I really love how successful Tenna's acting/playing a facade is. Despite being under so much duress and being forced to think fast on his feet to keep stalling for time, Tenna keeps Susie, Ralsei, and even the player oblivious to what exactly he's doing, even when he’s actively breaking down like in Doom Board. As a bonus, Susie and Ralsei forget about their worries in the beginning too (and in my case, completely forget that Toriel would also be in the dark world somewhere.) Plus, I personally find it compelling about how dramatic and emotional Tenna can be, but, in the end, those are the very traits he utilizes to make his persona convincing, even if it costs his exaggerations to be mistaken as his true self.

I just think that Tenna’s a lot more clever than some people give him credit for, and I just love TV(x1000).

NO YEAH IT'S IMPRESSIVE TO ME. it's both hatery and not but i joke a lot that tenna is so good at acting that he even tricks the player audience into thinking he's doing fine. like he's genuinely good at it!! it took me multiple replays to realize the 2nd board wasn't planned just because he rolled with it so well that i assumed it was part of the plan from the beginning . he's genuinely a really good actor

even during his world-ending breakdown it takes until you finally beat him in his boss fight before he finally gives up pretending it's fine. or that he's doing good. or that he deserves to be kept around for his purpose. it makes me (thumbs up with blood gushing out of my mouth) nooormal mode

DUDE. the fact he got fucking Ralsei of all people to forget about his problems for a little while deserves a fucking commendation. like that's genuinely insane to me. the most heartbreaking thing about tenna to me is that he's genuinely really good at his job and loves making these kids smile and laugh, but the circumstances force him to keep extending it over and over until he's watching them get bored of it in real time. he finally made someone smile for the first time in years and now it's all falling apart and he doesn't know what to do to fix it

ohhhh tenna my tenna my shweetiepie. genuinely i think ppl dont give him enough credit not only for how long he keeps himself together given his circumstances but also how genuinely Good he is at what he does. he's good at this!! and it's not enough

It's been just over a year since Deltarune chapters 3 & 4 released! I did the 3D work, which mostly means Tenna 📺 I figured it's been long enough to share some "behind the scenes" stuff, starting with a look at the Maya file for his static poses...

I'd individually render the poses to get that early 3D shine ✨ Here's some of them at their original resolutions! I would work from text descriptions from Toby, and sometimes there'd be a Paint sketch to help out. Gigi drew the concept that I modeled from and some poses too!

I had a lot of fun pushing myself to match the dynamic poses Toby had in mind for Tenna - making him so crazy and expressive was something I couldn't have done without his prompts. He'd draw the faces on afterward too, which really brought Tenna to life!

Here are some of the Paint sketches Toby drew to help me with specific Tenna poses! I love seeing his drawings LOL, genuinely really good and evocative 👍

There was a time when I was struggling to capture what he wanted for these specific Tenna poses… Until Toby acted them out himself, and I thought, "Ah, it's like that. I understand." and then I was able to make them just how he pictured them.

When looking through the renders and choosing what to share, I laughed at these two… Remember when Tenna had a gun? Remember when he bent over in a very specific way that might remind you of another, different image? No? Maybe you don't…? Well. Don't worry about it.

These ones are cute… Tenna is pretty cute sometimes! Has anyone ever thought this? Actually, before people knew he was going to be a strange 3D sprite the Whole Time, I was worried people wouldn't like the style and it'd sour people's views on him. I'm glad that didn't happen.

Toby thought it would be funny to have Tenna do some really smooth, mocapped animations sometimes - specifically free to use ones that often pop up in other things. An extra funny part to me is how many frames these take up in the game, and how his tails are stuck to his legs…

Speaking of mocap, Toby wanted Tenna to use custom mocap animations as far back as 2016 - Ten(na) years ago! I got an Xbox Kinect at the time and learnt how to set this up, but then never used it. Here's a look at messing with mocaped stuff again in 2022. So Normal.

Don't bother trying to help him here, he's just being dramatic 🙄

I particularly like these poses - I think I improvised most of these just based off the context they get used in… I always liked posing his tie and coat tails as if they were also parts of his body he could move. Which I guess they are?

After I rendered out the individual poses in high quality, I'd force the color palette to be limited to just a few shades and then I'd shrink the result down to pixel sized sprites. Like these! I'd tidy them up a little, but they'd really get improved on at the pixel scale by Clairvoire.

