This blog is for posts with common themes or past inspirations for my current oc project. My art acc is @seeingwithonesownart, I'll reblog any oc art here (w/ character tag instead of regular tag rules).
I don't use tags to differentiate groups but all of the posts I have here can be sorted into at least one of the following groups. This whole project is still a big wip so groups may be added, removed or altered at any point.
[groups and tagging system under cut]
Structure Groupings:
House - Undefined. Includes homes, places of worship and devotion, miscellaneous empty buildings and uncanny architecture.
Flesh - Organic matter, tissue and mutation; the commonality between the house and its host. Includes skin, blood, bones, muscle, bodily organs and meat.
Rot - Things that live off of decay and dead matter; can potentially cause illness or death. Includes spores, mould, mycorrhizal networks, overgrowth and infection.
Static - Mechanical and electrical devices used for broadcasting, communication, recording and storage (analog and digital). Includes computers, monitors, cameras and radio, as well as symbols and code.
Tagging System:
I use the structure/setting tags for everything to highlight different objects and built structures in posts. A setting will be labelled n/a if the post uses multiple images or is a text post without a specific location.
A source tag will be used if the media referenced in the post is media that I am familiar with and/or inspired by.
The archive tag is for saving posts that contain imagery that is very specific to the project.
If you have a question about any of the groups (not an expert in this genre but I have a lot of thoughts), other oc stuff or just say hi, my ask box is open though it may take a *while* to respond.

Art fight is over but I'll keep this here until the next one :3
the internet is an inherently haunted place if you think about it like. it's so weird to see long abandoned discussion boards stuck in a snapshot of the past, old conversations between kids from over a decade ago who have now grown into their own lives, obituaries taking the form of half finished profiles. and the silence that fills the gaps between. there's a constant ghostly record of each generation's thoughts, fads, their sense of humour. back when the future was at their fingertips. even stranger, people you used to know exist openly in that space, and they watch you watching them. if you want, deceased musicians can play through your headphones. there's always an underlying sense of reminiscing and time escaping our ever shortening attention spans. what a fuckin graveyard
Hanahaki disease is a psychosomatic illness. It's a thing that your body does in response to stress over constantly repressing/concealing your feelings in settings with high background magic. It's like you've been ignoring pain for a long time and suddenly your vision starts going dark, because your affected body is just YANKING on random alerts trying to get you to PAY ATTENTION there is a PROBLEM. Yes the flowers do really exist. So do non-magical psychosomatic symptoms. The flowers aren't special.
This does of course open up the trope to options for non-romantic concealed feelings. Which I think is great. There is something viscerally satisfying about the person who seems so outwardly chipper coughing and hacking and spitting up Depression Flowers so now everyone has to know they're hurting. Isn't there?
Hanahaki but it’s your body desperately needing you to love and care for it while your mind is trapped in the body that doesn’t fit, that’s wrong as it destroys you from the inside out the longer you aren’t able to get help to make your body feel like you
Fear of the woods versus fear of the house. Fear of the house in the woods. Fear of the woods in the house. Laura running through the woods at night. Laura trapped in her house.
Shelly cannot leave the house because Leo is out there. She drove him out there. He is in the woods, trapping her in the house he built around her. He hurts her, abducts her, inside the house. At night.
If Audrey had escaped One-Eyed Jack's without being caught, how would she have gotten away? The boats are owned by the people she fears. Through the woods, at night. Audrey is caught and bound to the bower of her bed. The house, at night.
Be afraid of strangers. Don't walk alone. To be alone, outside, at night, a girl, is to be begging for trouble. The most danger you could put yourself in. Come home. Stay home. It's safe at home. There's something out there. There's a darkness in these woods. The house in the woods. The house.
One of the most important themes in Female Gothic fiction is the freedom granted to women, as Moers states “[Women] can scuttle miles along castle corridors, descend into dungeons, and explore secret chambers without a chaperone, because the Gothic castle, however ruined, is an indoor and therefore freely female space”.
