DART 491 // Assignment 03 

Plasphalt is an asphalt mixture that uses plastic as an aggregate instead of gravel. My original object was a plastic bag filled with ‘expired’ sesame seeds. Plasphalt can be made of plastics 1-7 without being sorted (they don’t say anything about being cleaned) so this bag could be sent to their facility to be transformed once the sesame seeds were removed. The plastic is ground up and mixed in specialised machinery to create a special wax that can be mixed into asphalt. It is lighter in weight than regular asphalt. Unfortunately, it costs approximately 10% more and the tests to prove their claims of higher resistance to wear have been inconclusive.

The Bloc’d Sofa is a modular seating solution, designed to fit and work well through the many stages and settings of life. It is simple and straightforward, and encourages interaction, which is key to longevity. The design is flexible and playful, intuitive and elegant. A really neat piece of problem solving design. The Emergency Architectural shelter by Pieter Stoutjesdijk is in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. These shelters can be assembled in 5 hours using a CNC milling machine laser cutter with fiber boards. Cleverly the pieces can be assembled without any additional materials as they interlock in strong joints.

The Kit Yamoyo is an incredible life-saving project that uses the empty space between Coca-Cola bottles in their shipper crates to deliver health supplements to developing countries.

You can buy a Coca-Cola is delivered to almost anywhere in the world, even in the most remote parts of developing countries. In some of these places 1 in 9 children die before their fifth birthday from preventable causes, including dehydration from diarrhea. The Kit Yamoyo utilises Coca-Cola’s distribution channels to supply  oral rehydration salts and zinc supplements to remote places in need – to save children’s lives.
