Knowing Your Time Periods and Other Shit Ashy Is Annoyed With

I can't believe I'm having to say this but here we go!

You cannot judge a character from a different time period by modern standards. That should be common knowledge, yet it doesn't seem to be. All these "woke" 12-year-olds calling Two-Bit, Dally or Steve shitty people would be correct if those characters existed in 2019. There's no question about that, their behavior absolutely wouldn't be tolerated or accepted.

But here's the thing, they don't exist in 2019. They existed in 1965 (and even before that, since they're teenagers and adults during the story), and there were different standards back then. Would Two-Bit get the shit slapped out of him if he pulled a girl's skirt up during a movie in 2019? Abso-fuckin-lutely. But in 1965? Nobody woulda given a damn, much less enough to intervene. He would've just been a teenage boy doing what teenage boys do. Is that shitty by today's standards? Of course! But again, in 1965, sexual harassment without repercussions was the norm. It sucks to say it, but nothing would've happened to Two-Bit, simply because sexual harassment wasn't such a hot button topic in 1965. Men raping their wives was barely becoming a topic of discussion, do you really expect a teenage boy to get the electric chair over pulling a girl's skirt up? Get real, folks, he got off scott-free.

On the topic of Dally, I don't get the lack of understanding of trauma this fandom has. Yes, I understand Ponyboy has a hard life, having to walk on egg shells around Darry and constantly worrying about being snatched out of his home by the state if one thing goes wrong, but please don't ignore the fact that Dally raised himself, alone, on the streets of New York with no one to watch out for him. Literally his quote "get tough like me and you don't get hurt" reflects his adopted view on life because of his childhood. He doesn't show emotion because to him, emotions make you weak and being weak gets you killed. His advice to Ponyboy before he dies is the idealogy he grew up with: caring about other people gets you hurt, so you should only care about yourself. Dally's story is horrifyingly tragic, but everyone just paints him as the jailbird, shitbag, emotionless asshole that he is at face value without even attempting to think how or why he ended up that way. I'm not saying to baby him the way the fandom babies Sodapop or Darry, but at least view him with more than a one-dimensional magnifying glass, please.

On to Steve. I'm not gonna lie, Steve isn't my favorite character simply because he's hardly involved in both the movie and the book, and while that blame lies solely with Hinton, it's disrespectful to his character (what little of it there is) to act as though he's the only asshole to ever exist in the world. Tell me, truly and completely honestly, that you wouldn't be annoyed if your friend's younger brother wanted to tag along everywhere. Y'all act as though Steve was beating the shit out of Ponyboy, when in reality it was probably shoulder punches and sarcastic banter. Ponyboy is 14. 14-year-olds are dramatic.

The characters aren't good people because they're not meant to be. Nobody in this story is a good person. They're criminals, straight up criminals who have stolen, beaten people up, disturbed the peace, and whatever other shenanigans they got up to. Are they murderers and rapists? No. Are they good people? Also no, but that doesn't make them unlikable. Flawed characters are not the devil incarnate, people! It makes them realistic, it makes them relatable! Characters don't have to be good people by society's standards to be likeable! These kids (yes even Darry) are already demonized enough in their own universe.

- Sodapop was never happy. he only acted like it only because he knew his family was already in deep enough shit and dealing with their own problems that he felt he had to set aside his own in order to be a crutch for his two brothers.

- At the same time, we see everything through Ponyboys perspective. there are even certain things about each gang member that ponyboy doesn't know. that's why we don't know much about Steve because Ponyboy wasn't close to Steve. Everything we know about steve is everything Ponyboy knows about him.
