One Month Follow Up
Okay sorry I havenāt really checked in but my headaches cleared up in about a week and nothing really else since then. Today I went to my one month follow up appointment and everything went really well and it also didnāt take very long. They took some blood and some urine and the nurse practitioner came in to talk to me and I found out that she was actually going to be moving away so I wasnāt going to see her again, which made me really sad because I really liked her and I was comfortable with her but hopefully Iāll like the next one that I get. I wonāt be going back until October though.
Ā There is nothing to really say, they said all of my blood work looked good and my kidney function was fine, though I guess theyāll have to compare with the blood that they took today but she said she wasnāt worried. She did recommend that I get a hepatitis B shot so when I go for my next HPV vaccine then Iāll get them to do it then.
Ā Iām not sure how the refill thing is going to work out or what. I wish I had thought to ask while I was there but if I havenāt heard anything by the time Iāve got like week left then Iāll call them and see whatās up.
Ā Nothing really else to report.
Sick of Being Sick
Not gonna lie, itās actually been a really rough couple of days. Iāve been having awful headaches that feel like someoneās taking a jackhammer to my skull, been battling bouts of nausea, been switching from hot to cold almost instantly, and Iāve been running a slight fever and feeling like weak, like I can barely support my own body.
Ā Silly me, I thought I was going to be one of the lucky people who didnāt have any side effects from Truvada⦠I thought very, very wrong. I just kinda want to lay down and die. I have been going to bed like super early, which isnāt like me, I just wanna sleep but I have to work so that I can make money but fuck⦠this isnāt fun and I hope that these fucking side effects let up soon.
Ā Okay, Iām gonna take some Tylenol and chill out.
All The Same
Nothing new to report. Three doses of Truvada down and Iām still having headaches and the tiniest bit of nausea but I havenāt had any diarrhea or anything like that, thankfully and Iām hopeful that I wonāt get it in the coming days. I am still worried about my appointment on the 18th, but I am gonna keep worrying about that until itās done and over with. Two weeks from Wednesday and they will let me know if I can continue taking this, and I hope so badly that I can. Will keep updated if anything new arises.
Getting My Pills
I got a prescription assistance card in the mail today, which I didnāt actually realize that I was going to need so thankfully I got the mail before going to go and get my Truvada. All right so I picked up my pills later that night, I had my roommate take me and since the pharmacy was 24 hours it wasnāt a problem, he stayed in the car at my insistence.
I go into the pharmacy and wait about five minutes before someone comes to help me. Then I tell them Iām there to pick up a prescription that had to be shipped from another pharmacy and they immediately find the box but they have to call the manager back because the box itself is addressed to the pharmacy and no one has thought to open it. Am I panicking? Yes. Do I want to say screw it and make a break for it? Also yes, but I didnāt. I stuck it out and Iām waiting probably another five minutes before they finally open it and it has my name on it so I just signature and they let me take it but they didnāt ask for my insurance card or check the medication or anything like that. It was in a big plain gray bag with a sticker on it that said for the patient to open only, so they had no idea what was in my package or what kind of medicine I was getting but I was able to walk right out of there.
So I get home and I eat some food, because I was told eating before taking it is helpful and I really expected for it to like fuck my stomach up and give me hella diarrhea and make me want to die but I was okay for about an hour before I just got super tired and passed out. I wasnāt able to sleep very long, but the next morning when I woke up I did have a slight headache. So yeah, Iām feeling a little off but nothing too major. However, I have only taken the first dose so I guess weāll see more later how Iām doing on it. I will keep updated.
Got The Call!!!!
Okay, the pharmacy finally called me! Iāve been anxious since I went to the clinic a week ago and finally they called me to go over the medication and tell me how it works and what the possible side effects could be and all of that fun stuff. The pharmacy they have it at is a bit of a drive so they are going to mail it to my local one and I will be able to pick it up tomorrow.
I am so freaking relieved, I needed this so badly and I am so ready to start taking it and finally be able to relax and not worry so much and just enjoy my partner, and Iām sure my partner will feel better knowing that Iām protected as well. I canāt wait to go and pick it up tomorrow. Iāll keep updated on side effects and things that I experience.
