I just want to make a quick note about this before people get too silly about the situation. It's very important to remember that Robbie is Native American, and is putting a lot of work into making sure that Kattigan has indigenous cultural touchstones as part of his characterization. And that is the appropriate lens through which we should view his missing and murdered wife and daughter, I think.

I would be reluctant to use fridging in this exact context, because this isn't some imaginary scenario to generate manpain for a white hero, this is a much more common experience of Native American and First Nation people, having their wives and daughters and sisters (in particular, but not exclusively) go missing. And never getting answers, never learning what happened, and not being believed that there's a problem in the first place.

This is like how being rescued from a tower by a prince is not particularly empowering or affirming to cis physically able straight thin perisex white women and girls, but can be for basically anybody else. Particularly black girls and women, who do not get a lot of cultural messages that treat them as people who are so valuable and precious, who may not have the strength to save themselves, or may wish that they didn't fucking have to save themselves (and everyone else) all the time.

White men have this story so often happen that we have a trope name specific to one specific and particularly egregious version of this, but you don't often see men who look like Robbie dealing with this type of story in fictional settings, even though it happens for men like Robbie in real life with horrifying frequency.

Sometimes stories that are old can be new again in different hands, from different point of views, so just... mind how you step here.

Mr. Siren is back again from the void! Been mulling over what to do with this scene @seizethemage-main and I RPed between our characters, Kieran and Via after what happened to him in Fire and Ice. One of the things I love so much about Neve is that while she is sarcastic, cynical, and deeply pragmatic, she isn't actually pessimistic or mean-spirited. You can see it in the first couple hours of the game—she approves if Rook supports Varric's attempt to talk down Solas and disapproves if they don't. She approves if Rook spares the mayor of D'Meta's Crossing and disapproves if they leave him to his fate, and it's a principled thing; she talks with Harding about it later and points out that there were too many variables at play to make a snap decision to end a man's life.

She asks beggars and informants in Dock Town if they have a place to stay for the night or if they need anything. If Rook takes her on the quest to deal with the lovers in Treviso and then helps them escape, she hopes for a happy ending for the person leaving the Venatori, and she's pleased if the Shadow Dragons are able to help people break out of it. Every time they encounter a murder victim from Minrathous she mentions she'll find their families and give them closure, even for a Warden who died at Weisshaupt. Even at the very end, if she wasn't taken at Tearstone, she'll mention to Rook that she found the wisps who have been annoying her all game huddled under her desk in fear, and she tried to give them some of their favorite objects to calm them down. It's no wonder a romanced Lucanis can say she restored much of his faith in people; for someone who's seen everything a corrupt society like Tevinter is capable of, she still has an incredibly kind heart.

Deadly Reminders - An RRAU Story

Aka Aurelia’s perspective of Fire and Ice

Aurelia Bullthorne is forever haunted by the day her squad died, and the events surrounding Weisshaupt did nothing except further inflame her fears of seeing those she loves perish because of her. However, when the time comes to take down the dragon which tried to ruin Treviso, she doesn’t expect just how chaotic it becomes, or the fact that she has to once again face reminders of her regrets, especially when she must do so to protect the younger Wardens she has slowly begun to care for.

Aurelia usually never felt this tense.

Maybe it was the way the boardwalk seemed to sag underneath the several boots weighing it down; or maybe it was the warning feeling of dread that sank to the pits of her soul, the one she’d felt right before Weisshaupt.

And all the remaining Wardens remembered how that went.

However, a small piece of hope appeared to flicker in the eyes of all the Wardens pressed together, as they listened intently to the Senior Warden’s commands. Aurelia couldn’t help but wonder how long it would take for the battle to snuff it all out. After all, luck hadn’t been present beside the Warden’s at Weisshaupt, so why would it suddenly emerge here?

Rubbing her thumb along the leather of her sword’s hilt, Aurelia does tear her gaze away from the Senior Warden briefly, letting it land on the younger Warden bouncing on the balls of her feet beside her. Anticipation buzzed in the air around the elf, whom Aurelia recalled meeting shortly during the vacation from-Maker that was so long ago. Fisara…yes, Fisara was her name.

