In the first glance it looks like a Shin piece mixed with Dali. But on further glance you can see that this artist, king, has a human figure, male, without a face but with words scrolled across “I WILL BE OKAY”. The man is faceless showing that he has no identity, but the man is place which looks to be the middle of the ocean which indicates being lost, with what little we know of this artist it could indicate the king was lost or felt loss of his identity that or he is and actor. The phrase ‘ I WILL BE OKAY’ is and uplifting and encouraging phrase but it’s all jumbled and the ‘OKAY’ is blurred this may indicated not so much and encouragement but rather dismay. It seems as if it was originally an encouragement but everything fell apart as if the artist lost all hope. As if he, King, was not okay.
The artist use of muted colors such as blue green red purple and orange, with one small band on the jaw line that is bright blue, but the background is dark, because the subject is placed in the middle of the ocean, the use of dark muted colors show that the subject is in the middle of a storm. But the sky horizon is red with purple clouds
, which seems like it’s on fire. Does this storm show that the artist was fighting some social anxiety or mental illness or was it his lost identity? Or is the use of red to show some hidden passion a dark passion that is awakened in the artist that not many know of him, that is kept a secret even to him. The subject is painted in abstract colors which could mean that the artist wants to show that people are different that there really isn’t a norm to humanity. The small bright color may show what little hope the artist has in life, with himself, or with others in his life.
The title of the piece, affirm., seems like the artist, King, didn’t know what to write so he smacked the keyboard, maybe the King is lost. The title seems really far off from what the piece is shown to be like. The title almost doesn’t match. This painting is a dark encouragement. The artist used a lot of symbolism that indicates a tortured young mind. So with the off the wall title it works with a unique piece that has encouragement on first glance but the longer you look the more broken it seems.
This painting Is L’appel du vide. The French phrase which means the call of the void.
