After this image became so popular, the quote passed me by on an almost daily basis. Eventually, my brain settled on a bit more darkish interpretation of ‘the crows leading you home’.
Made for inktober initially, original drawing can be found here

"To say I'm sorry." His voice was quiet as stepped closer to the grieving woman, kneeling down so the moment between the pair of them was drawn in, shutting out the gruesome scene around them. She'd seen enough. Eric knew well about reliving something so desperately painful again and again, these were not the memories that she needed to hold onto.
He had done his best to bring an end to the reckless behavior of the men that had caused this tragic becoming. Having been brought back to keep something like this from happening again. To spare as many lives from the grips of those who otherwise couldn't be bothered to care. But this had been too much for him to stop before these two had been caught in the crossfire of it all. He had tried. God, he had. But he had failed, and now she would forever carry that weight with her. Eric wanted to tell her that the grief would settle, the heart would heal... but that was a lie, it'd been over a year since Shelly, and her death still tore at him, still left his heart bruised and driving him to feel anything more than that kind of pain.
“I’m sorry as hell for what happened to you and your girlfriend!”
- “Yeah!”