“You good?”

Aurelia doesn’t realize the soft, yet raspy, whisper belongs to her before she sees large, brown eyes lift up to meet hers. And now it was too late to reel her words back in. Fuck.

“I-yeah, I’m fine,” Fisara responds meekly, a weak attempt at a smile only further exacerbating the worry which proudly wore itself on her expression. “Uh, thanks though.”

The elder Warden merely nods, turning her attention back to the Senior Warden, who was still blathering on about positions and strategy. Yet Aurelia feels her gut twist. She didn’t want to see a repeat of the carnage that had painted Weisshaupt in long lasting blood, not when such young Wardens were involved.

So she would just have to fight to protect them all, no matter the cost.

It didn’t take long for things to go to shit. The disgusting tentacled monster called Ghilan’nain brought her darkspawn pets and another fucking dragon, leaving the Wardens and the others who’d joined them to have to deal with a new level of chaos as Rook fought the dragons.

Maker was Aurelia glad she didn’t have to face those assholes.

No, instead her sword was now tearing through darkspawn with ease, quickly leaving her covered in their revolting ichor. But she was used to the feeling of it staining her armor, sinking all the way down until she could feel its warmth against her sweat-slicked skin. Aurelia also knew who she became as soon as she stepped onto a battlefield; a killing machine who had been built with precision and the utmost care to carry out the orders given to her.

It was all she was good for now.

As she rips her sword out of a hurlock’s sternum, a resounding BOOM shakes the ground, and she glances over to her right to see a plume of dark gray smoke billowing upwards, along with several darkspawn corpses raining down from the sky. Aurelia then catches a glimpse of a younger elven boy whooping triumphantly, before someone hurriedly drags him away before more darkspawn can come for him.

However, she can’t have her attention stray for too long, as more darkspawn clamber to fill the places of the ones she’s been cutting down, one after one after one. This was simple, mindless. She’d done this countless times before. Yet with every claw that comes too close to ripping her face, or her abdomen, or even her arms, her heart hammers against her chest, her hands shake just a little too much. Even with her mind blank, her body still remembered what it had experienced during Weisshaupt.

An arrow comes flying over her, hitting the darkspawn in front of her right between its beady red eyes. Aurelia turns her gaze behind her, and sees a Warden perched higher up with someone else, perhaps a Crow. He flashes her a small smile, before he’s quickly notching another arrow to snipe down another darkspawn. Something in her softens at the gesture, though the feeling goes unnoticed once she delves right back into the fray.

Somewhere outside her peripheral, a dragon roars.

It felt like hours had crept by, with every second spent dodging claws and spilling blood onto the earth. Everything in Aurelia’s body burned and ached, her bones protesting every time she struck down those vile creatures. But those feelings were like flies buzzing in her ear; annoying, yet easily ignored. 

Then her eyes catch on a younger Warden up ahead. 

She wields a dagger while a flaming orb flies around her, and fire erupts along the edge of her blade as she knocks back several darkspawn at once. Her movements are frenzied, tired, yet she doesn’t seem to be slowing down anyway.

Not even for the hurlock thundering towards her from behind.

Time seems to slow for Aurelia. The elf’s fiery red hair was nearly identical to one of the girl’s on her squad, the same one who faced a tragic end in that damn blighted village. She’d been so young and cheery, taken far before she should have been, and it was her death, among others, which still weighed on her already heavy heart.

She can’t let this happen again.

Without thinking, Aurelia sprints across the battlefield, adrenaline pushing her forward until she’s suddenly crashing against the younger Warden, tackling her to the ground just as the hurlock swings its great axe through the air that only seconds before had been occupied. Her breath is heavy as she then swings her sword upwards, tearing up from its abdomen to its chest cavity. Black blood sprays, but Aurelia barely feels it. All that means is that the bastard is dead.

