Traditional coaches being forced to confront the inevitability of change in the debate community like
getting your ballot back for the round you bombed which made you not get into finals
Ten forensics asks for 2015
1. List and explain your goals for the 2015 season.
my main goal is to break/board at every tournament I compete in. This year I’ll be competing in OO and Congress, so I have the opportunity to either break or board at every tournament. Also, it’d be cool to do both in a tournament. also, I’d love to do a partner event with my little sister
2. Name a song that you loved in 2014 but will never be able to listen to again
well there is no time that I listen to music during speech and debate except during tournaments when I’m trying to calm my nerves but I don’t listen to any specific songs, it’s more of a distraction
3. Describe your ‘type’ when it comes to debate crushes.
people that are for lgbt rights, people that talk about the horrors of capitalism, people that can move me with their pieces
4. Explain your performance in 2014 – what could you improve? What did you improve?
well my main letdown of this year was my 2nd tournament, the houses were collapsed so I was competing with senior level people and my parlay “gave me tips” but he basically shat all over my speeches so I let it get to me. I could’ve made senior level by my second tournament, and nat qualified my first year, but that one tournament screwed up everything. also, I wish my team helped me do more events - this year I competed in impromptu, poetry and prose interpretation, and congress. like, come on, your freshman year is about finding your event
5. Describe what you perceive to be your impact on the debate community.
I’m a giant freaking inspiration. First off with my hair, not only is it colored but it’s wild and my initial visual impact is huge. Also I scare the shit out of people. I speak loud and fast, I say what I want to say (ex: I gave a speech about how american soldiers are murderers) and I kick ass - I do better than a lot of 3rd years.
6. Compare the competitive challenges you’re facing in 2015 with those from 2014.
I won’t be a freshman, so I won’t have the whole “Oh I’m just a little freshman don’t mind me” vibe when walking into congress, also I now have titles under my belt so it won’t be as easy to fly in under the radar then kick ass. Also, I’m much more pressured now to competitively compete in speech events, and not a single A Panel event interests me so it’s going to be difficult to reach senior level. also, we only have like 6 returning members and our team is expected to double so I’m gonna have to watch out for novices and teach them the ways and mentor them
7. List the tournaments you’re most excited for in the coming year.
state. we didn’t go to state this year and I might not ever go to state again. also churchill, because it’s like an hour away so if we go we’ll have to carpool and that’ll be fun
8. Explain the most valuable piece of advice you’ve ever received.
as far as speech and debate goes, I’ve never really received any advice. my team didn’t care about me this year, at 2 tournaments I was the only one competing. I had to learn everything for myself, the hard way
9. Match each of the tournaments you competed in during 2014 with a song.
Douglas - Push by Matchbox 20. I felt like Nick was pushing me around the whole time, pushing me to compete, pushing me to work hard, pushing me to stay in it, pushing the limits
Reno - Meant To Live by Switchfoot. After Reno, I never wanted to compete again. not only congress but also impromptu and feeling so discluded from my team. I felt like Reno was gonna be it
Carson - The Anthem by Good Charlotte. I won 1st place. and not like other people did. I talked about sex education and gay rights and I bashed other bills for being so horribly written and poorly worded and I bashed my competitors and that’s not what congress is. the way to win congress is to make friends and write nice, long speeches. and I won anyway.
Spring Creek - Her Diamonds by Rob Thomas. Spring Creek exhausted me. My teammates exhausted me. I spent most of the time wanting to cry. I learned a lot, but if I learned anything from that tournament, it’s that debate is what you make it and next year I’m not letting my teammates turn my year to shit.
Districts - Call It Karma by Silverstein. I felt useless, I felt worthless, I felt unappreciated, I felt like I ended the year poorly. I wondered why I even competed. Then, after a few days, I realized that it’s just going to be another tournament under my belt.
10. Explain who you want to be within the forensics community.
I want to be the person who sweeps at every event, the person whose room you walk into and automatically know that you lost that round, the person that you can always ask for advil or a pen or a light for, the person that pushes the boundaries, the person with a thousand enemies and equally as many friends, I want to make first years shit their pants. I want to sexually confuse people. I want to be the girl obsessed with capitalism, hell bent on destroying the white males in my room. And most importantly, I want to be the girl that speaks loud and fast and makes you shit your pants.

“There isn’t sexism in Speech and Debate”
