Travelers Guide to the mysterious islands of Lake Titicaca, Peru

 Lake Titicaca is an experience not to be missed when you travel in Peru. Sitting high in the Altiplano to Peru and Bolivia, is the legendary birthplace of the Inca empire and its beauty does not disappoint. While the most convenient place to take in all that Lake Titicaca has to offer is the city of Puno, is the real magic to be had to take a boat trip to the islands in the lake. At the end of the dock in Puno, one can find the offices of a couple of different boat companies that offer different deals to travel to the islands. Although it is possible to take a day trip to island hop, to really get a feel for the different cultures of the islands, it is better to take a two-day trip and spend the night with a host family in one of the islands. The most popular and comfortable of the islands, floating islands of Uros, only a half hour boat ride away from Puno, and notable for the fact that they are built entirely on the totora reeds growing in the lake. The islands are populated by the Uros people who live in houses made of totora and travel with canoes totora. Even if it is worth the quick trip to know how your feet squish when you walk, it has some of the islands which tourists can visit a bit of a Disney feel, which means that you only have access to parts of the island that is filled with tourist shops. This does, however, Uros people continue with their lives without having tourism completely wipe out their traditions. A three-hour boat ride away is the island Amantani, such as Quechua people live. The island may be only a small number of tourists every day, and host families to accommodate guests who wish to stay. Like most others, is very dry and sculpted by stone terraces that act as the walls and walkways that criss-cross and wind along the island. Most houses are made of Adobe and do not rely on electricity. The lack of cars and electrical buzz is a refreshing, which is joined by incredible views of the turquoise blue Lake Titicaca.