Wordlessly she helps the girl back onto her feet, before turning to head back into battle, but not before a voice calls-

“Wait!”

Aurelia pauses, then whips around to face the Warden. “I can’t stay long, kid.”

“I-just wanted to say thank you,” the girl forces out through shaky breaths. “You saved me.”

“It’s nothing, kid.” She doesn’t mention how she looks so much like a girl she knew once, or really just reminds her of all the kids that had been placed under her care. Kids who are dead now because of her. “Just next time be observant, okay…?”

“Lynarra,” the younger Warden offers, nodding.

“Okay then…Lynarra, be safe.” Aurelia grimaces, a strange part of her not wanting to leave Lynarra’s side so quickly. But it was better this way. So with a brusque nod of her head, the elder Warden disappears once more into the horde.

It’s easy for her to get into the rhythm of slaying darkspawn, just as easy as it had been to go out into the arena and fight her opponents until they were bruised, bloodied, or dead. The yelling and roars were all just background noise to her, as she focused on the enemies in front of her, all of whom were waiting to bring her down. 

Yet even with her fast reflexes, she’s too slow to prevent the agonizing pain that starts to suddenly scorch through her right arm. Damn it, my blind spot. Spinning around, she now faces the darkspawn responsible, whose razor sharp claws are currently dripping with her blood. Anger abruptly flashes in her nerves, and she lets out a furious yell before cutting down the darkspawn with just a couple of swings of her sword. 

Blood trails down the cut in her arms, mixing along with the blight. She can’t do anything except try and find a healer’s tent-

Aurelia barely blocks a hurlock’s attempt at chopping her in half. Then a group of smaller darkspawn rush towards her, claws outstretched and eyes gleaming with an insatiable hunger. Suddenly she was surrounded by a horde far larger than she’d encountered so far, and for the first time since the battle started, a bone chilling fear slowly crept through every fiber of her being at the sight.

“Warden Aurelia! Watch out!”

“There’s too many-AAGH!”

“Please, help me…”

“Get out of my head,” she growls underneath her breath, brandishing her bloodied sword in front of her. Yet both of her arms were shaking profusely, as well as her legs, all while her head was starting to swim too. No, no, no, no…

And then she was there again, in that blasted village. Blight tendrils reaching towards the heavens while corpses decorated the ground, their innards brutally torn out by blighted claws. She was cornered alongside her squad, paralyzed as strange darkspawn advanced closer, and closer, until finally-

“Watch out!”

Heat soon followed the warning, caressing Aurelia’s face as a tall, qunari woman suddenly landed in front of her. She wore the familiar Warden armor, yet her greatsword was alight with vibrant flames. Flames which now danced merrily as they slowly incinerated the screeching bodies of several darkspawn at once.

The qunari then turned to meet Aurelia’s stunned expression. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” she can’t help but hiss, until she sees a remaining darkspawn beginning to run towards the woman. Swiftly she rushes forward and manages to take it down, though not without letting out a groan at her cut feeling like it was tearing even further. 

While the other gives Aurelia a grateful smile, it’s soon eclipsed by a surprising amount of concern. “You sure? Your arm…”

“Just a cut, it’s fine.” Her voice is gravelly as it drags along her tongue. The qunari frowns, the scarring crossing her face wrinkling with the motion.

“Let me at least help you to a healer’s tent-”

A hurlock rudely cuts her off, but the qunari uses her flaming sword to deal with the interruption. Aurelia knew it would objectively be a good idea to have someone with her, now that she was injured. Still didn’t mean she had to like it.

“Whatever,” she finally huffs, already focusing on the darkspawn still trying to approach. “Let’s just get this done.”

The qunari didn't respond, leaving the two to fight back to back as darkspawn continued to throw themselves at the Wardens. Aurelia, however, could feel her strength draining along with her blood, and her steps grew sluggish, her swings turning far too sloppy for her liking. 

