Come down to Feedtime on the Cumberland tomorrow, starting at 6:00! The kickoff event for this year’s Seedtime Festival will be hosted by the Letcher County Farmer’s Market in the Veteran’s Memorial Parking lot. Tickets are on sale for $10 at Appalshop, in downtown restaurants, and at Annie’s Frugal Finery. See you there!
Special Events at Seedtime
At Seedtime, you can come for the music and stay for the special events! On Friday, we’ll have documentary screenings from the Appalachian Media Institute, theater performances, and two galleries: “Tools of Culture Historical Instrument Gallery,” and “Warm Guns at the Gun Sew.” All of that is in addition to the music you’ve been hearing about all week on WMMT!
Nathan Polly is a 68-year-old musician from Letcher County who has spent more than half his life working on the railroad. Every one of those thirty-seven years is reflected in his music, which he uses to sing about simpler times, the railroad, the coal mines, and gigging around with a string band.
Jimmy and Ada McCown are from Pikeville, Kentucky – an area renowned for its traditional music. Jimmy plays the six-string banjo and fiddle, and Ada has been playing guitar since 1970. Their music has been heard around the country and in the Grand Ole Opry. Jimmy was close musical friends with the late Paul David Smith and Snake Chapman and plays many of their tunes. All of that tradition and heritage is coming to Whitesburg this weekend!
Kentucky Wild Horse is all about the bluegrass tradition. Their name comes from a 19th century fiddler, their instruments are antique, their playing style is full of instrumentals and harmonies, and they keep old-time fiddling at the center of their music. John Harrod, their award-winning fiddler, guitarist, and vocalist has been performing traditional music for more than four decades.
The Right Fork Ramblers are a new band performing in this year's #SeedtimeFestival. Each of the members--Jeff, John, Marcus, and Anthony--are experienced musicians and vocalists who have played in bands like the Kody Norris Show, the Dale Kennedy Orchestra, and the Bluegrass Messengers. We can't wait for them to come to main stage!
The Local Honeys are among the many amazing acts we have lined up for next weekend's #SeedtimeFestival! The two musicians, Montana Hobbs and Linda Jean Stokely, were born and raised right here in Kentucky, and were also first women to graduate with degrees in Traditional Music from Morehead State University. Save the date! Appalshop’s Seedtime on the Cumberland is coming and will feature a performance by Dom Flemons on Saturday, June 6th, at 9 PM. Known as the “American Songster,” he pulls from traditions of old-time folk music to create new sounds. Having performed music professionally since 2005, he has played live for over one million people just within the past three years. A co-founder of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, he has played at a variety of festivals spanning from the Newport Folk Festival to Bonnaroo, in addition to renowned venues such as the Grand Ole Opry.
This year, Seedtime is very excited to announce the performance of Bonnie Prince Billy, as part of the round robin tribute to Alan Lomax on Friday, June 5th, at 6 PM. His music features an eclectic combination of traditional Appalachian, fold, punk, country, root and indie rock elements, the combination of which produce a haunting, candid sound. Mark your calendars!
Kevin Howard, a native of Letcher County, Kentucky, has a diverse repertoire and has worked closely with Appalshop in the past. In fact, his debut album will be released later this year by Appalshop’s own label, June Appal. Come see him perform in Seedtime’s round robin tribute to Alan Lomax on Friday, June 5th at 6PM, and as a soloist on Saturday, June 6th, at 3 PM.
Lee Sexton, the legendary “Mr. Seedtime” himself, will perform on Saturday, June 6th, at 12 PM, as well as part of the round robin tribute to the music of Alan Lomax on Friday, June 5th. Revered as one of the best traditional musicians of our time, he has helped to define the Seedtime Festival. Don't miss him!
Seedtime is excited to have the Empty Bottle Strong Band return to perform this year on Friday, June 5th at 9 PM. Though originally formed to play a one-time stint at a local farmers market, over the past three years they have become one of the region’s favorite old time bands. Specializing in toe-tapping dancing music they’re sure to heighten the spirits of all listeners, so mark your calendars!
