Be Our Guest (Editor)

As you may know, S’lim is a visually driven zine that focuses on one place at a time, merging the urban, contemporary and historical experiences of visiting, living, staying and theorizing. The core idea is to utilize and publish mostly already existing imagery (social, archival, residual...) to re-frame and showcase potential alternate contemporaneities and observations through a momentary, curatorial lens.

We are now calling for guest curators / editors for an upcoming issue #6 on Helsinki.

Send us a small blurb (max 150 words) describing an editorial idea, highlighting a specific viewpoint on “Helsinki”. We are particularly interested in margins, side-eyes and off-conditions.

We will choose the most relevant proposal by mid-November and work together with the guest editor to produce the issue by early 2018, both digitally and in print. The chosen editor is tasked with seeking and selecting suitable contributions and providing a small editorial text for the issue (max 500 words). Past issues have held around 5-7 contributions each (you can view examples at www.selim.fi/slim). In exchange, we can offer a small honorarium.

“At the exhibition in HDA, we present around fifteen fictional or utopian objects. Together they form a kind of classical vitrine display, popularised by museums and natural history collections. Laid out on a neutral grey fabric with exhibition labels, each object is meant to read as evidence of speculative future scenarios. The items range from books and other printed objects to memorabilia and souvenirs of utopian futures. They are presented together, even though their storylines might be contradictory or improbable.”

Proxima Utopia. A world atlas of utopias – to be considered in the era of post-everything.

Perhaps following a cycle (and anticipation) of global crisis developing today, architecture finds itself again drawn to utopias. However, as today our understanding of modernities has become multi-centered and simultaneous, we are witnessing also several deviant ways in how future societies are being pursued. "Proxima Utopia" represents a project for an atlas that seeks to provide speculative cartography and imagery for these developments. It is not as such a "mappa mundi", consisting of what we currently know of the world, but more of a design-led inquiry into the "other" directions that global development might take – with or without the benevolent and harmonious past understandings of utopias. While not potentially desirable, the scenes discussed in the atlas seem yet plausible, deriving from current global politics, power relations, economy, surveillance, the post-internet and the looming ecological changes – the real contexts of future architecture.

Call for Contributions S'lim #3 - Ys

For the first time (like, ever) we are calling for contributions to our zine S'lim. The upcoming third issue will be called Ys. What does it all mean?

As you may know, S’lim is a zine edited and created by us, Selim, and the people and projects we encounter, focusing on a particular place at a time, merging the contemporary and the historical experiences of visiting, living, staying and theorizing. The past issues have looked into Venice and Berlin, but with the next episode, we'll move on to an unknown territory.

Ys, was in essence a mythical city located on the coast of Bretagne, the westernmost tip of France, that supposedly disappeared into the ocean. Nobody knows if Ys ever existed, but mixed with other mythologies and legends in European history, Ys was eventually adopted as one of the romantic "lost cities" in the 19th century literature and art.

Thus, we are looking for contributions of contemporaneities past and present, from places that somehow fit the descriptions of Ys - places that were lost, or that only ever existed in our stories.

You may send us short image series (with a title) by email to [email protected] by the 23rd of October, 2016. Following S'lim's underlying idea, you most likely already have the photos you are looking for.
