I know I like to brag about my Kappa Delta sisters, but I cannot even express how proud I am of the lovely ladies of Alpha Phi. Despite the tragic loss of Sister Emily Hilliard, the chapter has still pressed forward with their lives with heavy hearts.
I love these women so much and I never thought I would have bonds like the ones I shared with my chapter after I graduated. But the incredible thing about being a sorority woman is that once you put on your letters and wear your pin you are a sorority woman for life. These girls remind me of why I chose KD and how I will be ever loyal to all that is honorable, beautiful, and highest.
When I heard about Emily I was so sad. I wanted to be there for the girls and help them through this difficult time. These women has opened their Kappa Delta circle to me without question and I felt so strongly the need to return that love. So I decided to do what I know how to do best in order to show my love and appreciation... I fundraised.
I started a campaign to honor Emily's memory and help make the chapter's Shamrock 5K Fun Run a huge success. I reached out to my sisters around the nation for love and support and they responded with a resounding "yes". Over the course of 2 weeks I received donations from around the country. Alumnae and sisters helped me to raise $630, which I presented to the chapter today.
Someone once said, "The invisible ties between sisters are the strongest bonds." And after the past few weeks I have no doubt that this is true. We may not be sisters by blood, but we are sisters by heart. And the love and support that I have witnessed from my sisters around the nation is the most incredible act I have ever seen. Our sisterly bond is not something you can see or hear or even taste, but you can certainly feel it every day. And I felt it reverberate through my soul with every note and gift I received.
I just want to say thank you, which is truly not enough. You all helped me to express to Alpha Phi what I could not in find in words. But you have also changed my world. I find a renewed sense of sisterhood that reaches much further than I ever realized. From the bottom of my heart thank you for your kindness and generosity.
Alpha Phi had an amazing event today and, thanks to all of you, they raised $2.8K for Prevent Child Abuse America and the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County. I am so lucky to call each an every single one of you a sister and I am so proud to wear our letters.
And to Emily- I hope we made you proud today. Thank you for watching over us and guiding us through this journey. We miss you and we were so glad to have you with us today in our hearts.
Ever Loyal in our KD & AOT,
Melissa
There are seniors in our community who are missing medical appointments, not buying sufficient food, or becoming socially isolated because of transportation problems. AgeWell Rides, a program of Jewish Family & Children's Service of Pittsburgh, seeks to alleviate that issue by matching volunteer drivers with seniors. You can make a difference in the life of a senior by becoming a volunteer! You can volunteer whenever it is convenient for you. Even as little as one hour every few months can make a big difference. For more information, click the link. You can also call AgeWell Pittsburgh at 412-422-0400 to speak with either Ellen Leger or Maxine Horn.
You can also message me for more details!
I am raising money to contribute to the Alpha Phi Chapter's Shamrock 5K on March 30th in honor of sister Emily Hilliard.
Hello Everyone!
I am a Chapter Advisor for the Westminster College chapter of Kappa Delta. I wanted to do something really special for the Chapter to honor Emily Hilliard, a sister we lost on March 7th in a tragic car accident.
Their big philanthropy event, Shamrock, is in 2 weeks so I am trying to surprise them with a gift in honor of Emily. I am going to be working overtime to raise money to give to them on March 30th. I know it would really help lift their spirits to have a successful Shamrock.
Thanks to the generosity of my KD sisters we have already raised $140! If you are able, I would love any support that you can give.
Love in AOT, Melissa

UC Berkeley Sororities Celebrating GivingTuesday
Just in time for GivingTuesday, the UC Berkeley Panhellenic organization connecting campus sororities has partnered up with the UC Berkeley chapter of the non-profit buildOn to host a Panhellenic-wide fall philanthropy event: a VivaDressUp Dress Drive. Instead of requiring monetary donations, the dress drive is a way for college students on the UC Berkeley campus to give back just by cleaning out their closets. Members of the Panhellenic and the Berkeley buildOn chapter will collect the dress donations and send them to VivaDressUp, a philanthropic fashion company that works with charitable organizations by collecting dresses and selling them at a reduced price and donating the majority of the proceeds to charity. On This Blessed Day: An Ordinary Man's Thoughts
After a morning of reflection and admittedly worried about some of my personal challenges, I was back at it. As I was driving back to my Virtual Office, I saw a man with a sign. I stopped by to chat with him. I gave him one of the ready meals I have in the back of my car whenever I see such folks to try and cheer them up somehow. It turned out he was a Marine and was just looking for work and a bit of help. Emerson reminded us that if we bring a smile to even one person, we've succeeded. As I saw all these great organizations here that committed to give, all of us in our way can and should work to do what we can and remember those less fortunate than us. I pray that my small gesture to honor #GivingTuesday was in this spirit. May the...Read More

Of the many NHL records Wayne Gretzky owns, this may be his most impressive. The "Great One" recorded 1,963 career assists, which is more than any player has points. Even if Gretzky never scored a goal in his career – and he scored 894 of them, also a record - he would still be the NHL’s all-time leader in points. #GivingTuesday Unselfie Explanation
On April 23rd I will be turning 25. That's a pretty big deal, a quarter of a century. So I wanted to plan the party of the century, but I started to realize how difficult it would be to gather all the people who are really important to me for a celebration. So instead of trying to plan a party, I decided I would do something fitting of my character that everyone I care about could get involved in.
Instead of gifts or an elaborate party I just want everyone I know (or don't know) to make a gift to their favorite charity. It can be in my honor, it can be in memory of a loved one, it can be just because. I just want to make all my friends across the country and around the world feel like they are celebrating my momentous occasion with me.
Everyone who knows me can attest to my good-willing nature and need to help everyone. I was very fortunate that Milton and Catherine Hershey came along and saved my family, so the least I can do is pay it forward. I have dedicated my life to helping others in the nonprofit sector by using my talents to better the organizations I work for. This just feels like the right thing for me to be doing to celebrate my special day.
Sure donating a few bucks to a charity doesn't seem like it would make a significant impact, but the more people who join in the greater the results. Just like #GivingTuesday or #PghGives, it's about people coming together as a collective. We can all work together to make change in this world.
I haven't completely worked out the logistics seeing as my birthday is still about 5 months away, but I am going to make a list of my favorite charities that I will be making gifts to as well. If people want to donate to those groups, great! If not, then that's great too. But I'll figure out the details in the next few months and keep everyone informed.
I hope I don't come off as pretentious or self-righteous. I just can't think of a better way to have all my friends celebrate with me.
You only turn 25 once!