She doesn’t feel herself falling until strong hands grab her shoulders to pull her back up. Maker she was stronger than this…

“Okay, yeah, we’re going to the healers now,” the other Warden says, letting Aurelia’s body sag against her. “Just keep your eyes open, alright?”

Aurelia merely mumbles inchorently. Energy was a commodity now, and she didn’t want to waste it on talking. So she lets herself get dragged along, watching as the qunari carved them a path with her greatsword. Her mind, however bogged down by pain it was, still races with hatred at herself for being so weak, so incapable of fighting through what was really just going to be another scar.

This was why she continued to fail, and why she couldn’t rely on others. After all, they shouldn’t have to deal with her many weaknesses.

Stupid Aurelia, how far you’ve fallen.

Those words repeated in her mind all the way to the healer’s tent, even as the qunari introduced herself as Nova to the healers and left her in their care, even as she was subjected to the frigid feeling of healing magic, and even as she sat on her cot while the healers dealt with far more urgent cases.

How far you’ve fallen indeed, pet.

Hey everyone! Since it’s been a while since I was actively and regularly posting here and I see some faces I don’t recognize I thought I’d post an updated little roundup of ALL TEN (yes… ten…) of my rooks!!

Aria Laidir/Hawthorne

Lords of Fortune • 29, She/Her, Saboteur Rogue, City Elf

Former Nevarran street rat, full time menace, lord of fortune rogue Aria Laidir is all chaos and no subtlety. She loves experimental alchemy, climbing on literally every surface she can find, and the freedom that comes with the ocean. In her canon she romances Neve Gallus and the nickname “trouble” really does suit her quite well. Disaster lesbian, explosion enthusiast and swashbuckler style fighter, Aria is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Jordan Pavus

Shadow Dragons • 27, They/Them, Evoker Mage, Human

Famously a “mean lesbian”, ice mage Jordan Pavus is the former child of magister Aurum Prycis. At 17 they disrupted their corrupt father’s plans and fled home, later being taken in by Dorian Pavus and changing their name. They specialize in undercover work and interrogation for the Shadow Dragons as well as wards and security. They may be a little prickly on the outside but they write cheesy romance serials under a pseudonym in their free time and love cats a normal amount. Their type may or may not be short redheads (it may) and let’s just say that baby they’re a giver!!

Caspian Aldwir

Veil Jumpers • 8271, He/They, Veil Ranger Rogue, Ancient Elf

An ancient elf with the face of a much younger man, Caspian is the brother of Felassan and a former scout under the Dreadwolf’s Rebellion. Now at odds with the god of lies, Caspian is a bit strange but wise and compassionate. He works with the Veil Jumpers, having found a new home in Clan Aldwir and specializes in enchantment and ancient elven artifacts. A spirit medium, he doesn’t use his magic in combat, opting instead for enchanted arrows and artifacts. His companion, Falon, is a red fox that shares its consciousness with Empathy, a spirit who remains intentionally undetected.

Alec de Riva (Calleary)

Antivan Crows • 26, He/Him, Spellblade Mage, Human

Half brother to Viago “on the bastard side,” Alec is also known amongst house de Riva as “the optimist crow.” Trans, gay, a little bit of a whore, Alec is charming and kind and always finding a way to look out for his fellow crows. He loves to cook, paint and play piano and specializes in illusion magic. His calling card is an illusory purple butterfly that announces his presence before he arrives. He utilizes mirror illusions in combat to confuse and disorient his opponents as well as a combination of illusion and the reflective underside of his cloak to obscure himself from view.

Quinn Amell

Grey Wardens • 20, She/They, Healer Mage, Human

Daughter of Warden Commander Leo Amell and either Morrigan or half-elf Maia May (depending upon the story) Quinn is also known by their peers as “Baby Warden.” A shapeshifter, Quinn favours the forms of a calico cat and a blue jay, occasionally utilizing squirrel and bunny forms as well. She’s a healer who focuses primarily on support when she’s not hurling walls of fire at darkspawn. ADHD personified, Quinn is bold, brave, and just a tad bit reckless.

