I found an old blog I used to write on when I was a teen, and the year after David Bowie died, I wrote a little piece in tribute in which I'd said something like โthere's comfort in the fact that even though Bowie was a fixture of my time on earth and it's amazing that we were alive at the same time, I never knew him, physically. And so the fact that he was never alive to me in that way means that he can never die to me, his essense is etched in every record groove he has influenced, every interview, every one of his bold life philosophies I incorporate into my own life. David Bowie will live forever.โ
I'm slightly paraphrasing and am a slightly more practiced music writer now, but I'd forgotten that, 9 years on, and I'm glad to be reminded of it. Glad to be reminded of what the mindset was 10 years ago for me because I was so right. Going back to this.
It just hit me that exactly 10 years ago I was hurrying home from work to watch the Blackstar video again trying to make some sense of it, and by home I meant that crappy appartment I knew I wouldn't be able to afford for too long but I lived on my own, and I had a canary, and I was barely on medication and as painfully clueless of what I would learn two days after as of everything yet to come.
