I'm begging people to not be afraid of OTC pain meds.

OTC pain meds are not a devil’s bargain or a moral failing. They are a tool to reduce unneeded suffering. They do not destroy your organs if taken correctly, and there is no reward for the people who take the fewest pills in life.

Take what helps, and take it safely! If you have prescription meds or other health issues, always check for possible interactions/adverse effects.

So, acetaminophen/ paracetamol/ Tylenol is kinda garbage on its own because it doesn't work directly on the site of pain. Instead, it affects the BRAIN- it temporarily dials down your brains pain receptors. (Your body can heal itself better when it isn't in pain.) (Weirdly, this also means it can cause a temporary drop in feelings of empathy and existential dread, because your brain doesn't really distinguish physical and emotional pain) Because of this, it has fewer side effects than NSAIDs, but is less powerful.

However, it's an amazing buff FOR NSAIDS (and opiods. It gets mixed with a lot of opiods too.) Because it makes your brain chill out, the other meds can work more effectively at a lower dose, which means fewer side effects and lower chance of overdose. (So taking 200mg of Tylenol WITH 200 MG of ibuprofen is safer and more effective than taking 400 of either of them alone.)

That's why Tylenol gets mixed into *everything* (and that's why people need to check med labels, because it's easy to take multiple combo meds with Tylenol at once without realizing what you're doing.)

So, I tend to avoid taking pain meds, not because I think it's a moral failing or that it's dangerous or whatever, but moreso because as a kid I was taught that when you take the same medicine a lot, it becomes less effective. As in, your body gains a certain resistance to the substance and you'll need more of it for it to work. So, if I have a headache, or am in pain generally, I'll only take something for it if it's really bad, otherwise if I take meds for milder or average pain, it won't be as effective when I have a splitting headache ori get injured or something that is very painful.

Thing is, I just realized I don't know if this is actually true, it's just one of those things people in my family told me growing up but I've never seen any sources for it. Does someone know if this i even factual in the slightlest?

My understanding is that Acetaminophen doesnt really create a tolerance. The risk of building up a tolerance to the NSAIDS is also pretty low (the papers Ive seen on it mention like...chronic use over 6+ months can lead to some tolerance?), however there is a risk of not being able to take them at all anymore if you have damaged your kidneys with prolonged *overuse.*

The bigger risk honestly seems to be that *opiods* can create a tolerance very easily, so people will start taking larger and larger doses. But if that opioid has been mixed with acetaminophen (as many are), upping the dosage over and over to deal with the opiod tolerance can risk dangerous levels of acetaminophen.

I literally learned stuff from osha-official that I proceeded to use IN A VERY REAL OSHA COMPLAINT that resulted in my (now-former) job facing some very serious consequences (as in “you have 48 hours to present a plan and timeline to fix this or we’re shutting you down” consequences). The OSHA employee who handled my complaint said it was one of the best-written and most comprehensive he’d seen in the 20 years he’d been doing the job. The bullet-pointing and management jargon I learned elsewhere, but the forklift certification issues and the lack of adequate safety exits? That was YOU.

It’s not a joke that your blog may have saved lives at my job, because out of eleven infractions I turned in, five were deemed to be “an immediate threat to life and safety.” The government should have offered you a paycheck to keep going as an actual OSHA employee, because you were absolutely teaching us stuff that makes our jobs safer and told us what resources to use if we needed to swing the OSHA club at our bosses and you were doing it in a format that was accessible and popular with your audience. That should be any organization’s absolute DREAM.

So if they won’t thank you, I will: on behalf of about 100 employees who are no longer working in a building full of flammables with no fire extinguishers and no exits from the entire back half of the building, a building where uncertified forklift drivers rammed into support columns and made the walls shake, a building where the HVAC system was full of black mold, thank you, for giving me the tools and courage to pick up the phone and fix the problem.

Okay no but like, I am still SO ENAMORED by this transition y’all, ‘cause when Dorothy opens the door of the house onto the colors of Oz, the inside of the house is still sepia toned. And they did that by literally making the interior and the costume and everything SEPIA TONED. You had a double for Judy Garland in a specifically-created sepia-toned dress, in a sepia-toned set, opening the door, backing out of frame, and then the Dorothy that steps back into frame is Judy Garland in her full color costume and makeup, stepping out into the color set.

Y’all it’s such a GREAT EFFECT, and this was before computer effects and green screen, it was all practical and yeah it feels like nothing now, but at the time, man, not only was technicolor new, but I’m pretty sure no other movie had done a transition out of b/w or sepia into color, and even knowing it was a technicolor film, that must have just been fucking wild to see! It still is wild to see!! It’s so good.

The technique of switching between double and main actor without an edit is called a Texas Switch and it's still used today, it's very neat to have something so simple yet tricky persist pretty much just because it genuinely looks better to do it with timing than with editing.