Remember to take your meds today! Also, know your status! #Deadpool #HIV #medication #PReP #selfcare #truvada
Still Waiting
Okay so itās now Tuesday. Last Wednesday was when I went to my appointment at the clinic to see about starting on PrEP, so tomorrow it will have been a week. The next day I got a call from the pharmacy letting me know that they had sent my prescription assistance application off to wherever the hell they sent it and told me it takes about three business days to get it approved. So today would technically be the third business day however Iām not holding my breath about them calling today, but man oh man do I wish they would, but Iām sure theyāll call by probably Friday.
Ā I want so badly for this to stop hanging over me and to start taking this medication. Once I have it in my system itāll be great, I can chill out, I can relax more with my partner. Well, actually Iāll still have to go back in a month after Iāve started taking the pills to make sure they are working for me, so I guess my worry isnāt ending anytime soon.
Ā Okay this is a short post but I really donāt have anything to say other than Iām stressing out. Thank you for reading!
My Appointment and the Next Day
Okay, I know everybody is dying to know- how was your first Uber ride? Well Iāll tell yaā, it was completely anti-climactic. I mean I expected to get murdered or something in the car, but that totally didnāt happen. He talked probably a little more than I would have liked but he was nice and friendly and not scary at all, he did ask me what I was doing today (personal much? Ha ha) and I told him that I was having lunch with a friend at work. Read through to the end to find out how my Lyft driver who took me home was (spoiler alert, it was fine).
Ā All right, so I got to the clinic a few minutes before my scheduled appointment time and I was greeted very nicely by the staff. They were very helpful and immediately got to me, like I had no wait time at all. I got through the paperwork, really there wasnāt even that much, some yes but not a ton. It was mainly me just reading, signature, and writing the date. So I got that filled out and brought it back up to the front and then was handed it back because there were two lines I had forgotten to sign, signed them and sat down. Waited five minutes tops before I was brought back into a room by the same person who had checked me in.
Ā Then the man who checked me in sat me down in a chair and started giving me information on Truvada, had me sign some more papers, and he pricked my finger for a rapid HIV test, which came back negative (unsurprisingly as Iāve never had sex, but I was still nervous about it for whatever reason). Then he started to explain to me all of the people that I was going to meet with next (people make me nervous, so I was pretty antsy). He laughed when I asked him āAre they mean?ā and he told me a little bit about everyone there and assured me that no one was going to be mean to me- he was right!
Ā So he left and the next person who came in was I believe the director of the clinic and he had to get some more information from me to get the prescription assistance program and tell me about how I can go about getting it for free and had me sign some more papers. He asked me about my HIV positive partner and let me know that he could give me some resources to help my partner get the treatment that is very needed at a possibly lower cost. Funnily enough I had read some reviews on this clinic that I went to and one person had left a very negative review on this person in particular (which made me nervous to meet with him) but he was as nice and as helpful as everyone else there.
Ā Okay so he goes away and less than five minutes later and a woman came in to get my vitals, height, weight, blood pressure (which was a little high unfortunately), temperature, and she also drew a few vials of blood from me to run tests, I know one of them was a more in depth HIV test but I donāt know if the rest of the blood was for other STDās or what.
Ā Last, but certainly not least, a woman comes in to talk to me a little bit more and get my medical history, ask me about my sexual history, what medications that Iām taking, all of that fun stuff. I would say I probably spent the most amount of time with her talking about the medication and also told me to take calcium supplements to offset any bone density loss from Truvada. She did a quick exam where she checked my lymph nodes and eyes and checked my back and chest for a rash and answered some more questions and told me even more about the drug and its effectiveness and that I was doing the smart thing by getting on this medication to protect myself. She also took a swab of my throat and then told me how to do the rectal swab myself and sent me to the bathroom so I could pee in a cup and swab my rectum (which for a tiny little Q tip it was still uncomfortable).
Ā After that she walked me to the front and the guy who did my rapid HIV test set me up for a follow up appointment in a month so that they could check me out and make sure that the medication is working well for me and that there isnāt any problems, then after that I will only need to go once every three months for an HIV test. The rapid HIV test guy did ask me before I left if anyone had been mean to me and let me know that was the first time anyone had ever asked him that, we shared a laugh.
