genma has a lot of scarring on both of his hands, the results of a mission gone wrong and intense recovery afterwards.
he had been on a mission and ended up being captured, where upon he was tortured in order to obtain information about konohagakure and any bit of information he has on the hyuuga clan.
not going to go into graphic detail, but a lot of the torture was inflicted onto his hands. when he was eventually recovered, doctors were skeptical on him regaining the full capabilities of his hand.
he went through experimental procedures, including metal rods being inserted to strengthen the recovery of his bones, etc.
fortunately with his stubbornness, coupled with intense physiotherapy, genma was able to recover roughly about 98% use of his hands.
this is where a lot of the scarring comes from, not from the actual torture, but from the numerous surgeries he endured afterwards.
he doesn't really hide them, genma has a sense of pride of being able to recover from such career-ending injuries. however, he's still a bit sensitive when it comes to people touching his hands because he knows that they can feel the amount of scars he has. not to mention the torture has left him with some lingering side-effects.
the biggest one being that he deals with chronic pain in his hands, usually they're easily ignored except when the weather gets intense ( storms for example, he can tell when one is coming ) and the cold seasons make his bones ache more than usual. his hands also have a minute tremble but genma has some control over it and can cope with it for the most part.
actually, this is where he got his knitting & crocheting hobby. one of his physiotherapists recommended it to him and he's been doing it ever since.