Achilles Ingellvar/Wolfe

Mourn Watch • 33, He/Him, Reaper Warrior, Qunari

Otherwise known as a gentle giant, Achilles is tall, built like a brick wall, and loves with all 6’8” of himself. He’s passionate about spirits and protecting them in his work in the mourn watch and does most of his work as a bodyguard for the uh… squishier members of his faction. In canon, a crypt baby, in AU’s a tal-vashoth who grew up in Cumberland. Achilles can be found binding leather journals or glassblowing delicate goblets in his free time and has a special interest in ships, sharks and bioluminescence.

Senior Warden Nova Alina

Grey Wardens • 41, She/Her, Champion Warrior, Qunari

Soft hearted and a strong warrior, Nova fled the Antaam at age 19 when, as a part of Sten’s expedition, she managed to slip away into the woods during the skirmish that left the rest of their squad dead. Travelling on her own for a long time, Nova struggled finding who she was. Eventually, accidentally blighted after an encounter in Orlais, Nova joined the wardens. She enjoys sewing plush griffons for the kids in towns she visits and is Shy with a capital s. Despite her social anxieties, she will always choose kindness and is a good leader once her confidence kicks in.

Via Tethras-Tilani

Shadow Dragons • 23, She/Her, Duelist Rogue, Dwarf

Cousin of Varric, Adopted by Maevaris and Thorold after her parents were murdered by Venatori, Via is all bravado and no self esteem. A specialist in stealth and infiltration, Via doesn’t let the struggles of being soporati in Tevinter stop her. What she lacks in magic she makes up for in bold audacity. An expert at sleight of hand and a polyamorous sweetheart, Via will have an entire house cased and looted before you can say hello, ready to return to her partners.

Warden Commander Leo Amell

Grey Wardens • 45, He/Him, Knight Enchanter Mage, Human

Former Kirkwall nobility, survivor of The Gallows and Kinloch Hold and a few years overdue for The Calling that keeps teasing his nightmares, Leo Amell is a flaming bisexual and a pretty boy at his core. A specialist in fire magic and the techniques of The Knight Enchanter, Leo has a storied past full of heroics, love and sex. At the end of the day he’s a lover boy with a soft spot for his faction and found family and he will protect the well being of his loved ones above his own Every. Single. Time. He plays the lute and enjoys fine art and sweet coffee.

Naiad Mahina

Veil Jumpers • 42, She/Her, Slayer Warrior, Dalish Elf

All rage and chaos contained in a tiny little form, Naiad is a tired mom who is frankly Sick Of This Shit. An absolute menace on the battle field and a strong leader, Naiad is mostly concerned with keeping her 19 year old daughter out of trouble while she rapidly loses any semblance of control as a parent to the passage of time. Her best friend was kidnapped by Tevinter Slavers in their youth, leading her to have even stronger convictions and a (understandable) bias against humans. Ultimately, she simply longs for a kinder world and the assurance that her daughter is safe.

Body Language/Physicality

General Behaviour: hyperactive, stims constantly, in constant motion, hanging off furniture or people, whatever is closer, little happy dances when she eats good food or gets good news, talks wildly with her hands, terrible at eye contact, looks like her brain is moving a million miles a minute

Flirting: tucking her hair behind her ear, soft and shy hand touches, blushing sooooo bright red, stumbling over herself to help them, gets really still when they walk by, manages to maintain eye contact, blinking a lot

With Established Romantic Partner: constant physical affection, holding hands, kissing cheeks, wants them to carry her around in her anima forms, cuddles, cuddling, snuggles, snuggling, hugging while standing, hugging while sitting, hugging while laying down— you get the picture.