Ā I took Lyft home just because I wanted to try the both of them out and the car was quite a bit nicer and cleaner than the Uber drivers, however I did end up paying a bit more for the ride. The Lyft driver was way less chatty, which I was completely and totally okay with.
Ā Now I wasnāt immediately given a prescription for it. They have to send the application for the prescription assistance over to the local pharmacy and today (the day after my appointment) the pharmacy did call me to confirm that they had sent in my application and that I should hear back in about three business days. Today is a Thursday so I wonāt expect to really head anything until Wednesday or so of next week, but I will make another post when Iāve got something else to say.
Ā All in all, I think I stressed way too much about this whole thing. Iāve got some killer anxiety, and somehow these people at the clinic all made me feel at home and I really canāt thank them enough for all that they did for me and how patient and kind they all were. Also it really didnāt take too long, I was there by 1:30 PM and home before 4 PM. Now Iām not so anxious about coming back in the future or riding in an Uber or Lyft for that matter.
The Morning Before My Appointment
Iām scared. I mean I am really scared and you know what I do when Iām scared about something that I have to do? I go online and I research the hell out of it. I find every single last news and blog article, watch YouTube videos, firsthand accounts, interviews, the whole nine yards. But see thatās not doing me any good right now because apparently no one has shared their experience with what Iām afraid of on the internet. Let me start by saying that I am a female in my early 20s.
So I decided that Iām going to write out my experience and post it so maybe someone else who is in my position can read it and maybe itāll put their minds at ease. God I hope so, because I could really use something like this myself. Is this blog going to be great and perfect and all of that noise? Absolutely not. Iāve never blogged before, Iām not a professional writer so expect typos, grammatical errors, possibly incorrect information from time to time, and a curse word or two thrown in for good measure. But I really hope I can help whoever is reading this.
Today I am going to get Truvada for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). If you donāt know what Truvada is itās a drug that is used to treat HIV but itās also a drug that is supposed to help the HIV negative population remain HIV negative. I am an HIV negative partner in a serodiscordant relationship (one partner is negative for HIV and the other is positive) and the very moment I found out that my partner had HIV, long before we were ever romantically involved, I busted my ass doing all of this research about how the virus is transmitted, how to avoid getting it, all of that.
My partner and I have yet to have sex and while I donāt think we will be doing it anytime soon (and if we did we would absolutely use condoms!) I canāt help but want to be completely and totally prepared and not worried when the time comes that we do actually take that step, I want to be protected and I am absolutely sure that my partner wants the same for me.
No one, not even my partner, knows that I am going to get this medicine today. I am doing this literally all by myself, well me and my Uber driver (also scared of taking an Uber, Iāve never done that before either!) because while I can drive I hate doing it and I am already nervous enough. Why havenāt I told anyone my plan? Glad you asked, because if I told anyone than I would have to reveal my partnerās status and that just doesnāt seem like an okay thing to do. Why havenāt I told my partner? Several reasons, one being that in case I canāt get it prescribed to me for whatever reason that they arenāt getting their hopes up like I am for nothing. Until I know I can get it and stay on it I wonāt tell my partner.
Thatās another thing, I am completely terrified that I wonāt be able to get this medication. That for whatever reason they wonāt prescribe it to me or that I wonāt be able to pay for it (no insurance and I donāt make very much money at all!). I searched high and low on the internet and couldnāt find that much information on people who couldnāt take it, so I am hopeful that means that most people can⦠I am very overweight, and Iām worried that maybe I missed something online that says overweight people canāt take it. Also, what kind of examination are they going to have to do? Will I have to get naked? I know itās silly to be nervous about that, I mean itās a doctor itās their job to look at naked people but I am so body conscious that itās driving me crazy. I am unbelievably anxious and I have a million other ridiculous thoughts flowing through my head right now.
Maybe Iām worrying for nothing, I probably am, but I donāt know. What I do know is that I just got out of the shower and itās 9 AM and my appointment isnāt until 1:30 PM and I just wish I could get this done and over with. And also I really need to pee.
