I'm technically descended from that one (possibly) Hokkien guy who migrated to Thailand, but I know next to nothing about Chinese culture. I don't speak the language, nor have I ever been to China.
I'm just one of the grandchildren of a Thai woman who clung to her 1/4 Chinese heritage like a lifeline.
I almost never talk about my heritage offline. I'm not ashamed of my mixed ancestry; I'm just not usually in the mood to discuss it in any further depth than "I'm Thai on my mom's side and German on my dad's side." Even talking about my grandma's Chinese ancestry feels like oversharing to me. How much information is too much information?
Besides, I'm not as familiar with the white side of my family as I am with the Asian side. (As a matter of fact, my white relatives are estranged from me).
