beat on a door. I stayed as close as I could without being seen. Hmm, could I actually be seen in one of these things? I guess I could find out. I followed in pursuit as quietly as I could. The place I entered smelled putrid as if mildew or something got a hold of it. I fought terribly hard from puking up last night’s dinner. Finally, I came to a stop. There was a cracked door open and I could faintly hear voices from within. As silently as I could I snuck in. 'Hey, you there!’ A burly and greasy older man called out. He was obviously talking to me. 'Who? Me?’ I asked. Well I guess they can see me after all. 'Yes you, you insolent girl. Who else would I be yelling at!?’ It was then that the disheveled man charged at me like a bull.” Right then I was pulled out of the vision. The water had long since went cold. I was shivering wildly and collapsed in the shower. I smelled an aroma of cleanliness. The only scent a hospital could give off. Oh God! What happened? Where am I? I tried to move my arms but I was motionless, forced down by some invisible entity I could not conceal. I heard the light humming of the monitors behind me. My eyes and whole body ached. Man I’m really starting to hate these visions or whatever they are.
Give me your feedback would be grateful for it no matter how honest.
