Up until the 20th century, about 19 dialects of Ainu languages were spoken throughout southern Sakhalin island and Kuril islands. Today, the northern Hokkaido dialect is the sole survivor with only about 10 truly fluent speakers. The lack of interest and commitment among not only young Japanese but also ethnic Ainu is endangering this language…gravely.

For any who do not yet know about it, Jisho is a great online dictionary! It can translate from Japanese to English, English to Japanese, using romaji, kanji, hiragana/katakana. Very useful ^_^

Vocab Quiz

お久しぶりですよね！

Some quick vocab exercises for you to have a go at! These are common words that are used often ^_^  

やい  　早い           early/ fast 強い  　つよい        strong; powerful 薄い  　うすい         thin; weak 若い　  わかい        young 便利な  べんりな     convenient

忙しい   いそがしい  busy

 Try using them in sentences as often as possible. For example, if it’s particularly windy one day, you can say:  “風が強いですよね！”(kaze ga tsuyoi desu yo ne) - “The wind is strong, isn’t it!”/ “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh it’s windy” :P 

Your best bet in learning another language is to apply it to everyday things, and everyday thoughts. So instead of saying something in English (or whatever your first language may be), be it out loud or in your head, try saying it in Japanese. If you find you don’t know how to say it, look it up in a dictionary and then keep practicing it!

Kanji (Book) Test 3 - Answers

Howdy, all! 

Here are the answers to the third kanji test. Hope you all had a crack at them. These kanji are very basic, and very commonly used, so they’re very handy to learn! 

Just to clarify, in case anyone is confused: 

言う　and　話す　differ in the following ways: 

犬が好きと言ったね？(inu ga suki to itta ne?)　－ You said you like dogs, didn’t you?

ユキさんと話しました。(yuki san to hanashimashita)ー　I had a conversation with Yuki / I spoke with Yuki.

I’ve had people ask me if they were interchangeable in speech and writing, so I just wanted to clear that up! Very different meanings ^_^ Stay tuned for more quizzed coming up soon!
