i was talking about this to a friend but i do want to say it here: white people will too often recuperate art about black trauma by memeing it to death. this happened to chocolate rain. this happened to cellophane by fka twigs (now known as the silly borzoi song ig). it is happening to united in grief by kendrick lamar. cellophane and united are, to me, the most egregious examples of this because they are incredibly well-made and deeply personal works about the creator's subjective experience with systemic racism. cellophane is about twigs metabolising her heavily publicised relationship with robert pattinson and the racist attacks she endured (while dealing with chronic illness) for having the audacity to date a successful white man. united in grief is a discussion of how black people learn to live in a constant state of mourning for their friends, family and people they don't even know due to the violence they endure. and white people took them to make silly little videos and memes, overriding those discussions with their own superfluous, unserious additions and forever associating those songs with stupid trends. i hate it.
