things i wanna ask 5sos if i ever make it in music/entertainment journalism
i’m a journalism student hoping to go into the entertainment journalism industry after graduation but my fav band (obviously look at my tumblr acc) is 5sos and these are questions i’m so desperate to learn about them and their music:
(i think i accomplished the “keep reading” thing if not im sorry for the length)
-how are y’all? how’s the day going? genuinely just would like to know on any given day
-(as per the law-) is it alright if i record this? (also after answer: if i pause between questions just know i’m taking notes and writing things down so, sorry in advance) *note to journalists and just like anyone ever asking ppl questions: welcome the silence. it makes people uncomfy and more likely to keep talking especially in interview settings*
- you guys have mentioned in other interviews having to learn how to play certain songs to play for live shows, what is the process for you (individually or as a band) to learn some of those?
--> follow up: does it get frustrating? how do you relieve that frustration?
- when does the conversation about “how will this sound live” enter the studio? does it come before or after recording? during maybe?
- what’s been your favorite studio to record in? why?
- i’ve seen previously you guys are big collaborators in your own music but you’re also 4 individuals. are there ever things you’re nervous about bringing into the studio to share w your band mates?
- how do you, as a band, moderate time together and time apart?
- calum, my guy, how do you play bass and sing at the same time? pls i’m being serious that’s so freaking cool?? and now we add keys?? iconic behavior
- i know red desert took some inspiration from your recording of killer queen. what are some other songs/covers/moments you’ve had where you’ve thought “let’s try this again?” (did this make sense?? like?? idk??)
- after years of growth as artists, what are some things that have changed structurally as musicians/song writers/band members/literally just everything you guys are
—>follow up: anything that you are sure has stayed the same or at least been established as a necessity for you guys to create?
- as a fan, I think what i’ve been able to interpret is that a lot of your guys’ music videos carry heavy connection to the “era” of music you’re in. I know you’ve said in the past that sounds in “talk fast” have helped provide colors and themes for the album “youngblood”, how do the conversations of the “looks” of your music take place? when do those convos come in?
- your music videos are insane. literally the best music videos i’ve watched (that might be the stan coming out) but what does it look like to walk onto set for a mv? what’s the prep behind it? how do you choose which songs will have music videos? are they always singles (i can’t think of any rn that aren’t except maybe live ones)
--> follow up/clarifying?: i ask because for youngblood (although the lyric videos were a thing) like i mentioned earlier, talk fast set color themes for the album but we didn’t necessarily get a music video for it
-another one about music videos: some of them are sooo different in theme. old me vs lie to me, one very nostalgic and one very sad. how does that affect what’s happening behind the cameras? does set feel different with those heavier/darker vids? (another example would be jbh i think)
- there’s been a few times where you guys have mentioned this with different songs, but when have you heard something for the first time in the studio and think that! that’s the one?
- i saw the live where ashton explained some of the musical stuff behind calm (admittedly i didn’t understand everything) but it seems like you’ve introduced keys more in writing. how did that come out?
-->(side note: i love that they can play so many instruments! and that they can fill their music up more with different tones in their vocal instruments!! with, not 1, or 2, or 3, but 4 different voices wow they’re so great and sound so good together (i.e. see “red desert”))
- i also saw bass forward music was what you were trying to push some in calm, what do (did?) you hope to get out of that? can we expect that in future music (this is 2021? so we’ll see in the future ig)
- i know you’ve gotten into the world of writing songs with/for other artists, how does that influence 5sos?
- what kind of promo do you guys enjoy the most? is there anything that you’ve done recently that has stood out to you?
--> (i would ask about least favorite but i think we all know that one)
- a bit of a fun, lighter one. i’m a big coffee person and love my moka pot (it’s italian) how do you guys take your coffee? do any of you prefer tea? do you have your favorite flavor/brand of coffee beans?
-->where should i get coffee when i’m in LA? what about australia? i wanna visit lol it’s on the bucketlist
- ok second to last one and you’ve answered this before but i’m curious, what do you guys hate getting asked in interviews? how do you avoid the answers to those questions? lol
-and last one as per how i’ve been taught: is there anything else you’d like to add? about music, sounds, future music, side projects, literally anything??
it’s early 2021 and i would love to listen to 5sos5 sometime this year, but i also know i’d wait 35498720 more years to listen to another album. hopefully i can ask them these things one day. it’s been in my drafts a while i just kept adding to it but it seems like the right time to post now.
hello i am back from the dead to say my friend recently moved to LA and she works with someone who used to work at the recording studio in bel air that 5sos recorded at and she said they were "lovely lovely boys." then my friend said i was a big fan and she was like oh let me give you this cd! and it's signed by all of them🧍 i also don't have sgfg on cd but i do have all the other ones so this is a nice add into the collection (bonus michael version)