With Friends: hugs galore, teasing, playful shoves, messing with them in her animal forms, getting so hyperactive sometimes she accidentally wounds someone, I’m so sorry Zaedrin for how many times you’ve been accidentally wacked in the face

In combat: constantly in and out of animal forms, playing the battlefield, making herself hard to hit by changing forms, walls of fire and bolts of fire, otherwise very support based, barriers and healing on the field, very good strategist, but reckless when others are in danger, utilizes bird flight especially for strategy, very much using the land to her favour, speed over strength

Dialogue/Speaking

Voice: Jennifer English as Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3, soft and sweet, British accented (Fereldan), speaks very quickly

Humour: laughs at her own jokes, she really laughs at every joke even if it’s not funny, physical comedy with her animal forms, so many cat antics, and let’s not forget the shark

General: she speaks so goddamn fast, sometimes changes topic mid sentence or abandons her sentence part way through completely, tangents galore

With friends: playful banter, blunt teasing (especially about relationships), eg: “Zalan did you fuck my dad”, tries to be positive and optimistic and offer the bright side wherever possible, gives really good advice, sometimes accidentally bulldozes over people because she gets so excited to talk to them

Romance: softer spoken, words of affirmation, constant and I mean constant compliments, meaningful ones too, once the words ‘I love you’ leave her lips for the first time you can best believe they will be said soooooo frequently

Anger: gets quiet, it’s eerie how still she becomes, pinpoint heartbeat clarity and focus, loses all her lustre and hyperactivity, voice comes out lower and more monotone

Cursing: she doesn’t curse that much, but she’s not against it, she likes to save her cursing for moments where it really feels earned

Combat: mostly just calls out to ask if her healing or barriers are needed or to warn someone of an approaching enemy, not one to speak much during combat otherwise!

And if you do write Quinn into anything, I am Open to interpretations of her character! This is a guideline not a hard and fast rule set, I’ll be happy to see my little guy written in any way!

Body Language/Physicality

General Behaviour: constantly moving, bouncing, crooked smiles, loud unashamed laughter, constantly seconds away from blowing something up, soot in a little outline around where goggles once were, hanging upside down from banisters, feet never touching the floor, strong gargoyle energy, talks with her hands

Flirting: bold and blunt pick up lines, forward, physical touch, making out is a part of the flirting stage for her, grabbing the front of shirts, leaning in close, unashamed dirty jokes

With Established Romantic Partner: Softer, hanging on their arm, even dirtier jokes but she whispers them so only they can hear, loves to be carried, somehow even more excitable, ear twitches, puppy dog eyes

With Friends: openly affectionate, hugs and cheek kisses, also sometimes you need a platonic make out session just for fun, loves to poke and prod and bother, braiding or brushing hair, gives them little trinkets

In combat: Constantly in motion, very swashbuckler style of fighting with a rapier, flipping and jumping around, climbing enemies, is that an Antaam or a spring board?, only she can tell you, (it’s both), cocky and decisive

Humour: Very dirty jokes, innuendos, puns, hyperbole to the 10000th degree, outlandish stories that you can never quite tell if they’re real or not (somehow, they’re usually real)

General: Honest and bold, she doesn’t tend to mince her words, though she is kind with them, and tries never to comment on anything someone can’t change in 5 seconds (like something in their teeth), she’s very much a girls girl lesbian who is always there for her fellow girlies and anyone else feminine presenting, very encouraging, sarcastic and silly

With friends: she’s like a personal cheerleader for her friends, encouraging, kind, always the one trying to say the right thing, though she won’t hesitate call out her friends if they’re being self destructive

Romance: again the dirty jokes and raunchy humour, bold flirtation and direct action, she is not afraid to say what she wants and she won’t wait around for it to be given, the type of girl to get flustered worse the longer she’s in a relationship, scared of Love and has never had someone to say it too before

Anger: she’s an angry crier, she will cuss you out whilst in tears, will call names, knows swear words in every language despite only being fluent in trade

Cursing: see above, one might say she curses like a fucking sailor. Who knew?

Combat: spider-man like quips, laughing when she lands a good hit or an enemy misses her, her constant motion makes her voice almost bounce around the battle field

And if you do write Aria into anything, I am Open to interpretations of her character! This is a guideline not a hard and fast rule set, I’ll be happy to see my little guy written in any way!