As well as Tenna's sprites, I also worked on his intro "movie"…! Seeing people be completely overloaded by this on first playthroughs would always make me laugh. In game, there's a ton of extra editing done by Everdraed, but my unedited cut looks like this ⬇️

This was the entire storyboard I had to work from, and I'm realizing now that there's the note "put him in car etc" that I never did and actually don't know what it would mean exactly. Working on this had me listen to the accompanying audio many times, but it's good so it's okay.

For the 3D Ralsei clip from the intro, Toby really wanted it to look a certain way, and drew more sketches for guiding me with this part than any other. They genuinely helped.

Remember how Toby's original storyboard has the note "covered in slime and shrinks"? That meant I had to learn how to make 3D slime. You can see my tech advancing here.

I'm really happy with how the final Tenna animation at the end of the intro movie turned out! It wouldn't look as good if it wasn't for some 2D animation to reference from SmallBuStudio, so thank you to them for the help! Tenna is cute… Huh, I already said that…?

Phew!! That's a lot of Tenna. I hope it was fun to look through my posts! Oh, one more thing - the Fangamer Mr. Tenna Figurine just straight up uses the 3D model I made, which I think is really funny and cool and nice. Check it out if you want! Thanks for reading!

Sometimes I think about how, from Tenna's flashback in Chapter 3, we can see Dess, Carol, and Asgore disappear before Noelle.

If we were to assume that Noelle bringing the laptop over to Kris's house is how Spamton can be present in TV World, then, while Spamton may be at the height of his success, Tenna has already lost three people he cared for, which may be why he gave into desperation to push the contract with Spamton. Because if Tenna didn't at least try something, he'd lose the rest of the Lightners anyway, and because the contract failed, his situation fell into the exact scenario he dreaded and tried to avoid.

honestly i think i always assumed in my head the divorce happened After spamton disappeared, but the idea it happened Beforehand instead is making me sick. i personally imagine the talks of that sort of thing didnt happen in the living room, and tenna was already being heavily disused by then, so it took him a while to even notice asgore wasn't even in the house anymore, let alone that the parents split up

even still, it's just one more disappearance, just like dess and just like carol. everyone slipping through his fingers, his future getting grimmer and grimmer - and god yeah all at the height of spamton's own success

i honestly feel like ppl don't explore enough that spamton Really didn't need tenna the same way tenna needed him for the show, and. would i be killed if i said there's an interesting power dynamic there where despite tenna being the Big Boss Ruler, he's still so dependent on this knowledge and technology that spamton is implied to be kind of stringing him along with (at least at first). it puts the contract thing in a different light because spamton really had no reason to sign it unless he genuinely Wanted to, and for tenna it truly was a matter of life and death because we See his worst fears play out in front of our eyes by the time of ch 3. he gets used up, thrown out, abandoned, taken away to the dump if you dont find him a home fast enough.

Sorry for showing up lately; I've just been interested in Tenna's connections to Weird Route for a while and want to see people talk about it.

If you have any, do you have any thoughts about how the first time we hear about Tenna's version of his contract with Spamton, it's through the Mantle game he seems so weird about?

and hm now that you mention it Is very like. very very interesting (<- gaster voice). tenna's "relationship" with the mantle game is neat to me because despite how much he seems to dislike it, tries to hide it away from everybody and gets stressed & frustrated when it comes up somehow, he also like. more than once uses it as a sort of getaway; somewhere he can take a breath and be well and truly alone

it comes across almost less like he just point-blank dislikes it and more that there's a weird like. shameful reprieve or familiarity he has with it. like i dont really think he Likes it, he gets very very uncomfortable and Weird about it whenever it pops up in a way he's not expecting (e.g. the manhole dialogue in board 3), but it feels more like he's...almost repressing it in a way. which fascinates me

i think there's interesting things to connect with how heavily spamton features in the mantle game in particular: my favorite is the fact that, just like spamton in the weird route enables you by selling you a dangerous weapon (the thorn ring), you first find the mantle game's sword in the secret mail room.

that plus the tropic of love still being there in the mantle game - interestingly enough, making it the One leftover from that game that tenna doesn't immediately try to hide or steer you away from, instead asking for approval on it. like whatever it may have been birthed from Was something genuine, while the other straggles make him uncomfortable and ashamed

actually i think i have my big point now: a Lot of the mantle game and tenna's reactions to it reads as shameful and repressed - something tenna wants to hide, and when he cant, brushes it off or pretends it isn't there... much like how he normally deals with things that upset him greatly. things like a contract he shouldve known better than to push, that led to his partner disappearing completely.

so the fact that it so heavily features weird route stuff as well, including a literal step-by-step tutorial and the room supposedly having belonged to spamton being the one where you get the weapon to further it, is. concerning!
