Leave something for God. But never leave God for something.
Customer Service? Right. Whatever.
I work part time as a hostess in a Local restaurant. It has it's pros and it's cons, but for the most part it's an enjoyable enough job. I like to think of myself as a people person, I try to be friendly, respectful and genuinely kind to anyone I meet. I do, however, have issues with people who put on airs, treat individuals like trash and have no respect for anyone but themselves. I am NOT a suck up. I am all about speaking my mind. I'm not afraid to tell people what's what. Well today, I just want to vent for half a second. This post probably won't even be read by anyone else, but I JUST WANT TO GET IT OFF MY CHEST. Two women came in to the restaurant today, I asked them if they had a preference as to where they sat, "Would you like a booth or a table?" I asked. "Whatever works." They replied easily. Taking the chance I went to sit a section that I had skipped the time before due to seating arrangements. (The resturant's servers don't split tips, so we try to seat them as evenly as possible to be fair and avoid drama from the waitresses.) I asked the two ladies to follow me, as I led them into the dining area I asked them how their day was going. They looked at me like it wasn't my business and didn't reply, so I left it there. I brought them to section 5, a table for 2 was there and set their menus down with a smile. I told them to enjoy and started to walk away. One of the women called out, "hey, um girl!" I turned to see what I might do to help them with. "We want to sit in a booth." She continued. The other woman mumbled under her breath, "my thoughts exactly.!" Now what you need to understand is, at the moment I asked them if they wanted a booth or a table there WEREN'T any booths available. (No big deal. I would have had them wait for a booth if that's what they'd asked for. BUT THEY DIDNT.) I scanned the dining room, looking for an open Booth... I asked the busser to immediately clean off one that had just been vacated. I walked back to the women, picked up their menus and said, "Of course. Right this way, please." I led them all the way back across the room to the available booth. The one woman looked at me angrily and demanded i give them a better seat. I explained that this was the only available booth and if they had a different one in mind they would need to wait for it to be open. Nothing seemed to please these two women. After they yelled at me and I apologized AGAIN they plopped themselves into the booth. Setting the menus down, masking my frustration with a smile, I told them to let me know of there was anything else I could do. Without looking at me, I walked away after they shooed me away with a flick of their wrists and started reading the menu. Thinking that was the end of it, I let it go. Except it wasnt. The waitresses both got mad at me about it. One angry that I moved them from her section and the other because I sat them in her booth. Okay whatever. Be upset. I don't care. I tried and that's all I can do. Only to find out later, I Was talked to by my manager because the women had complained about my attitude, claiming I had "rolled my eyes" and they were "very upset about it." First of all, I did NOT roll my eyes. Second, I was taught better than to roll my eyes in annoyance IN PUBLIC. what do you think I am? A child? Good grief. Problem is, the restaurant teaches their employees that "the customers are ALWAYS right." We all know that is tar and duck feathers. People will be people though. So there I am being corrected and warned by my manager about my attitude. Trying to explain myself was pointless. So I left at the end of my shift irritated. It's the first time a customer has ever complained about me in all the time I've worked there. So whatever. I should just let it go. And I will. As soon as I set the record straight. Because I don't appreciate being lied about. You think I'm rambling-- I know, but I'm not. My point is simply this, EVERYONE needs to work to make a living. They may not work the same job or hours but they still work. EVERYONE wants to be respected and understood. Respect should be earned though. Kindness can be delivered, but it's up to you to return it. Remember that you don't know how someone's day might be going so always try to send them a smile. And to treat others as you would like to be treated. Too many people forget this. I have a simple job, right? Wrong. It should be, but it's not. Because I am the one who has to deal with the customer's attitudes. I'm the one who get to deal with the servers drama when they think they aren't being treated fairly. I can deal with people changing their minds. But seriously? No need to get mad at me that you didn't know what you wanted from the start. Know your own mind and your life will be a much happier place. And last but not least, Learn to treat others with kindness. Show some respect and understand that they are just trying to do their job. This goes for anyone, anywhere doing anything. That is it. And I am finished. P.s. Having manners isn't being "square". It's being mature.
